Apparently they're not getting enough spoddy graduates with maths degrees into making games. I've always thought there were loads more people trying to get into games than there were jobs available.

I had no idea Ubisoft was in my hometown of Newcastle. I've just finished a maths master's degree - think I should go for a job in the games industry?

I've been a senior software engineer for the last 8 years & haven't got a degree of any kind, completely self taught by experience & necessity.

Guess that one's out for me.

Newcastle is great, I've been here working for Midway for ages and it's a nice place, providing you avoid the city centre on Saturday night!

I worked for a couple of Midway rebels one summer (making the infamous flop-ware "Breed"), I thought midway had closed down.

To all the newcastle haters - any city that has ducks and cows ranging free in the city centre is OK in my book.

I was at the Baltic arts centre today and there was a conference called gameshorizon 08 on, which I suppose explains why all this was in the news. Wish I could've wangled my way in to it.

The industry always claims there are not enough graduates in field x, because the more graduates there are the less they have to pay.

I always thought it was because the working enviroment was so poor? Just from what i hear ex-programmers say anyway :o)

The hours are crap. The only people that go home at a 'normal time' are the swines who demand you work til 11pm (again (on a sunday)).

Yup. I wouldn't advise anyone to take a job in the game industry. A game development studio is like a high-tech sweatshop.

If you go to live in Newcastle. What every you do don't tell them that you are a Sunderland supporter. You will never leave the place alive.
