Spore Creature Creator

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Spore Creature Creator

Hi all,

[edit]oops, sswift already posted about spore. Sorry for that.[/edit]

Have you seen the Spore Creature Creator yet? The new and promising game from EA.

Man, it's even better than I thought!
Great graphics!
Great creature behavior!
Endless possibilities and
what a nice and intuitive interface!

Impressive and inspiring!

Yeah, I've been waiting for Spore for a loong time, and it's nice to actually play with a little piece of it. I think the creature creator turned out pretty nice, almost perfect if it wasn't for the bugs (I can't load my saved creatures after restarting the program).

the creature creator is actually no little part. According their comments its more than the Spore Creator lab will allow you to do so from that point of view its the first expansion in game history beeing launched before the game ;-)

Yeah, the creature creator definitely isn't a "little" part of the game (it's probably one of the most technically challenging, for sure), but what I meant was it's one of the many gameplay / creative aspects included in the full game. For example in addition to the creature editor, the full game will have building editors, vehicle editors, space-ship editors, and of course all the stages of gameplay (which is what I'm really interested in).

will wright does it again ! :)

Click the star in the background on the main menu and then spin the galaxy fast clockwise.

Does it crash for anyone else when exiting? My computer just grinds to a halt with it.

@swift - cool ! :)
@perturbatio - not crashing on mine ...

Was a dodgy x rated Spore character vid going round the gaming sites, a single character comprising of two guys stuck together in a compromising position and moving in a very peculiar fashion.

a scary seahorse out of water??

Lol sswift ;) Strange creature... Maybe you can export the mesh for Xylvan ?
Maybe another candy world with this creature ? no ? :)

looks like an xbox controller

..this is my first creature.. hehehehe

Don't forget to spin the galaxy for an easter egg...

Eikon:
That's precisely what it is. :-) I didn't make it though, I found it on Kotaku.

This is Dudie.

I can't belive this, everyone is making crapy creatues, will anyone make any normal looking creature that could actually exsist? Why isn't anyone making humans or dinosaurus or dragons etc, everyone goes nuts and adds all kind of weird stuff on their creatues!

here's mine ! - lol

Maximo:
The editor is too limited to make good looking people. Try searching for "human" on spore.com and see for yourself.

If you want dragons though, there's plenty of those.

And here's a t-rex:

It looks silly, but that's what all the parts the provide are like.

I had so much problem with the fullversion. It started when I tried to order it. They didn't accept my card. :P (I even called my bank and talked to them about it and there was nothing wrong with my card, or the ammount of money on my account)

After many hours, that could be spent on playing around with the fullversion, I finally got it.
Then they wanted me to download some stupid downloadmanager to get it.

Then the damned thing didn't start. I got a splashscreen, and then I was back to the desktop again. More whated hours passed by.

Then I found out that some people managed to get it working by uninstalling the download manager. Worked for me.

But, naturally, when I finally got it working it was midningt and I had to get up early in the morning so no time to make ugly as sin, but funny, creatures. :P

Maximo, check Youtube. There are cows and humans and all sorts on there.

You've probably heared the news that EA-games bans sexual tinted creatures like a walking penis or vagina on their Sporepedia.
What's your opinion about that?
Do you agree with EA or shouldn't EA bother?

What if you make a creative game where players are able to create virually anything they like, and start posting/sharing 18+ content?

Ok, here is my opinion: Don't temper someone's creativity. Let people do whatever they please. And don't pay to much attention to it.
EA-games has no problems with the aggressive behavior of the creatures.

Please, share me your thoughts...

I agree with EA. They set the Eula agreement, so we all have to stick by that. Plus, I think if you're talking about content that's shared worldwide, the Eula seems perfectly reasonable to me.

EA-games has no problems with the aggressive behavior of the creatures.

That's because the aggressive behavior of the creates is limited to what they can do in the full game, which is in line with the game's rating.

they could do a kids Sporepedia and an adults Sporepedia
that way adults can make whatever they want without any limits
and the kids would have their own section which would
be a censored version.

...or adults could just grow up?

good point - lol

My question is not specifically about what EA should do.
What would you do/prefer to do when you design/develop a game with this potential? Do you want something about this in your Eula?

Another example: what if a game like Crayon Deluxe allows you to upload levels to a community. Do you think someone must screen all the uploads (eg. for sexual content)?

Just curious about your opinion...
Do we share one global thought about this?
Are there cultural differences that someone should take into account on this matter?

...or adults could just grow up?

NO! That's the problem. Adults should not grow up! :P

First of all, you can create whatever you want without uploading it. What you make is your business, until you upload it to Sporepedia, a database which will no doubt be viewed by children of all ages.

Surely you know that almost all respectable community based content systems (forums, etc.) have some sort of content filtering system, and Spore is certainly no exception. Spore is an E/T rated game and therefore the content that is permitted to be distributed between users of the game should be kept within the target ratings. Therefore 18+ content should without a doubt be removed instantly, and the creators of such content should be banned from uploading creatures after multiple offenses (of course not without warning).

I don't see how you could say anything otherwise. If you want to share your 18+ content, then fine, upload it to some 18+ rated website or e-mail it or whatever, but don't upload it to the main 6+ year old rated Sporepedia database because doing so is clearly wrong, unless you want to dispute what is 18+ content and what is 6+ content.

What if you make a creative game where players are able to create virually anything they like, and start posting/sharing 18+ content?

I'd decide on a target rating and stick to it, which of course means filtering out content that does not fit the target rating. Personally, I'd choose an E/T (6/13+) rating for various reasons.

I kind of like Sunshine Dreamer's thought there. A nice thing about the, err, sexually explicit creatures is that they are all completely useless. Natural selection would deal with them very quickly.
Wouldn't it be awesome, though, to stumble upon a planet full of strange, shrieking two-bodied monsters... and then blast them to pieces?

Trouble is, that would probably be happening very, very frequently...

An issue that springs to mind with filtering sexual content (a worthy cause) is the possibility that other things get filtered, too. For example, no more Mario space ships! If EA sets up the infrastructure to filter stuff, they will then be obligated to filter what those copyright holders demand unless they have a very good reason not to. Before, they would probably willingly accept that it's the fault of whoever made the content in the first place and really out of EA's control.

If EA sets up the infrastructure to filter stuff, they will then be obligated to filter what those copyright holders demand unless they have a very good reason not to.

I think regardless of 18+ filters, they'd still have to filter out copyrighted content just the same. It's not like the legal copyright system cares whether or not you have the capability to avoid breaching it.

However, I'm not entirely sure that they will filter out stuff like that. There may be some loophole, etc. that permits EA to allow users to create their own models that resemble copyrighted material because it's not actually a copy of the real thing (it's a Spore caricature, with Spore parts, done by some player somewhere in the world, not EA). But I don't know, that's just the impression I got when reading about the copyright issue with spore.
