I have bought yellow dog linux ps3(last friday on ebay) and I will be reciving it tomorrow.
Had anyone got it and it is any good?
Yellow Dog Linux was originally targeted at Apple PowerPC machine, and I've played with it briefly on a G4 Mac.
Since they changed their focus to the PS3, Yellow Dog Linux uses Enlightenment, which is pretty and interesting, but also not in the least mainstream or supported by anybody who writes 'real life' software. For a 'real' desktop GNU/Linux OS, you're better off with a Gnome or KDE-based distribution and the choice of software that comes with them. But since the PS3 has only very limited RAM, the Yellow Dog folks had to choose something with a smaller footprint than the two big GNU/Linux desktops and went with Enlightenment.
I remember YDL as a nice distribution for media playback, but would always choose Fedore Core 8 "Werewolf" or newer as my GNU/Linux desktop system for PowerPC machines.
Anyone else know much on the subject?
I'm tempted to download a build of Ubuntu that works, and as far as I know the only real problem is that the PS3's RSX (GPU) is limited, although that isn't much an issue for me.
(was thinking of making it my 'PC' for home so I can still do my e-mail/web-surfing/media without having to lug my laptop to/fro college)
As far as I know, Sony made Yellow Dog Linux the official GNU/Linux distribution for the PS3, and GPU support is limited by design and meant to stay limited.
If you only need a distro for the PS3, stay with YDL. It does all of the things that you've listed.
