Race Driver - XBOX 360 demo - nice - very nice!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Race Driver - XBOX 360 demo - nice - very nice!

Hiya guys ('n gals),

I just downloaded the Race Driver Grid demo last night for my xbox 360 and wow what a demo it is - wanted to lshare.

I have been waiting for a better looking race game for my console of choice - having seen GT 5 Prologue - and from what I can tell my wait could beover very soon.

This race game is gritty, fantastic to look at, plays incredibly well and even calls me by my name ( a feature I have been waiting for since Lotus on the Atari)

If you have a PS3 or XBOX 360 (or PC) download this weekend!

IPete2.

[edit - oops I should have said its a code masters game - and there's a microsite for it too http://www.racedrivergrid.com/ ]

Holy ****!

Check out the crash deformations/physics at 4:18. Quite sure even GT5 doesn't do that.

ooOOooo!

i was undecided if it was the driver wanting to show how good the crashes are or if hes just as bad at driving games as i am :))

OT: Maybe you should lay off the swearing a little? Third time today.

np edited it out to bad

wel... the you tube vid seems okay - but PGR2 on the XBox is still the biznezz.

This is a game that can sell the 360, to me anyway.

heh, anyway theres a pc demo for download at:

http://www.gamershell.com/download_25620.shtml

For those with decent vid cards :) Might not need a 360. I wonder how it will run on my 7800GS, hopefully well at 800x600 with effects turned up :)

Didn't realize this demo was on Live yet. I have been waiting for it. Gonna grab it tonight and check it out. I am a driving game junkie.

Thanks for the heads up.

excellent, downloading now!

I'm downloading it. 12 minutes to go.

*shouts "SCHTARTEN!" and smashes keyboard to bits*

Anybody else watching those videos totally naked?

Might just buy my 360 tomorrow and give it a good shunt.

I'm so excited I could literally inflate and burst.

Do you have to pay to download stuff? Do I have to pay for a XBox ISP or just use my PC connection? If it is all free, then I will buy a 360 with a HD and then just download loads of demos.

Heh, I'm not as dumb as I look.

I found a PC demo for that thing. I just saved myself the same £200 that I nearly spent on a 360 and GTA 4.

Oh yeh.

OMG, what a let-down!

OK it didn't run brilliantly on my laptop, but I don't think I'll be bothering trying it on my desktop PC tomorrow. They couldn't even be bothered adding an icon so you can actually start the damn thing after its installed. I had to root about in Program Files to find where it'd installed it to.

Burnout Paradise owns for crashes and destruction, and of course totally and utterly insane speed, first game I've ever played were it makes my eyes water just playing it (apart from Candy Bottom's "Extreme Insertathon Extravaganza" but that's another topic entirely).

Darkheart

Really enjoyed the 360 demo. Probably because I was actually able to keep the car on the track - with the likes of PGR and Forza I have a struggle to do even that.

I will have the PC demo within the next 40 minutes.

I'll see how well the sucker looks on my 8800 GTX gaming rig. It better look as good as it does in the videos.

heh, still 20 mins to go, been downloading for over 4 hours now

Heh, I love the Audio Name option - never seen that in a computer game before.

Just wacking all the settings up to full.

Wow!!! It looks like it does in the YouTube video!

The visual damage is great.

However, it has that ANNOYING DOF built-in setting.

I AM SICK AND ABSOLUTELY SICKENED, TO THE POINT OF BEING SICK, THAT DEVELOPERS INSIST ON FORCING DOF.

Hey, this things is full of XML files - you can literally reprogram the game engine.

Sweet Jesus! I think even the media (the cars) are reconstructable - there's like billions of settings for them.

You can even reprogram the camera views.

I don't know whether to play this game all just reprogram it.

I bet I can even turn of the DOF.

wow.

it runs well on my a64 3000+ 7800GS 2gb in 1024x768 with high setting minus AA :). Has direct support for 360 gamepad. even down to the menu buttons being 360 specific. I keep forgetting why I get frustrated with racers, the steering is too sensitive for me, probably because it works different to a wheel.

Anyway, seems pretty good, but I'm not sure I have the patience to learn the controls. Times like this I wish I had a wheel :(. I have a dreamcast wheel, wonder if theres any way to make that work on the PC lol.

Great Scott! check out the 'raceload.jpk' file :))

Looks like we can change around alot of stuff.

crawls out from under rock DOF?

re wheels aye some controll methods just dont suiit some games

audio name's bout bloody time too
not since one ot the mid 90's interplay startreck TNG games have we had the ability to have your computer read text files in a real voice and not bonzia buddy-esque squawlks

the game version beat the bt engineers version hands down
iir it was a patented script that contained almost gobbledegook that when split up with timers etc could be parsed and sound just like jean luc/charles xavier/whatever hes in next

I wonder if anyone has yet converted the PlayStation Scene-Graph binary to ascii and thus converted the geometry media (cars, objects, etc) into .b3d meshes that load straight in Blitz3D like a rat up a turnip?

:)

heh, I think this is the best racer in quite some time, kind of like PGR2 but with more tweakables and a PC version. Just need to get a wheel from somewhere. Saw Nascar heat with logitec Formula force unused on craigslist for $30. AD's 5 days old now but fingers crossed :)

I like it - it's a gift to tweakers, modders, reverse engineers and, of course, the super-reversers.

^ super-reverser

I am so getting a steering wheel, the demo will be sufficient for me :)

well I'm getting that wheel dropped off tomorrow, might have to get a used TDU again too. Grid seems to be the best commercial racer yet though, similar AI to what Cygnus did in our fun racer :)

Just tried this on my desktop PC (Nvidia 7600GT) since I had nothing better to do.

Doesn't run at all. Windows immediately reports that its stopped working before anything's actually happened. Quite amazing as it actually worked on my laptop with integrated graphics, albeit slowly.

Oh, and it didn't create any shortcuts whatsoever on the start menu again!

Down-right sloppy, if you ask me. Don't PC gamers expect better?

Runs fine on my 7600GS... well, not fine... it runs quite slow and a tad ugly compared to my brother's 8800 quad-core system, on which it runs silky smooth and super-fast at 1600. But, it runs.

It creates shortcuts here on XP and runs really well on my pretty ancient gaming rig (single core athlon 64 3000+ with 7800GS). Was quite shocked that it ran so well. I have the graphics on ultra settings but no AA at 1024x768 and the game is completely playable with all the cars on screen at once. Impressive :)

I'm using the current Omega drivers, and just installed SP 3 for XP. I tried upping the priority to high which locks up the game at the splash screen, so make sure you run it in normal priority.

I like it enough I went and got a wheel just to play the demo on :)

I grabbed this yesterday, I have now gained back my respect for Codemasters. This is truely awesome. The AI is pretty good too. Looks like they're using an AI algo that is very similar to that used in our AI demo, which pleases me- my code was easy, so I never understood why it wasn't seen in games....

Worked fine here, yet I don't have an XBOX controller to properly drive the car and use the menus. But it looks just like advertized :)

Runs with all settings on high and looks beautiful on my system, an XBox 360... Oh wait, there aren't any video settings, it just looks great guaranteed.

I find it alot harder with a steering wheel.

@Plash - showoff lol!!!!

Oh, and it didn't create any shortcuts whatsoever on the start menu again!

Vista? A lot of games are using Vista's Game Explorer instead of the start menu ( I'd prefer both, personally ) so it's worth checking if it's in the Games Explorer instead. But it might well not be. I have noticed some games just fail to install shortcuts altogether lately. I'm not sure if it's a trend or if they're trying to get into Vista's Games Explorer and failing.

Just reinstalled Vista (had an electrical accident with my HD a few days ago and its not been right since), and tried the demo again. Yeah it does put a shortcut in the Game Explorer.

However...

It still doesn't work. On further investigation, people on the codemasters forum reveal that this demo will not work on any system with less than a dual core CPU! The recommended specs are so high that probably bloody NASA couldn't run it.

How crap are Codemasters?!

Lesson: Don't use PCs for games. Buy an Xbox/PS3.

Thats not true, my CPU is a single core athlon64 3000+ and it runs surprisingly well. 20 - 30 fps with graphics maxed out to high and ultra where possible.

Unless they mean it needs dual core to run in vista?

A lot of people have reported the same problem using XP, too. So I don't think its OS-related.

Maybe it just doesn't like 32-bit CPUs, then.
