Invert Mouse
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Invert Mouse
I am interested to know how many people prefer inverting the mouse Y axis.
For me, moving the mouse down and making the camera look up feels very natural, but to others this causes feelings of disorientation.
I am guessing that people who grew up playing PC games with the mouse prefer inverted Y axis and those that did not prefer non inverted.
What are your views?
For mouse control in FPS games I prefer "Mouse Down = Look down"
I used to like the control inverted back in Quake 2 days but I really struggle with "Mouse Down = Look up" now
Using a Joystick in a flight sim however, I find the only control method I find natural is pulling back (down) means pitching "up"
Come to think of it, do games use a universal meaning when they have the "Invert Mouse Y" option?
In other words, are FPS games by default "Mouse Down = Look Down" and 'Invert Mouse Y [YES]' toggles this default action?
I like it like a hand on top of a head, or a plane ie, back = up fore =down.
Same as Jim for me.
for a fps down=down
try using windows or any other mouse driven os with down=up
with thumbsticks on the xbox its the same
for a flight simulator id go the other way as yokes stick forwards=down, but then again i might not be using a mouse for one of those, if i was into flight sims i might invest in a 'propper' stick, which when i played on my brothers kinda sucked for nigh on every other game mechanic* ;)
*it should in theory work well as a wsad replacement (his had a hat for the thumb ... yes free finger puppet headgear) but that well might 'well' be dry :p
I always invert mouse Y axis for FPS games.
I've had one third person game where I had to play with non-inverted mouse and I had a lot of problems learning it. After beating the game enough I had a short period of confusion with inverted Y axis, but now I can switch my brain between these gears with no problems.
I don't like inverting the mouse for games (not that I play many) - prefer point and click with FPS same as for regular GUI Apps.
However - on consoles I can't play FPS without inverting the controller Y axis, too used to flight sim games as a kid on the PC many years ago. Can be annoying for everyone else though when playing on a split screen game and we can't play on the same profile because some of us like the console controller inverted Y axis and some of us don't.
I wonder too if the preference is based on whether you played alot of flight sim games when younger.
yeah, i liked the sims too, i always feel like im flying or moving my own head with my hand, to do this, the only way to look up is to pull it back. Strangely enough, when using world editors its the other way round :/
Interesting how people have such a radically different feel for 'virtual-reality' controls.
I can adapt if i have to but i do go through a period of adjustment either way.
If you are asking for a game you are writing then give the choice.
Doubt it has anything to do with flight sims. I've played them for as long as I can remember. I also fly RC planes and helis, so I'm very used to pulling back to go up.
For games however, unless it's a flight sim, then down is down and up is up for me(No invert)
Used to play inverted, I switched after extensively playing Orbz which is up=up down=down type game. After that I couldn't go back.
like hand on the inside of the 'face' rather than on the 'head'...
interesting.
Flight sims caused me to go inverted. Then i got stuck playing some FPS where the controller controls couldn't be inverted, so i beared with it. Then i played Condemned and inverted the controls and couldn't play it like that! SO, i'm back to normal :o)
Mouse, I can't do inverted. With a controller like the 360, I need inverted.
