Inevitable really. Cheaper too if you consider all the addons you need to make the 360 as functional.

I bagged the ps3 when it first came out, and honestly figured the 360 to be the better console. I was surprised to see, when I finally got to play on one, the ps3 was actually a very well-designed console. The pads were light and I really liked the way you could charge them with a standard usb cable, without needing batteries. Plus the six-axis thing worked better than I thought it would. Of course, some of the games didn't run as well on the ps3 as the 360 (more of a developer issue I think) but it certainly didn't feel like something that'd been rushed out the door.

Also on Google PS3 has been much more popular than XBOX 360:

I'm thinking the boost is probably down to it's blue ray support. It's about the best blue ray player on the market, with full on multi-media support and ting.

The downside of course is that there's no fricking way I'd ever put one in my lounge because it looks like crap... likewise the xbox 360 looks like it was designed by the kind of person who thinks neon lights on the underside of a car look good.

I don't understand why they don't get someone who actually produces decently designed objects to get involved with these hunks of ugliness. Take a look at Cambridge audio, NAD, B&O etc etc, elegant and stylish objects, not this whole LOOK AT ME I'M A GAMES CONSOLE bullshit that we're contantly exposed to.

Create a games console that is a faceless box which can be dumped out of the way, then just have a bunch of different transports to suit your personal preferance. That way you don't have to have something that looks like it was designed by a 14 year olds younger brother... Or the Wii that was designed by his sister.

totally agree rob, with wireless support for controllers now common place, there's no reason your console shouldn't look any different to your dvd player, or you stereo seperate units. But then again, I don't care, and quite like different consoles looking different. It'd be weird if there all looked tha same.

It's not about wireless controllers so much, you could have wired controllers from the transport. Further more, if it was a dvd player for example it could act as a dvd player without having to boot up the whole console.

Companies would be in competition to produce better and more fully featured front end transports. For example, you could have an xbox and playstation that both use the same transport. And you wouldn't need to boot up either of them to watch a movie. It would be made by Cambridge Audio so it'll look fantastic and not be out of place with all the rest of your hifi, or nice lcd tele.

And further more, the console would come with it's default 14 yr old boy designed plastic-crap-oooh-look-at-the-shiny-lights design so you would get the initial distiction.

Sony isn't making my DVD player stand on end, nor are they doing that to my stereo head unity or amp... My cable company hasn't rounded the corners of my cable box yet...

These aerodynamic, non-stackable, and certainly intrusive designs make me want to hide it in a cabinet....

They aren't designed to be stackable- they have to get rid of heat somehow. By making them oddly shaped they somewhat prevent stupid people from stacking things on top of them, or shoving things up against their airflow areas.

I think they all look like crap. I agree with rob, it should be in tone with the rest of the stuff people want to put in living rooms. The wii's not so bad because its small and unobtrusive but would look better in black or metalic.

You know you can buy a black wii, right?

I think the rest of the consoles look fine. Most of their target market are kiddies, so they're well designed to appeal to them.

With proper design it can be directed out the back. That is not the issue.

If an ultra small form factor hi performance PC can be stackable/closed in (and often are) then im sure an ps3/xbox could on top of your video.

The PS3 was always going to do well if bluray one. I'd even consider one if I had a HDTV. I'm going to hold out for a bluray 360 since it has the best games outside of the PC.

the youtube vid seemed a tad outdated (esp re the backwards compatibility as that kept on getting dropped iir)

and the 360 psu being an external brick instead of an internal like the ps3 ... well if it keeps the heat of the psu out thats a good thing in my books
and if it were to blow whats easier to fix? an internal psu or buying a new external

bluray was a given bonus that microsoft decided not to indulge in in either camp (well out of the box anyhows)
but untill prices of any hd movies come down to the prices im willing to pay for movies its very moot

one game was alleged to be reduced in size to fit a normal dvd from the planned ps3 exclusive blu ray filling size ffs how big are they expecting to make these games now?

I don't really understand why people buy movies, watch them once and theres rearly much point to watch them again. Only ones I bought were the LOTR special editions with 4+ dvd's full of extras.

Here in the US at least, you can rent bluray disks 3 at a time for $15 a month, which if you watch a few can easily equal less than a 1$ each.

i pay on average £5 per dvd when getting them in one multibuy sale or another so its only a tad more than renting
pay once watch once (rental and cinema)

i know what i prefer

re cinema ive an unlimited card but ive been too busy with work to make it value for money but iir the going rate is £6 yet when its out dvd it wont be long till its that price again

but to pay £25+ for an old movie on blu ray or hd dvd get real
the same movie on dvd is probably reduced to clear
and when its a new movie with tripple format release the dvd is going to be cheap as in 3 months by being in the 5 for £30 sale i love spending my monthly wages on

i think i got planet of the apes box set for £10 (£2 a movie) when i got it
i dont recall cos i spent alot on my card in hmv getting box sets so which was £10 and which wasnt im a bit vague on
