Robokill Released!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Robokill Released!

Hi Everyone,

We just put up Robokill at Rock Solid Arcade, a Flash game we've been working on for a few months now.

It's not written in Blitz (obviously, being a Flash game!), but a large chunk of the code is auto generated by a game editor written in Blitz that handles all of the boring stuff.

If you could have a go and tell me what you think, I'd really appreciate it. Definitely test out the ordering system ;)

Check it out here!

good game....it remind me of alien breed :)

Awesome! Any way to play it full screen?

Very nice!! Quite addictive, and nicely polished. :-)

I am not much of a flash fan but this game was actually quite addictive and fun!

Well done, excellent work =)

Just maxxed out the demo. Very much liked it, the only bug I came across is the text box isn't big enough when you input your name, anyone with more than 4 characters gets cut off.

1 Suggestion to inprove the game would be to add colour differences to light, med, and heavy gun bullets. Its a little dissapointing buying a heavy blaster and theres no visual differnce to the bullets.

I'm thinking Paradroid '90, I'm thinking I like!

Looks great from the screenies. I think it's a shame that it's in Flash though and not a downloadable game because I've found that normally Flash isn't as smooth as you can make a downloadable game due to it being shown in a browser. (Yep just took a look and it's got that flash low framerate look about it). This looks like it would have made an ace downloadable game :-) What was you reasoning behind Flash? (sorry I don't mean that to sound negative, it's just an observation - me thinking aloud)

Good luck with it!

This is nice

Just played the whole lot - very addictive, very slick! Reminded me of Paradroid 90 too...

It won't let me play unless I let it store files locally. It says that I can continue and my progress won't be saved, but it doesn't continue, just goes back to the menu.

That's intentional, because if someone gets into the game and invests the hour or more playing and then realises that they didn't allow saved content, that's a major issue. I'd rather have people who don't want files saved locally not able to play than for people to lose all their progress (the game is very long).

The game is basically not worth playing if you aren't going to be saving your progress - it's an RPG!

Just had a good play. Good stuff!

Posted some news about it for you:

I thought this might be the case, but then shouldn't it say "if you choose not to adjust this setting you cannot continue" rather than "if you choose not to adjust this setting your progress will not be saved"? The latter leads me to believe I can play without saving my data if I want to.

I'm not sure if this is meant to be embedded into a web page or not (I've got a few proxies I wouldn't mind putting it up on) but I think requiring the user allow the program to save files to their computer would be a deal killer for many people. Would it be practical to use browser cookies to store the data instead?

Great game and it runs good enough on my PowerBook G4. I've experienced a few slow downs when too many objects where flying around, and playing it with the Touchpad only isn't easy, but doable. I'll play it again on my Mac Pro tomorrow.

I hate that you use PayPal only -- let's just say there is a story behind it why I refuse to use their "services". So no deal, thanks to PayPal.

I also think it's an issue that you don't offer a downloadable standalone version of the game. For people playing during work hours, a browser version is fine enough. But I want to be able to play it offline and without a stupid browser window around it.

One thing. I'm running my desktop res at 1024x768 and I'm using Firefox with the standard toolbars (no extra ones) and the game window doesn't quite fit. If I have the shield bar at the top I can't see the buttons at the bottom (or any bottom doors). I use the shortcut keys and check the map so it's no big deal.

For me the game may have been slightly more fun if the map was not all there at the start so that you had to explore it and unopened doors were marked on it. Also why are the doors always in the same place i.e. central, it may have been more fun to have them in different places and have rooms cut in half (like one room on level 3) or small tunnels etc so it could be more mazelike at times...

Get a bigger/better monitor and/or use a higher res.

...or...

Hit F11

Me likey! 8o]

Runs well for me, even in Firefox.

I agree with boomboom's comment about the bullet types.

It would be nice to see a downloadable version with an embedded player (I'm not well versed in Flash, so forgive me if that's an idiotic suggestion).

Gabriel - Good point. We've changed it to say that you can't continue in the latest version.

Winni - I'm very surprised that it runs well on your G4! Flash on the PPC macs is horrendously slow. I understand that not everybody likes Paypal, we'd like to get another payment option up soon.

Grey - Yeah, that kind of sucks. Not much we can do about it though :(

We might put exploration in the sequel/expansion.

We probably won't do a downloadable version, for the forseeable future at least. Too much hassle!

Congratulations Michael - great game - great graphics - great team!

Another one 'in the bag' :) What is next?

IPete2.

I don't want higher res as it makes things harder to see on my aging tortured programmer eyes ;-) I guess I *could* buy a massive new screen though...

Yeah what's next Michael, you always make cool stuff. I hope it's a downloadable action game!

Michael, yes, I was surprised, too. But it's the last generation 1.67 GHz G4 with 2 GB RAM, Leopard 10.5.2 and the latest Flash Player 9. Anyway, it's really playable on that machine.

I'll now give it a shot on my Mac Pro.

Make the engine in Blitz for the game engine and you could definately sell it, reminds me of Alien Breed too :). I would buy that :)

Damnit just spent half an hour playing it :)

Ok, it runs perfectly well on the Mac Pro. It's actually so fast that I don't believe it's Flash.

But I just lost my nerve when the "robots reclaimed 3 rooms". Three? Oops.

Great game, anyway. But for the next version, put in some adventure game elements. And maybe a bit of horror, too.

That reminds me: You're not afraid of lawsuits from John Carpenter, Sierra and Jerry Goldsmith/Paramount/The Star Trek franchise? That level-up sounds reminds me a lot of the Star Trek fanfare, the space station looks like the one in System Shock and, well, Darkstar, we know who made that movie. ;-)

Congratulations Michael - great game - great graphics - great team!

Thanks guys! We're trying to figure out what's next now. Probably not something quite as big as Robokill, at least for another few games.

Edz - I don't think I'm cut out to develop and support a sellable engine! I love my hackish code and stick by it. :)

Winni - We'll probably make the room reclaim more frequent, but cap it to 2, 3 isp robably a bit steep! We didn't actually even draw any inspiration from those sources, so I don't think that will be a problem.

Great game, and sweet graphics. Really detailed and polished. Only one thing: I'd clear a room and get the clear-a-room-shield-bonus that I get from an upgrade. Then, I'd destroy a booby-trapped crate, kill the 'bots in it, and get the bonus again. Is this intentional? Should be easy to fix if it's not. Personally, I needed it.

This really impressed me. Well done! It ran very smoothly on my intel iMac but I would love to have seen the actual frame rate. Is there a show frame rate option?

Flash is looking more attractive by the day...

Excellent game, well done to yourself and Rod.

I expect this will run even better using Flash 10, too - is it possible to make a Flash 10 version now? I read somewhere about just needing to set a HTML flag somewhere, don't know how true that is...

amazing game and amazing artwork, beautiful :)

If you made the game as a standalone game ie play offline it would be brilliant :).

this game should get more comments, bumping it up :)

It's on casual review today: http://www.casualreview.com/article/95/Flash_Friday_Robokill?PHPSESSID=bb803083e78926cd813c468c2328b70b

It was also on Jay is Games recently.

looks awesome!

I've been away for a few weeks and just had a chance to check this out and it's a nother great little game with a lot of nice attention to detail.

Gratz!

Darkheart

standalone would be good, i think the turrets that shoot the blue lasers are a little overpowered. been addicted for the past 2-3 hours. and love the detail and over-all graphics.
