Game Maker and Multimedia Fusion 2

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Game Maker and Multimedia Fusion 2

I`ve been looking at tools like Game Maker lately as I have seen some pretty neat stuff being made with both it and Multimedia Fusion 2.

I`m wondering why the creators of the better games don`t switch over to a language like Blitz as from what I have seen creating something complex requires pretty much the same sort of coding as a language like Blitz anyway.

What benefits do the users gain from using such tools once they have progressed to this sort of level? I can understand the appeal to beginners but once you have to write scripts etc... in Game Maker isn`t that almost the same thing that the user didn`t want to learn to do in the first place?

Anyone here have any experience on using either program who could shed some light on the situation?

The programs obviously have something good going for them as the people using them are creating some cool stuff.

I've thought about MMF2 a few times (now it's hardware accelerated) because it allows you to easily manage and visually place your art and sound resources.

I have no idea why people use Game Maker. It's slow as anything... but I guess people like it because it's free.

I don`t know, I`ve seen some pretty smooth stuff in Game Maker too. Take a look at this for example,

There`s definitely an advantage in being able to visually place your graphics and other resources like in these tools I agree, especially for the less technically minded people (like me :)

These two tools seemed to have come on leaps and bounds in recent years.

I downloaded GameMaker 6 a while ago. Its kinda fun if you want to make a simple game quickly, but I agree with you, once you go into scripts what's the point?

Once I reached the level where I was wanting to write scripts I just said forget GameMaker, why not just do it in Blitz?

The only advantage I can see is perhaps they don't like the style of a traditional IDE.

GameMaker is very good at prototyping your game idea, however....

If you need to use script with GameMaker, I'd rather suggest you to try other programming languages if possible.

I didn't mean GameMaker is not good, but speed does make difference.

BTW, if you're tending to try MMF2, please try Scirra Construct, it's a free-and-opensource alternative of MMF, not mature yet but pretty promising.

gamemaker has a very low entry point - e.g. its not complicated
so when someone gets accustomed to it maybe they dont want to switch.
I find it almost impossible to use other languages because they are more difficult than blitz so my frustation tolerance is very low.

plus gamemaker is very well-known

It's promising, but it's DX9 only I believe.
