no, not world of warcraft, I've just finished watching beowulf and well, wow, CGI is fairly coming on. Empire gave it four stars, I can see why. The film shows you how the story has been in circulation for 2000 years, I strongly recommend it if only for the demonstration of how CGI is coming on.

yeah I'm playing it again for the second time while I surf the forums - they are eye candy (;-) and no, I didn'y forward the film to that bit it is sheer coincidence guvnor honest.
In all serious though it is a very good film with a fantastic script with a couple of morales chucked in for good measure, all that glitters is not gold.

yeah, It was a good choice for my first I max experience.

How was the movie in 3d at any rate for those who saw it that way?
My only interest in seeing it was for the 3d-experience, but the closest cinema that even sported the proper hardware was 5 hours away!

@Evak, must've been something else at the IMax. I've seen the space show and MAtrix reloaded at the IMax, both pretty good but not sure it was worth the amount they charged for tickets.

3D was pretty impressive. Not crazy about the movie overall but it had a few good moments.
The cgi was really good overall, however the animation (especially facial) was somewhat lacking.

Kicked major a$$!! But without the 3d gimmick I though it was rather average.
I saw it in full 3D at the Imax cinema in Bangkok. Well, meh....
Technically impressive, but the film was a bore. The animation on the horses was horrible, I guess they weren't motion captured and they had no talented animators around to animate them. They used motion capture, and I believe facial motion capture for the actors. I still don't think realistic 3D works, it just becomes stiff and weird (like a film with a bunch of bad actors). If doing animation a more cartoony style is much more expressive and entertaining. And if you want realistic characters, just use real actors.
Personally I found the short film with the Thai national anthem to honor the king that they ran before the film to be much more interesting. Everyone had to stand through it too. :)

Btw, if you're looking for a good cgi flick, watch Ratatouille. Probably the greatest cgi film to date.

Except the story in the movie has little to do with the actual story of Beowulf. Even their "clever" use of Anglo-Saxon for Grendel's speech was flawed (grammatically incorrect in several places). Granted, I'm probably a purist, whereas the average viewer might not watch with as careful an eye. Still, the movie absolutely raped the plot and ignored some of the best themes of the original text. As a movie, it was blah, too...

In other words: I have stopped understanding what is special about fancy CGI. Movie CGI tends to be decent, being that good stuff is by artists who know what looks good. I do not see the lack of fancy volumetric lighting and quadruple-advanced cloth simulation stopping Toy Story, for example, from being a good movie.
(Games, for some reason, are a different matter: A lot of video game art teams just plain suck).

I prefered BeoWulf to Ratatoulie, so there. Yep , I really enjoyed Toy Story, I have two children and lost count of the amount of times I seen and laughed at the comedy within Toy story (in part due to Tim Allen and Tom Hanks delivery as well as the animation). So, maybe I'm a bit jaded when it comes to animated files, I do not rate Ratatoulie as higly as toy story.
I also liked the 300, a bit of gore and brutality is maybe my thing. There certainly some of that in BeoWolf. So, the film raped the story, the film has generated enough interest in me to want to read the actual story. No bad thing.
