Wow, that's the best stream of consciousnness post I've ever seen here. From B movies to games to giant ants to ant meshes, and all in just four lines. If you can go from meshes to teapots to weasels to Romania then I'll be even more impressed!
Sorry, I don't have an ant mesh. Can't be difficult to model, though.

a few google images on ants and their anatomy should prove usefull iir they arnt much more than blobs stuck together with 6 legs (in simple geometrical terms that is) you could make a basic render with blitz's built in primatives before going hardcore and cranking up your moddeler of choice

a 60 foot spider cant lift its own weight (great one for all the aracnaphobes out their)
guess that holds true for giANT's too as they are a mite bit smaller than alot of the common spiders i see so human or car sized might be pushing it

I'm actually working on somthing else at the moment, but may take a break and try and knock somnthing up nice a quick for this.
Interaction will be via the player placing pheramone markers on the map (overhead view), can be either food or enemy marker. Ants either move towards nearest target (workers - food or food store, soldiers - enemies) or if nothing in range towards strongest marker of thier type.
Workers take food back to nest, which makes more ants.
Food is either incental, (dead people, cactus, prams) or from stores that can be exhausted (rubbish tips, supermarkets, trailer parks, schools etc....)
Enemies - get better as game goes on, rednecks, police, soldiers, tanks......
Levels start in the desert and become more urban. To win a level you need to get enough food to make another queen ant. To lose, nest gets destroyed.
Should be quite simple to knock off (famous last words)
Funny how Hollywood turns a cute tiny bug into a giant evil creature.

but aye give hollywood any scientific or historical fact and they will botch it up to the extent that 'america saves the world from ...' even if america wasnt discovered by europeans at this time
There was a surprisingly good knock off of Them called The Black Scorpion. It was shot it Mexico on a very low budget. The stop motion effects were done by Willis O'Brien, who did the original King Kong. They were remarkable considering the financial constraints. Unfortunately they ran out of money. The last few minutes of the film look awful, using incredibly cheesy looking matte shots.
For some reason i got that confused with "They Live" with roddy piper. Great film that!

Interesting as the conspiracy in Sam&Max is also about T.H.E.M.
If you love Them!, then you should also watch Saul Bass' great movie "Phase IV". The ants in that movie are not gigantic, but have developed a form of collective intelligence instead.

cute is still not the word for the 'creepie crawlies' of the world

they live is one of my all time fave movies and it had meg evil lynn foster in it as a bonus
i used to explain my perpetual dark glasses by sugesting a fight in an alley

"THEM" is strictly about that particular movie. It was enough of a B movie classic that the term has become somewhat generic though.
And I love that movie, one of the classic fifties B movies, along with "This Planet Earth", and "Teenagers from Space", OK so the last one is only good when MST3K got their hands on it...
