RTS : 600-1000
3rd Person: 3000 - 7000

What is 1st person "assistant"? If you mean the side characters like Alyx in HL2, I would go for 4k - 8k.

But what's even more important than the polycount is the materials and texture layers you will use. (ex. diffuse, normal, specular etc.)
