I’m always amazed that something so simple (backup) can be made so complicated and unreliable by big software companies, I recently had to upgrade from Backup Exec 11d to 12 as it was the only way to fix a problem with Backup Exec. Not best pleased about having to spend money on what was really a support issue but at least the darn backups have worked fine since. Except for today when the backup errored because it failed to backup it’s own internal database (it uses MSDE) because Symantec don’t actually grant a license for this, up until now it had been using the trial license for this “feature”. If you want to backup the DB they expect you to buy the full SQL license.
So they now have a brick-level backup program which can’t actually complete a full-in place restore when installed under it’s standard license…
Fortunately the only product that’s effected is Backup Exec so you could restore everything else and then have to reinstall Backup Exec afterwards but it does seem fundamentally dumb. You might want to consider this when choosing backup software for your servers. Too many accountants running the show these days…
