Word has it that tomorrow some actual gameplay footage from Duke Nukem Forever will be shown on the web-based "Jason Hall Show".
When the video goes up, you'll be able to view it here:
http://crackle.comDon't get too too excited though... The show's supposed to be only five minutes long, and it looks from the preview like there'll be a bunch of talking and screwing around. If we're lucky we'll get 30 seconds of footage.
I hope it looks better here than it did in the brief trailer they released at the end of last year. I was dissapointed with that. I thought the game looked awesome when it was in the Unreal engine back in 2001, but what I saw in the latest trailer had the same crappy plastic look as Doom 3 and Prey.
This will be interesting!

DNF Trailer (Or Lack Thereof) Follow-up
Shacknews has follow-up on indications that the upcoming debut of the "Jace Hall Show" will include "an exclusive trailer to the long-anticipated Duke Nukem Forever game" (story). 3D Realms themselves fueled the fire of speculation by posting in their forums, "This show may have landed the greatest scoop of all time in the history of gaming… We shall see!" Subsequently George Broussard offered a response to Shacknews wondering what all the fuss is about:
I have no knowledge of any new trailer. I'd tell you if I did.
This is something we did for Jason months ago and it's not quite going to be what you expect. We didn't want him unveiling the game at that point so the piece was done as a favor for Jason, who we've known for 15 years.
I just don't want people getting too excited over this. The teaser trailer in Dec was about all the teasing we'd planned on. We weren't sure when, or if, this show would ever appear. I look forward to seeing what Jason did with the show. I can promise you that the next time you see the game it'll be in substantial form.
Only thing I hope for is that the text "When it's done!" will be replaced by a date in the near future.
Duke Nukem 3D was the greatest game ever when I was young and the only other FPS I'd tried was Doom and Wolfenstein 3D.
Now its probably just going to be another generic FPS with Duke Nukem as main character - i.e. a flop.
I loved the pipebombs, the holoimages, the cameras and so on, but now its done to death, and the novelty has worn off.
Sorry, but this game will SO dissapoint. Trust me. Back then it was cool, but like all fondly remembered games, nostalgia goes a long way.
I'm inclined to agree with the masses here, it's going to have to be the best game ever made to live up to the time taken / hype and somehow, I don't think it's going to be.
Like Wiebo says, nothing can live up to nostalgia.
It won't break new boundaries and/or push the limits in any way, that's for sure.
But I would buy it if it contained a lot of humor and countless enemies. Duke 3D isn't a thinking mans game, it's all about blowing stuff up.
At least if you ask me.
What's it got to live up to?
What made Duke fun was that enemies exploded into gibs, Duke had funny one liners, and visited interesting environments like strip clubs. And we've seen the video from 2001. It may look different now than it did then, but we know the game has all that, and more. Drivable vehicles, interactive soda machines, interactive pole dancers, and more cool environments than you can shake a stick at. Plus decent supporting characters.
Duke won't be a masterpiece of storytelling like HL2 was, but where HL2 made you hide whenever you were confronted with more than one enemy, I suspect Duke will be all about charging right into the fracas, guns blazing. And that's what will make it different and cool.
If being ported to the Doom 3 engine didn't force them to take all that cool stuff out which we saw in the 2001 trailer, that is.
"This show may have landed the greatest scoop of all time in the history of gaming… We shall see!"
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
That reminded me of the movie "Grandma's Boy" when J.P. says
All I've ever cared about was video games and they made me a millionaire. So maybe I don't know what the Civil War was, or who invented the helicopter even though I own one, but I did beat The Legend of Zelda before I could walk. I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.
It's up now!
http://crackle.com/c/jacehallSkip ahead to about 4 minutes in. The actual gameplay footage starts at around 4:20. The footage is very brief, but you get to see several different enemies, weapons, and environments. It looks a lot better here than it did in the last trailer released, but it's kind of hard to tell how it really looks when the video is shot with a handheld camera.
Hmmmm... I think my granny would finish it in 12 years they've spent so far.
And... it looks just like another boring FPS.
Barney
It looks like Prey. I bet they ripped some stuff out of Prey to make it.
EDIT: Oh, after looking at the screenshots closer, it doesn't look like Prey asset, but you can see that it's the same artists somehow. Looks good.
"And... it looks just like another boring FPS."
What did you EXPECT it to be, an RPG?
It's an FPS with NPC's running around like HL2, driveable vehicles, and cool weapons. What more do you want?
Screenshot 9: The "select gun" GUI looks like Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal's GUI.
Except you know, HL1 had a GUI which looked like that long before Ratchet and Clank, and half the games out there have transparent boxes with icons for their GUI because it looks good.
Except you know, HL1 had a GUI which looked like that long before Ratchet and Clank ...
I was just saying.

"The forums are closed because the search is being rebuilt due to repair some index corruption. The forums will return shortly."
Hah! People were on those forums all night waiting for news of the video's release and now they can't discuss it moments after it's been released.
Also, I've beaten Kotaku, VE3D, Duke4.net, and even 3D Realms to the punch by almost an hour in posting that the video is live, with screenshots. I should run my own gaming news website. That's terrible. :-)
I'm feeling it.
It looks both polished and very, very anonimous. What's about the claustrophobic tunnels? The original was set in witty apocalyptical urban places, while the game footage looks like Half Life redone with the Prey engine.
I actually found the ancient second trailer (
this one from 2001) far more interesting. I guess they should have released it despite the outdated graphics by the day it would came up (that is, circa 2002/2003). Unless there wasn't anything really done but the trailer of course. :)
It's true that some monsters look like they came out of Ratchet and Clank. But the DukeNukem3D had L.A.R.D.s driving tankish vehicles. That last trailer does look more interesting. I kind of forgot about how hyped this game was back then.
Doiron:
If they haven't deviated much from the 2001 trailer, then what you're seeing here is probably a bit of Area 51, or maybe some of the Hoover Dam.
But the game will take place in and around Las Vegas, so I'm sure there'll be plenty of more open outdoor environments, with drivablt vehicles, just like they showed in the older trailer. They wouldn't have gotten rid of all that cool stuff.
The older trailer was more interesting, but I'm a little more confident now that the game didn't turn to total crap when they switched to the Doom 3 engine.
If they're still using the aging Doom 3 engine, then I think it's not going to be the big game it was supposed to be in the first place.
Even Ennemy Territory: Quake Wars doesn't look that stunning even thoe it's using an engine that is a cross between the Doom 3 one and Tech 5.
Yet, I suppose it depends on the art.
Ill buy it just to own the game that took 12 years to develope ! That and I love duke3d

Granted, I take your point, this is game footage and not a showcase trailer.
However, they could have done a reboot and ditched the old project completely in order to get the game done. I don't think we'll see the scenes or the plot from the old trailer, expecially considered the direction taken by games derived from Doom 3. I'd love to be proven wrong though: with all its cheesy b-movie ideas, the old trailer still kicks ass in my opinion. :)
I don't see the plasticy look and low res textures much here like you did in Prey. I also don't see heavy use, or any use, for that matter, of stencil shadows, and stencil shadows would be what killed the performance of Doom 3 and Prey. So they may have just shut those off and done most of the shadows with lightmapping.
Looks nice to me. I especially like the red balls and the teeth alien. Curious to see how the gameplay will turn out. Making shooters isn't easy these days when you're used to games like HL2. Reminds me that i've, despite of the sometimes behind you popping up aliens, really enjoyed playing Doom3 too.
