Diablo 3

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Diablo 3

Yup! http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/

Also D3 stuff on youtube.. go check!

The Screens look like WoW. I hope they don't screw this one.

This. Looks. Awesome.

I'm amazingly happy it's more Diablo, and not an mmo :D

Yay! I loved Diablo 2, I'm so happy the're coming out with a
third game in the series.
I just hope they don't make it too gross. That was something I liked
about Diablo 2. Even though it was rated M, it really wasn't that gross.
If they put too much gore in this one, it will make it quite unplayable.

BrunerDarkHeart(My Diablo 2 Battle Net Character)

I watched video of it. Looks pretty, but boring.

"Ooh, look, I'm hitting the ground with my fist over and over, easily slaughtering all the enemies around me!"

Same thought here, Shawn. Nobody on Slashdot believes me, though. That seems to be Blizzard's "magic formula"; create a mass of really boring enemies, then have music that is made by some woman wailing away for a few hours in a sound-proof room. Have LOTS of enemies so that people do not have time to complete absence of intrigue, then balance those hoards out with Massive Damage.
I find that a shame. The engine they have here looks really impressive, and as if it could handle some meticulously detailed and complex, maybe even effective, enemies. Instead, they are basically big Zergs from Hell. They each perform a single black and white operation then explode upon the slightest tap from the player's mouse cursor. They can do better than this!

I love the spot in the gameplay video where the lead designer says "...but have you ever seen a WALL OF ZOMBIES before?"
I immediately thought "Yes. That I have. Countless times. A few seconds ago in this video, even. So many times, in fact, that I would find that wall of bricks you propose far more interesting."

I believe you are jumping to conclusions.
The characters they play are obvious a higher level than lvl 1, they are probably fighting lower level creatures to demonstrate 'powerful'.
These games are all about 1 hero vs. masses of evil.

Take the plague/disease as an example. The spreading of the disease is most likely a talent point placed into a tree, where it determines how many times it can jump.

I laughed out loud when I heard the "WALL OF ZOMBIES" thing in the video, so obvious we have different views on this genre.

Long as they keep the co-op play fully intact as it was like in Diablo2 (perhaps with some enhancements), I'll be happy.

Site isn't loading at all for me, so I'm hopefully assuming this is just Diablo2 with better graphics and more mobs than you can shake a stick at?
(and hopefully less left-clicking)

I just want me a good online title we can both agree on that I can play with him online when I'm at college. On second thought, odds are this game will be out after I'm done with college given their nice two-year delay on Diablo2 back in the day.

yeah i agree with SSwift + Picklesworth

it seems 'boring but addictive' like diablo 1, the graphics dont look very impressive really

kinda like 'alien shooter' or 'zombie shooter'

Mr. Picklesworth, I just read your reply on slashdot.org aswell, and what Im left with is "this guy is complaining about a game he doesn't want to play because it's not more like the games he likes".

I find it interesting, and sometimes I have that same feeling myself when games with potential is announced.
Fallout 3 by Bethesda is probably not going to be the game I want it to be, but then again, Im not required to buy it.

I like slaughtering hordes of monsters. I also like deep RPGs. There's games for both sides out there ;)

Oh, and I love the graphics. Don't like the push for 'realistic' games, as it usually means photograph textures and no artistic direction.

I hope they don't screw this one.
They probably will.

I'm not a fan of Diablo. I think I played only to the Diablo1 demo many years ago.
But the video is great.
I like the graphics (it seems all 3d - no isometric like D1), the world is interactive (well - it seems, many objects can be destroyed) and many - many enemies.

Sincerely I remember that Diablo1 had the same 'game logic'...so why they should change a game?

I feel I should clarify a bit. I'm not complaining. I never complain; at least not as I understand complaining. I try not to force my opinion on people, but merely state what I think, even if it be that I think they should do something. If somebody feels an overwhelming urge after reading my garble that they must obey my every command, that's their problem, not mine.
I merely state my opinion, however negative that opinion may sound ;)

I really miswrote that post on Slashdot, too. Honest! Of course, since this opinion is going to be 99.5% based on the one video there, I mean more along the lines of "that video of the game is boring, giving me the idea that the game is boring", not just "that game is boring" (which is really impossible to tell). The reason I think it shouldn't be is because this is the game's first bit of publicity. I can understand level 1000 with weak enemies for a feature demo further down the line, but this is the video everyone is going to be staring at. Therefore, I for one assume that they intend this to capture the essence of their design.

Oh, yes, I felt that too when watching the video.. sometimes they even stopped up for 5-10 seconds with no action and I wondered if something went wrong with the video player ;)
It was too long to show off the little they had.

Im no Blizzard apologist, or fanboy though, I just wanted to defend the genre of 1 vs. horde hack&slash a bit ;)

Looks fabulous to me. Graphics were great. Yes, I noticed how the health sphere wasn't seeing a lot of action - but there's plenty of time for them to balance it up. So I'm very upbeat about it all.

But then, I definitely fall into the Diablo-groupie category and would have been happy to watch hours of video!

I think its the best game I've ever seen.

It's surprising most of the people here not worshiping Blizzard :) They have never made a non-hit game, did they?

I'm pretty sure that games like Justice League Task Force, The Death and Return of Superman and Radical Psycho Machine Racing weren't hit games :P

My life is over when this game is released. I must finish development of my game before this... oh....

The spell icons are directly ripped off from WoW and WC3 :)

It's surprising most of the people here not worshiping Blizzard :) They have never made a non-hit game, did they?

They've made several, but even so, if you're going to use sales figures as the sole criterion of quality, everyone should be worshipping at the altar of EA, or even more specifically, The Sims. Personally, I find sales figures and quality to rarely go together.

As long as its not p2p for battle.net I'll be getting it ;)

My life is over when this game is released. I must finish development of my game before this...

Me too! My first thought was, now I'm racing Blizzard. Lucky they are so slow to release.

Well, by saying "hit" I mean in the means of quality. I don't care how much they sell but I really love every single player game Blizzard made so far. From Blackthorne to Diablo 2. I played WoW and IMHO it sucks. Especially at quests. Again it's my opinion.

Well I found the first two limited in scope but actually very addictive, so will check this one out if there is a demo (or good reviews).

Sometimes simpler/limited isn't always worse. Overall I found Warcraft 2 more addictive than the -more vast- Warcraft 3..

Warcraft 2 is still the best Warcraft version for me.

I hope for the ones who love the previous 2 versions of Diablo, that they still like the gameplay of the new version.

I tried WoW with the few days trial version and the quest part was so boring and graphics weren't that good at all. I stopped playing the trial version after 1 day and decided it's not worth my money if I have to pay every month for that game.
The only thing that seems fun is when your lvl 70 and do raids...

The best MMORPG for me is still Rappelz, playing for a year now and still seeing new locations. It's free with option to buy extra's from a cash shop.
I like the upgrade options, pet training system and you can equip your character any weapon, even if it's not the best weapon for it... ( I just love to run arround sometimes with a big 2 handed Axe equiped on my Warlock :-) )

You should try Rohan: Blood Feud.

I'm really quite surprised with Blizzard, I expected them to screw up every game after WoW. Seems I am proven wrong :D

I think both starcraft II and diablo III look amazing. They are two of my favorite series and I think Blizzard has consistantly released really high quality games. I actually rebought Diablo II + Expansion to get ready :P!

friend says it looks a lot like wow, but im pretty excited about this one

Finally something that may be better than Darkstone :)

friend says it looks a lot like wow
Hardly.

diabloIII:

WoW:

nah!

I love the classic isometric (dungeon-y, dark) Diablo II look they kept, whilst going 3d.

You should try Rohan: Blood Feud.

I tried it when on the day Open Beta started, but I got bored with it very quickly. Takes too long to get a mount or pet, pet's look to childish compared to the rest. Each class can only use it's own weapons. Clothing is not so unique, everyone with the same class has the same outfit at start.

In Rappelz there is much more to do and you can become a very high level in the end. First youonly choose a race and from level 10 you choose if you want to be a mage, warrior or breeder as job with loads of skills, at level 20 you can wear and use rank 2 items in which you have a very big choice, Rank 3 starts at level 50 and there you can choose your second job to use even more skills, Rank 4 starts at level 80, Rank 5 at 100 and Rank 6 at 120.

Pet training system is very good as well, you can tame a pet and it levels when it fights alongside of you and they can have same ranks as you, they also have their own skills, they can evolve and so on. Just too much to explain. I play more then a year on server Tanda now and have 6 chars there.

Here are some old screenies that are too big to post from Rappelz :

Looks better then most MMORPG's, doesn't it? :-)

About Diablo3, looks like they still have the old gameplay, that is good :-)

Awesome! Been waiting on this one for years. Another reason to buy a new computer too!!!

General style of the characters are similar to WoW;

(I mean the bit cartoony style, texturing and general look)

Wha? You're reading way too much into the thing.

I didn't mean WoW orc and Diablo3 barbarian look like each other, I'm talking about the technical similarities.

Are you sure you know what you mean? You said the general look was like Wow's characters. Forgetting that though, you mean they both have polygons and a texture?

There is a wide variety of texturing styles Reactor. And those two models I posted are both hand drawn and I'm sure the same artists made those two.

Well, the Diablo characters are designed to be viewed from a far distance (I'm guessing most of the time), so the low-res (low detail) style is to be expected. The Wow characters on the other hand are designed to be viewed at a mid to close view range, so the low detail, painterly style has been used to create a more cartoony look.

Anyway, my point is- most non shader game models have a similar look to them these days, especially if they haven't being designed for close up viewing. That's what you get from low-res, low-poly models. Perhaps you're right the same team worked on both, but I wouldn't draw any large conclusions from what we've seen.

Also, the game is possibly a year away from release. A lot can (and will) happen.

I would like to see Oblivion style of character models. IMO they would suit the diablo style and look more like the old pre-rendered graphics of diablo series.

Anyway, I'm sure Blizzard won't fail to deliver the top quality.

Im so tired of the glossy shader look.
I play WoW alot, and I never get tired of the style, and I just wish that I could make my own game more like that.
Shaders really shine on technical surfaces though, like machines and metal in general.

I really see little resemblance between the two characters Mortiis posted, other than that they were made by the same artist/team.

General style of the characters are similar to WoW;
Yes. But when you have two different fantasy based games, both ripping off Games Workshop's Warhammer/White Dwarf look and feel, they're bound to have similarities.

If Games Workshop are too lazy to make the game, someone has to!!

Touche! :o>

Why does all these games have that crappy looking text that tells you what everones saying. I'm not complaining about the text, but can't they make it look more attractive to the eyes?

It looks more like debug info you'd use to test your game. I've noticed alot of games like that.

Why does all these games have that crappy looking text that tells you what everones saying.
Its called Communication - learn the internet generation.

Right now i really would be in the mood to play it.

They should add a new class to diablo III... The Thread Necromancer!

;P

I want a new NWN game that plays more like 1 with nicer graphics like D3. I never really got into Diablo much, it was just too much mashing and stat building. But right now things are a bit starved of these types of games.

Also glad its not a MMO. I wish someone would take some of the ideas from the first vampire masquarade game where someone can play as the GM in charge of the world and invite players in as heros make a nice multiplayer RPG of that kind.

As am I.

Ultima Online? (I personally hate what EA has done with it, and pre-AOS is the best era.)

Since this thread has risen from the dead, perhaps now would be a good time to say "I've never played a Diablo game. Perhaps I should, just in case it's something that's so cool my life pales into insignificance compared to what it could be with Diablo in it."

That is all.

The last 1/3 of NWN1 was really great. As far as i know they are doing a new module for NWN2. Problem is that all the modules i've played for NWN weren't as good as the original module, just too flat and unispired. Maybe they can come up with something more interesting in DragonAge.

Anyway Diablo 1 was a fantastic experience. Diablo 2 wasn't this good anymore. Diablo 3 at least looks good.

I actualy just been looking on some videos on Diablo III :)
It does look fun and the wizard class video looks really cool :)http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41303.html

Also the videos about the dying sequences or the runes are pretty cool were they for instance demonstrate the combination of a flaming skull(?) and multiplication/teleportation (can't remember exactly). This game will suck up quite some time of many people.

heh NWN2 I thought I was playing a nintendo game and got bored within an hour. Kind of like zelda in D&D land.

You really should try again. I hated NWN2 at first but by the time you actually reach NW you'll have a much better idea if you're going to like it or not.

Grisu: I hope they don't screw this one.

Plash: They probably will.

Like they did the previous two?

Like they did the previous two?
It's not the same team as the last two.

Why not? it's the same company. Sure, it's full 3D now, but I won't dare to judge the product or their competence based on something that wasn't released yet.

Anyways.. that comment was before I checked it out a little bit more. It looks awesome. BTW the TEAM makes the game, not the company.

you're right. But at least with blizzard I feel secure enough to think that they won't disappoint us :D

I have to confess that i dug out Diablo2, and contrary to the experience years ago it's fun this time, maybe because you also see it now as a more retro game. Anyway it helps on waiting for Diablo 3. :O)

For those who also want to replay it, Blizzard released the patch 1.12a last summer.

My friend convinced me to play Diablo II with him. The most boring 3 hours of my life and my wrist hurt. This isn't a game. It's a competition to see who can hold down the mouse button the longest and wave their mouse around the screen.

You should play it alone, and follow the story sometime..

Just had a look at the Diablo 3 screens and animations and the sorceress again, wow, although i also think a Diablo could look darker and more gore the look definately is just awesome. I guess this will be one of the most beautiful games ever, such a wonderful style!

This will be a game, if needed, i'll update my system for (Dungeon Master, can you hear me?!) and take some vacation.

finished diablo 1 like three or four times now, but try as i might i can't force myself to get through diablo 2 once. I get up to act 3 or act 4 and i just stop playing.

This is exactly how Diablo 3 should look: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/54697

Hmm, the video lacks some, quality?!

Uh.. yeah, its a low-res modification of the original..

I get up to act 3 or act 4 and i just stop playing.

Act 3 can be done in a long day or two shorter days (at least make sure you have all the waypoints of the first big part after the first day). Hell can be done in a normal day.

It also gets better if you replay it and your skills have improved so that at least you can invest some skills into multiple target enemy spells like Nova or Lightning Cascade (hope that's the proper one in english). If you don't have the time to there also exists a nice character editor to give the character a little push.

I don't doubt it, it just isn't going to happen, cuz by the time I reach that point I just can't be arsed anymore.
