Looks like I finaly have a reason to justify buying a Xbox 360 :). Netflix offers Bluray rentals at no extra cost, and I'm not interested in PS3 but liked a lot of original Xbox games. So I'm looking forward to a new Bluray 360.

XBox 360 + downward emulation is glitchy and as even games like fable (and the expansion version) and the like are having issues with visuals etc, I don't consider it beeing worth the effort.
As for the BlueRay: yeah its nice ... but the price will raise again for those versions by 100USD+

Thats not really much of a problem, even if you don't already have an old one. They should be cheap to find.

For some that is a justifiable price.
I can rent bluray disks for less than $1 each, and I want to play some of the sequels to Xbox games like Fable 2, bioware RPG's and not have to wait 6+ months for them to come out on PC. Forza, and PGR etc.
I was considering getting a PS3 when I move, because of the blu-ray... But I would actually prefer an XBox360, so this is good news, for me!

Not sure, potentially they will retry it in Japan with the Blueray support and push it to March / June in the rest of the world.
Last time I owned a console, it was a Colecovision. Waiting another year is not a problem. By that time, I might have a Bluray burner in the PC.
Damn now I really have no reason for my PS3 ... well maybe Metal Gear ...

Thanks for posting this, it's been denied so many times I'd given up all hope of ever seeing it even though it made sense. I was even thinking of buying a PS3, I'm glad MS have finally seen the light. They are going to sell an add-on version for existing users, right...?
Of course this could turn out to be another wild goose chase, it's been confirmed and denied so many times.

buggered if im gonna pay for an external drive like the hddvd one but as games arnt on bluray for the xbox i could just skip that as i am still happy with dvd
well if they integrate it they definitely will offer an external as well for previous owner. And lets face the truth: an external can't be louder than the XBox 360 HDMI integrated disc driver ...

shouldn't take too lang till PS4 as Sony's CEO thought loud about PS5 already a year ago ... I would guess the PS3 will be replaced 3 years after its launch by the PS4 with better technology, especially less costly CELL etc ... and hopefully an acceptable design, not an ugly nonstackable breadbox

I have a PS3 and no games for it, I watch movies on it so that it gets used for something other than a door stop. It sounded impressive on paper back when Sony hyped it too. That video did nothing more. Playing is believing.
I would buy a PS3 just for watching Bluray movies, and other codecs movies from the internet. Also normal DVD movies look much better on it, than on a regular DVD player, since it has some intelligent scaling and image enchancement system. Well, I might also try to write some OpenGL games for Linux with it, that's also not possible on the XBOX360 since it has no Linux, no nVidia card. The good games like Delta Force, WoW, Stalker, Crysis are on PC only.
heh I guess we are back to wait and see. I expect they will in the end, just a matter of time. I'm not sure they could secure a reasonable price from sony for the drive units right now though. I guess it depends on how they prioritise their business in movie sales or the success of their game system.
Bluray is about the only thing that seperates the two consoles appart from half a dozen first party games.
Right, the Xbox 360 does not have Linux, it "only" has C# and XNA freely available while Linux for the PS3 does not even give you full access to the graphics hardware but only to the framebuffer.
Then the Cell CPU does not just have one core that is never used, it's more likely that around six of the cores are never used in a real game, because there's almost nothing to parallelize in traditional game programming. Read up Tim Sweeney's explanation for this, or google for John Carmack's anecdotes. If you want evidence, just launch Half-Life 2 and the task manager on a multi-core PC and be amazed that all except for one CPU core are IDLE.
It were the marketing departments that made the decision for multi-core architectures in consoles, not the developers, as Mr Sweeney said.
Crysis and STALKER were the two greatest disappointments in the last two years. STALKER did not deliver on any of its promises and Crysis was an extremely lame remake of FarCry with slightly enhanced graphics.
The Darkness, Bioshock and Gears of War were much better titles, and they were all available for the Xbox 360. And the trend is that most titles initially are exclusively available for a console for 6-12 months before the PC version is shipped. The only thing the PS3 has currently going for it in the game department is Unreal Tournament 3 (but not for long anymore). I'll buy her when she's got more exclusive titles that --I-- want to play. Until that happens, I only need one console.
BluRay is about as obsolete as Windows Vista. People -will- buy movie downloads, and Microsoft already supports DivX & Co -and- has an online store. You can even plugin your iPod Video to the Xbox 360 and you can use it to stream media from your Mac or PC. Now it would make much more sense to give the customers a way to archive their legal downloads instead of giving them access to another obsolete read-only carrier medium.
Not everyone has a super fast net connection. I am lucky to get 150kb/s and would much rather use a postal rental service with online queing than a download service streaming or otherwise. I spend $15 a month on internet and have only broadcast TV, as do millions of others.
I'll probably upgrade my TV and buy a BluRay 360 together in good time for when they drop broadcast tv and go exclusively digital in a few months time. Can rent games and bluray vids legaly for a fraction of the price of the download versions, get a much broader selection, and better quality than downloading videos illegaly off the web and risking a nasty phonecall from my ISP, or worse.
I for one do like the PS3 for regular DVD's too because the scaling is amazing. Regular DVD's have never looked so sharp. Also, on the downloadable movie thing, I've done it and it sucks to download an HD movie for the 360. Unless you're there for 5 hours to babysit it you won't get the whole movie downloaded in under 3 days. It's much quicker to hit blockbuster. I give it another few years before all downloadable content really takes off.

Yep. Most people just don't have the kind of connection speeds for large downloads yet.
Once all the lower end providers get gobbled up by the larger providers, and once everyone moves to fiber, it should be reasonable.

IT is abit too late bring out XBOX Blu-ray!
There is one things that stick to my mind is that some games doesnt ever fill the blu-ray Disc!
From it's conception, the DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) was able to do from 8cm single side single layer 1.5GB, up to the 12cm dual layer dual side 17GB. currently, some big games are in dual layer single side. I don't think anyone yet fully utilized the potential 17 gigs of the disc capacity.
I'd be foolish to think that games that come out on the PS3 are on Bluray. They probably all come out on DVD format anyway.
