Whats the worst game you've ever played?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Whats the worst game you've ever played?
I've seen several topics asking what peoples favoriote
video games were, so I thought it would be fun to post
the opposite.
what is the worst game you've ever played?
Mine would have to be Airs Adventure.
A Japanese only game, for the Sega Saturn.
The game is a 'VERY' long rpg, starring Air, who resembles
Michael Jackson in appearance.
It uses the most basic of turn based combat systems,
where all you really need to do, is hit the attack button
every time that it's your turn.
The story is dumb, the random encounters are annoying
and pointless, the Dungeons are almost completly one
way, with the occasional branching path that lets you go
a few feet in a different direction to get a treasure chest,
And the music is annoying.
The highlight of the game, was a single movie scene that
was just 'Okay'.
Look forward to hearing your worst gaming experience,
The Mighty WERDNA(Lord of Air)
Auf Wiedersehen Pet on the Amstrad CPC! :D
Loved the TV series though! ;)
Strangely enough I tend not to remember the bad ones. Maybe Soulbringer for the PC - it wasn't "technically" the worst, but it was utterly soul destroying to be assigned to the QA team that had to test it.
Bleakest time of my working life, that was.
So, yeah, Soulbringer - may it rot in silicon hell alongside those responsible for it being greenlit in the first place and also certain rampaging egos who were in love with their own game making "expertise".
When you work as a reviewer, you get to play some truly dire games, and they tend not to stick with you, for the sake of your sanity. Men in Black was pretty ghastly. I also had the (dis)pleasure of playing a game called The Lost Crown recently, which had some of the worst diaog, worst voice acting and worst interface of any adventure game I've ever played. And that's coming from someone who puts up with and even enjoys a lot of mediocre adventure games. I'd say avoid it, but chances are you'll never even see it unless you really go looking for it.

Yargh! Another one that I had to test! Albeit only briefly, thankfully.

Based on your recommendation I just checked out the game's website. It describes the game as abeing inspired by "the haunting works of Charles Dickens, M.R. James, Arthur Conan Doyle, and E.F. Benson"! JustAdventure+, a well know bastion of good taste and reliable adventure game reviews (ahem), claims that The Lost Crown "...may actually go down in history as the best horror adventure game ever written...Seriously."
How can it not be good?
Over many years of game playing, I have come across many stinkers. In no particular order, I present my List Of The Really Awful Games That Shouldn't Have Been Made :
Elite - couldn't stand the game
Tomb Raider - played a demo on a PS1, and have ignored it ever since
Silent Hunter 3 - booorrrrrriiiinnnnggggg
The Human Race - The C64's hardest game (possibly aside from Army Moves - which I never played)
Gears Of War - Irritatingly repetitive. A Microsoft Live bug makes me lose my current save position at the beginning of the year. Haven't played it since.
True Crime - Awful
Along with JustLuke's recollection of Soulbringer (which I also worked on), Fatal Racing was probably among the worst games I've ever played. Also, Rise of the Robots.
Rise of the robots
Pit Fighter

So in your universe Elite shouldn't have been made? Heresy!
Silent Hunter 3 - booorrrrrriiiinnnnggggg
And that's just missing the point!
Pong.
Any arcade game with those guns (Area 51, Time Crisis, Jurassic Park). I suck at them and they're boring.
And yet I love Duck Hunt... hmmm...
Oh and E.T for the Atari. That game was so weird.
I remember thinking Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles on the Amiga was *especially* bad mainly because the framerate was only a few frames per second which was totally horrible.
bejewelled and diablo - addictive but CRAP
spacehulk - truly thought to myself, what were they thinking?
It became a coaster within a week
Yar's Revenge
bejeweled and diablo - addictive but CRAP
Hmm.. I liked Diablo 2, but not the first one, I also like Bejeweled 2.. on my palm :)
The worst game I've seen is probably Runescape.
Another vote for Rise Of The Robots.
Rise of the Robots wasn't that bad... people who hate it only do so because they didn't play Dangerous Streets on the CD32. My goodness, that game was pure evil.
And that's just missing the point!
Quoted for agreement. I just went and bought Dangerous Waters off Steam. It has a 550 page manual which teaches you every aspect of a sub. If you thought SH3 was boring... don't go anywhere near Dangerous Waters. For those who actually learn about that kind of game though... hardcore sub sims rock.
Most of the games listed in this thread aren't bad at all. What's wrong with you people? :P
Think for me its gotta be DaiKatana and HeavyMetal those games were pap..
Horrible Control responce lame and pore plots I spent more time configing control than playing
I currently use these as buffers for my games libary they fill the Left and Right recess on the Top shelf
Probably Doom3, in that it made me physically nauscious for an hour thanks to the motion sickness it induced after playing it for five minutes. I didn't even make it past the initial tutorial level before I had to give up.
/not a big FPS fan
//Except the Descent series, for some reason that one never bothered me
As far as just being plain bad/boring, I guess my vote would be for "Captain Blood" and "Bard's Tale" on the Amiga.
i never understood captain blood
id land try and have a convo give up after they made little to no sence and just bombed the planet and headed to a random one for more of the same
i think my goal became total eradication of the star map ;)
Captain Blood was one of the best games ever... and while Bard's Tale didn't exactly do it for me back then, it was an absolute classic.
Rise of the Robots wasn't that bad
The previews boasted that the artificial intelligence learned what sequences of moves you used, and adapted to block them.
So I guess the AI opponents must have just liked standing in a corner getting repeatedly kicked in the face, then.
It was spectacularly bad and that's that. Anybody who says different, smells of wee.
I agree it didn't live up to many of its claims, but if you'd played Dangerous Streets you'd be on your knees singing its praises... that I promise you.
- Centipede
- Llamatron
So in your universe Elite shouldn't have been made? Heresy!
Yes.
I just went and bought Dangerous Waters off Steam.
You poor chap.
And that's just missing the point!
Even the multiplayer isn't much good - goes nowhere, does nothing.
Not terribly keen on UT3 either. Doom 3 was just about tolerable - it goes downhill after the first boss.
You poor chap.
You may refer to me as "Master Sub Commander".
...goes nowhere, does nothing.
It does nothing? Wow, that must've been a hard one to get by the testing team.
You may refer to me as "Master Sub Commander".
Heh - I think the link below is more what MrToad was hoping for in SH3.

No at all - there are many games that are simply awful. If there weren't then the initial post wouldn't be needed.
You didn't say bad... you said it did nothing, as if when someone clicked on the multiplayer button nothing at all happened.
Elite - couldn't stand the game
Burn them heresy.
I vote Rise of the Robots, that was hype at its best. Had it on the Amiga for two hours (and that includes the bus ride to and from the computer shop, twice one to get home and the other to take it back). It was the WORST game I ever played, the only people who said it was any good was the people that worked on it.
Anything by Jeff Minter - a million swirly particles and neon overload does not a game make.
Drug addled, lama-obsesses hippy - that's all he is.
... Who's made a living creating computer games that HE wants to make... Jealous?
I don't think personal attacks on Minter are a good idea due to the last bout of it caused bannings.
Nope, not at all. Been there, done that. The games industry sucks.
Edit: Yes, you're right. I take it all back. Actually, I've never met the guy. The latter two points were simply observations based on his games and his appearance. The former was based on rumour and speculation and entirely without factual basis.
So, then, to clarify, old man Minter is definately:
Not drug-addled.
Not lama-obsessed.
Not a hippy.
Not a bit scruffy looking.
Sorry, I don't know where that last one came from.
yeah llamatron, i played that for about 2 minutes then didnt bother putting the disc in again
His whole career and reputation relies on nostalgia for games that were either (a) never any good in the first place or (b) "enhancements" of other people's games.
That sounds like 95% of indie games.
too many to remember over the years.
agree about rise of the robots (i bought into the hype of that one).
surprised no one mentioned bio forge, roughly around the same time as rise of the robots if memory serves me right.
many others that money has been wasted on over the years, but those two stick out the most for me.
i'm sure i'll waste even more money over the coming years lol.
oohhh another one i just thought of, dungeon lords. good idea/concept, but unfinnished piece of crap. don't know if they ever got it all fixed up and don't care.
You didn't say bad... you said it did nothing, as if when someone clicked on the multiplayer button nothing at all happened.
I meant it was devoid of gameplay. An empty shell. Nothingness. A black hole. Of no interest. No redeeming features.
From what I can see the guys over at Subsim.com disagree with it being devoid of gameplay. Of no interest... well, that's your choice I guess.
That sounds like 95% of indie games.
Which just so happens to be roughly the percentage of awful indie games.
That sounds like 95% of indie games.
Well, Sturgeon's law does state that 90% of everything is crap, so...
As for Dangerous Streets being worse than Rise Of The Robots. Could the character turn around and face the other direction in Dangerous Streets? Yes? Rise Of The Robots wins. Flawless victory. One jumping side kick, then just jump over your opponent, and wait for the timer to expire.
Also, Championship Manager is up there, except it hardly qualifies as a game, so much as a spreadsheet.
Rise of the Robots.... And also that CD32 thing where you where flying through a human being, basically a pap shooter with rendered animated backgrounds from memory.
Was Rise of the Robots Team 17?? I can remember trying to get Roadkill published on the Amiga and getting a memo back from T17 saying they wanted its gameplay to be more like some awful isometric car game they had.
Can't really blame Martyn Brown at the end of the day though. The Amiga was really hitting its death throes when Roadkill was self published.
Runescape is horrible. but i have to say i disliked the game Rhem's incredibly complex world designs. Its hard enough to solve the puzzles.
I had the joy of playing "52Action!" on the NES as a wee lad.
And also that CD32 thing where you where flying through a human being, basically a pap shooter with rendered animated backgrounds from memory
Microcosm
Hehe... I liked Microcosm. The music on the CD32 was cool :D
Was Rise of the Robots Team 17??
No. Time/Warner interactive IIRC.
Can't really blame Martyn Brown at the end of the day though. The Amiga was really hitting its death throes when Roadkill was self published.
Sure you can. The main difference being that Roadkill was awesome, and Team 17 games were largely horrible, and well deserving of being on a list like that. I mean Full Contact? Alien Breed 3D II? Worms? What the hell were they thinking?
oh yeah put 98% of all spectrum 48K games on that list too.
Alien Breed 3D 2 wasn't that great, but number 1 was actually pretty enjoyable. Other Team 17 games like Assassin and Superfrog were also fun. One of their latest PC space titles was amazingly horrible though...
Roadkill rocked, big time ;)
Back in the days when upgrading your stock Amiga just for a game was a ridiculous and expensive exercise, Alien Breed 3D stank since it would only run fast enough to be playable in a window the size of a postage stamp.
@Flameduck
Your right, I could blame him for a lack of good 'gaming taste' but I was being nice.
I think the car game was called ATV or something like that (I probably still have the scanned fax on my amiga UAE partition).
And the car game was shocking!!, no drift, nothing.... I'm glad someone else thinks T17 games where naff... I always did.
Actually thinking about makes me remember about how riled we all where about Mr Brown's somewhat patronising response...
Fun days..
GfK, didn't you have a 1200?
Yep - iirc, Alien Breed 3D didn't work on anything less than a standard A1200. My A1200 had a standard 68020 and 6MB RAM which was still utterly incapable of running AB3D.
I guess thats why they did a deal with Blizzard so people could get a 68030 cheaper, but even that wasn't fast enough.
"Blood flies faster in a Blizzard", as they used to say (but not much faster).
AB3D ran fine for me... it was AB3D 2 which chunked. Are you sue you're not thinking of that?
Nope, they were both bad. But yeah, AB3DII was worse.
Odd... I must have been running it low-res or something. I had quite a bit of fun with it, back in the day. Of course, Gloom was just as enjoyable...
I always felt bad about this...but my parents were kind enough to buy me two SNES games back when I was a kid for christmas : Cliffhanger, and some other game that I can't remember. And getting TWO games was a big deal at the time for my family since money was always an issue. Both games were already cheap, around $30 each by then.
Both games were so ridiculously crappy that I threw a spoiled child tantrum and made them return the games and get me Donky Kong Country. Yes, if i recall correctly, they were the two worst games ever...
Damm....the bad thing was that they were hoping that I'd be happy with the two games...I still remember the look on their faces...
I never really thought about it until my dad died a year later from cancer. And I never forgot my stupid childhood tantrums since. I'm going to burn in hell for this....:p
I remember when Cliffhanger was reviewed for the Amiga. The guy reviewing said anyone who saw the box for sale should stab it with knives :)
The only game I ever took back was McDonald's Land. I found it to be a great platformer, but the main character got changed from a cool looking kid (see here-
http://hol.abime.net/2429) in the demo, to a glasses wearing nerd in the full version. To this day, I still have no idea why! I really couldn't stand looking at these two goofy nerd characters, so I took it back to the shop.
Battlecruiser 3000AD
And to think the game spawned 2 to 12 sequels (depending on what you count as a sequel ;)) and another one is on its way.
Hello.
Larn...Ummm
Goodbye.
Advent Rising (recently)
I guess it was designed for a gamepad, but this was not made clear in the specs (or maybe I missed it).
After swearing at my character for the umpteenth time for holstering his weapon when under attack, I enabled god mode for the rest of the game and just started laughing at the storyline and characters.
And they had hoped to make a trilogy - someone was huffing glue.
Final fantasy crystal chronicals
The 'Lost' game. I'm still trying to recover :(
I find "World In Conflict" pretty bad. It's system requirements are much too steep for what it offers, the gameplay is pretty limited, storyline is fine but the execution is ultra boring.
I never really thought about it until my dad died a year later from cancer. And I never forgot my stupid childhood tantrums since. I'm going to burn in hell for this....:p
yah I had some bad ones too. :D
Id have to say Waverace for the ps2
So stupidly boring
I never really thought about it until my dad died a year later from cancer. And I never forgot my stupid childhood tantrums since. I'm going to burn in hell for this....:p
Man - guilt trip!
You know - I'm sure he had other things on his mind than your childhood tantrums. Looking back, it's easy for a child to think his behavior was somehow a catalyst for life's general suckiness.
My vote:
'Attack of the Phantom Karate Devils, The'
http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/games/details.php%3FID%3D3576>And to think the game spawned 2 to 12 sequels (depending on what you count

So did this:
Don't believe im typing this.
Masters of the universe.
Thats enough i think.
id watch the masters of the univers movie again just for meg evil lynn foster :)
Don't remember bad games so much as I remember bad game sequels. To this extent, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, Generals and Dungeon Keeper 3 are my top three.
There's simply no excuse for the way Dungeon Keeper 3 turned out.
EDIT : Clever chappies, you lot are. I stand by my quoted comment =] There's just no excuse for it whatsoever.
EDIT 2 : Kingdom Hearts 2 and FFX-2 make my top five...
dk3 i thought that got shelved
i did write up a bit of a gripe on dk1&2 but my connection decided to pants just as i hit post so it never materialized and i lost the copy
but that game dissapointed me by it being no where near what i was expecting in a 'run your own dungeon' kinda game
enjoyable but repetative ... i think i spent more time on dk2 than 1 but in the end it was no startopia
Hotcakes wrote:

What... you mean cancelled? Dungeon Keeper 3 was never released.
They made some concept art but that was it.
I actually liked most of Jeff Minter's games and remember playing Llamatron and Revenge/Camels for quite some time. I disliked Worms more than Llamatron, actually.
Worms was... ok. I don't dislike the game but I don't understand its appeal either. The series really took a turn for the worse when it switched from 2d to 3d.
Llamatron sucked but I'm not surprised that you like Minter's games - you're a bit of a "magical thinker", if I recall some of your past topics correctly, right?
i had a demo of worms 3d that crashed on me big time at the menu so i never played it again
thing is it left the sound card with a loop that i dictaphoned (if i had my SD 4track then and the right leads id have plugged it into the headphones socket for better quality) it was the kinda sound that would work as an intro to a live gig for white noise type stuff :)
i was used to the old ballistics type of games from the speccy days but worms blagged me the timer ran out before i knew what i was doing and with what
best bit about it is (like hogs of war) the voices were wavs and my brother sent us a couple of speaches he had made with em
Top 10 bloody awful games:
Perimiter
Unreal Tournament 2003 (Worst ever sequal)
Toca Race Driver 2
Thingie and the Doodahs (Spec) (My brother passed over Head over Heels for this pile of poop), fortunatly I was able to buy HH at a later date.
Joust (WTF is that doing on Live!?) (Spec)
Army Moves (Spec)
Times of Lore (ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!) (Spec)
Gauntlet 3D
Daikitana
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (2nd Worst ever sequal)
I find it hard to believe anyone who has played GoW put it in their worst list but everyone is different.
I think Captain Blood is probably one of the most frustrating games ever particularly the crash prone Speccy version.
I found
this which is quite funny and features John's Sticky Balls.
Darkheart
Um, well I liked LLamatron at the time partly because it was quite wacky and also because I lived only a mile from Jeff Minter, so that made it somehow more special. There are definitely better 2d arena games available now, however. I liked some of the social/cultural content in Jeff's games and the way he made fun of a few things, especially in Mutant Camels. I like a game that doesn't take itself too seriously.
I disliked just about any 3D game on the Amiga because 3D was just too slow to be fun, with the exception of a few fake-3d racing games.
I think I can't remember all the games I disliked as much as the ones I liked cus I erased them from my memory as quickly as possible ;-D
Perimiter
I remember this game, it made me think, "wtf"
Mindwalker.
Totally, utterly incomprehensible.
Final Fantasy 10
Installed, played 20 mins, got pissed by only beeing in FMV, uninstalled and sold it.
I don't pay 100$ to watch movies only.
A game that does not catch your attention in the first 60 mins (normally its said 10 - 30 mins, right?) just isn't worth it.
Nobody has mentioned footy management games, which I used to play a lot... But the worst one I ever, ever played was called Onside Soccer.
You couldnt score outside the box, even if the defenders where prositutes and your players shorts were made out of £50 notes.... It was impossible.
Yet, keep the ball at your feet and walk it into the net, you could win a game 10-0 doing that! :)
Another thing about it, is that you could charge £1 for entry into the game, fill the ground up, then pump it up to £100 the next game and you would make a fortune, as the attendance would only drop a couple of percent. Honestly, I had more money than roman abramovich! :)
Utter cack, it was!
Llamatron made my face bleed.
(actually, I think that was caused by me sticking pins in my own eyes to get out of playing it)
all of Minter's games were rubbish, IMHO. But Llamatron was by far the worst.
DISCLAIMER: There were other rubbish games, made by people who were not Mr Minter.
I always found some of Minter's games exceptionally well calibrated, gameplay wise. Llamatron 2112 was made so well that for each game you would be able to get just some stages further without being frustrating (something which I miss, for example, in Bullet Candy). People who can't stand robotron styled gameplay or psichedelic effects shouldn't play such games in the first place. As far as robotron style games work, it was excellent. I think it's more a matter of personal preference than objective quality.
i never understood captain blood
id land try and have a convo give up after they made little to no sence and just bombed the planet and headed to a random one for more of the same
i think my goal became total eradication of the star map ;)
Captain Blood was certainly dispervise, but very interesting (the iconic language for starters). It's also a major problem of other games of its era: without a guide or a manual you are completely lost. Commander Blood, its sequel, on the other hand takes out the free roaming and introduces hanson-like characters: a brilliant and whacky game.
An easy list can be made for movie tie-ins which re-tell the same story, which are always acceptable at their best: from the ET game (even the developer was ashamed of it) to the latest one, the PC port of Iron Man (the 360 version is mediocre, but the PC version is a straight port from the PS2 version and the graphics alone
as you can see would be considered sub par for a 1998 game... let's not talk about the rest). The Exception could be The Chronicles of Riddick, which is totally brilliant in every respect - plot, screenplay, acting, graphics, and gameplay - but which is also not based on the movie plotline.
Bad Boys the Game
Superman 64
50 Cent: Bulletproof
E.T.
Spy Fiction (PS2)
50 Cent: Bulletproof
I only have to see the name to realise how crappy that would be lol.
The worst game I played was 3 month old thread?
Mindwalker.
Good book, crap game
Just spotted this thread....
You all think those are bad games eh?
You kids dont know how lucky youve been..
Try BMX Racers on the C-64.
The game was so bad, that the programmer did not expect you to play past about the third level, and the track would slowly become littered with ASCII drivel from the portion of memory the program was scrolling into.
The music was a one channel 10 second loop of absolute rubbish aswell.
Youve really got to see this game to believe it. I know it was only £1.99 (Mastertronic label I believe), but you would still have had more fun setting 2 one pound notes on fire and putting them under your eyelids.
gotta be SPORE
Why would anyone want to remember the worst game they ever played?
Are there any good games on the market, I bought Crysis a few years ago, and it was OK, but since then I've not heard of any good game (visually good).
hm... runescape
Mindless leveling is not my idea of fun.
