Blender's open source movie
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Blender's open source movie very nice!
Awesome work! I never realised Blender was so powerful. How long did the film take?

Ah, great. Thanks. Looks like a great website for me to get my teeth into.
Don't forget the reason for these projects is to drive blender development.
The fruits of project peach (Big Buck Bunny) can be found here (Blender 2.46).
The game development additions to Blender from project apricot are also starting to trickle through. You can download a compiled version (for multiple platforms) of apricot's development branch here.

The production files are available for download someplace, so you yourself can render the movie should you wish. Don't ask me where tho.
Quality! :)
I really enjoyed that... Top stuff!

It`s amazing what is being done with free software these days. Great animated film!
Anyone know what software was used to edit\score the film? Was that open source software too?
Jason.

LoL that was great. Was a bit jerky with HD switched on though (dont have the HW anyway)
However, as bad as some think it is, it almost always makes it onto short lists of hi-end rendering-suite comparisons and has been used in 'the industry' a fair few times too, most notably being spiderman 2 where they did a lot of animation work & prototyping with it. The fact that its open source and has easy python scripting makes it attractive for doing special custom stuff that would otherwise be impossible/difficult otherwise.

Its certainly powerful & the animator is awesome. It has a bad rep because its interface is like nothing you will have seen before, making it off-putting to many. However, as bad as some think it is, it almost always makes it onto short lists of hi-end rendering-suite comparisons and has been used in 'the industry' a fair few times too, most notably being spiderman 2 where they did a lot of animation work & prototyping with it. Blender... (like the post said :) that was cool.
Just to elaborate on Danman's post.
Blender was used to model, rig, animate, render, composite and edit/score the final movie.
The whole thing was done with FOSS (there's a full list in the credits) with the only other software used for content creation being Gimp for textures and Inkscape for the logo and poster work*.
*I'm not 100% sure about Inkscape usage

They have a list of studio software used in the credits. My favourite part was the music :)
Some animation oddities, but this is definitely of very good quality.

To appreciate the quality of the film you really need to see it in full HD 1920x1080 on a big screen with a surround speaker system as well, it really is top stuff. If the soundtrack alone doesn't win an award I'd be surprised.
All the production files are available through torrents under a creative commons licence so you can do whatever you wish with the characters etc, or you can help support Blender Foundation and future products by purchasing the double DVD. Once the open game (project Apricot), utilising the character models and enviornements of Big Buck Bunny, is complete all the production files for the game will be released as well.
A new open movie project is set for 2009 after the big recode/refactor of Blender (much fabled 2.50 release). Tentaively named Project Durion it is rumoured to concentrate on the special effects side of Blender (explosions, lots of expolosion is how it has been described), just as Peach (Big Buck Bunny) was lots of fur and bunnies and brought us the new particle system.

One thing I noticed: A few scenes seemed to have the grass not reacting to characters (is it bad that I wrote "players" by accident?). Notably, the first. Others did it just fine, though, so maybe it's just me. Would have been kind of funny if the big bunny made enormous impacts in the grass, though. Pleasantly enough, such an effect is possible via the fancy new particle physics!
Hair is indeed excellent.
Is it weird that I felt sad for the bunny at the beginning?

If you listen to the commentaries by the team members you really appreciate the film is a journey for them as their skills progress and develop throughout the project.
This was certainly true for the first open movie, Elephant's Dream, where the team's developing skills could actually be tracked scene by scene. The overall quality of BBB is, imho, much better and consistent.
Tight deadline, limited resources (people) and a very, very tight budget mean there will always be areas that can be improved.
Can't wait to see how the open game, using CrystalSpace game engine, will turn out.
