For those with GTA 4 freezing problems

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/For those with GTA 4 freezing problems

Just been playing away some more, not done ANY missions yet :o) However, upon loading the console up, with the only save point being after the cutscene when you get to the safehouse, it freezes during loading.

I restarted five or six times. Still freezes (Ridiculas start up time on the PS3 btw). The only thing that fixed the problem was to pull the ethernet cable out the back. It must have hung upon checking online something or other. So, watch out and i hope that helps someone else.

I only had the freezing once during a chase job. Hasn't happened again but yesterday when I went to load my game it just hung at the load screen. The solution (same as yours) was to disconnect from the internet - tried again and it worked no problem. Either the telemetrics are interfering with the load sequence or something else is happening.

We do get a long start up time but that's because it's made up for with almost non-existent load times. The 360 doesn't install any data. I quite like the start up screensaver part, it gets me ready and into the world.

Yeah, i suppose. It still is a bit long. I'm probably just making it longer for myself because of the annoying freezing when loading thing.

not seen a single freeze yet on the EUR XBox 360 version of it and I mainly played the story so far (about 8 - 10 hours, am now in this damned mission where you have to get back the crack and have to clean a industry building + lots of cops afterwards)

same here, been playing quite a few hours on the UK 360 version with no problems. (except one glitch when I went into the subway and it clipped all the 3D from the subway so I couldn't see anything at all).

I've still yet to see this thing on sale where I live - makes me wonder if they are printing new CD/disk things - ie a corrected version.

Here is something more official regarding PS3 freezing:
Please run through the following, go through in order.

1) Delete the game's install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the game's install information.

2) Delete the game's save files. To delete any save files you will need to do the following. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Save Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, and from the context menu select Delete.

3) Disable your Internet connectivity for the PS3. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Settings' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Network Settings'. Now scroll down to the Internet connection option and press x, now select the disable option. Once this has been done unplug the ethernet cable if you are connecting to the Internet if using this.

4) Disable the console's information board. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Information Board', highlight this and press triangle. From the menu select 'Do not display' Press X to confirm this.

5) Disable Media Server functionality. Scroll to Settings, now scroll up / down to 'Network Settings' select Media Server connection. Once this has been done press triangle and change the option Disabled.

6) Delete all of the system's Internet cache. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Internet Browser', highlight this and press X. Once you browser opens press the triangle button once, from the new menu highlight the 'Tools' option and press X. Scroll down the menu until you reach 'Delete Cookies' and press X. Confirm the files deletion. Repeat this for 'Delete Cache'.

7 ) Turn off the PS3 screen saver. Use the cross media bar to scroll to 'Settings', select 'Display Settings'. Now highlight 'Screensaver' and set this to 'Do not use'.

8 ) Once this has been done, manually restart you PS3 by holding down the power button for 5 seconds it will beep once and then shut down. Release the power button and re-press it and hold for about 5 seconds. The system will then boot and reset all display settings. You will be prompted to reset your display settings to how you require them.

9) Once restarted please try the game again, you will be prompted to reinstall.

Once the game has started please turn off the following features:

1) The game's auto-save. Press Start, Game, and locate the Auto-save option. Turn this off.

2) Turn off the game's flicker filter. Press Start, Display and locate the Flicker Filter option. Turn this off.

3) Turn off the controller vibration feature. Press Start, Controls and locate the vibration option. Turn this off.

If that doesn't solve the problem, Take-Two allows tech support users to reopen their cases within seven days.

I heard that it takes a good 10 mins to install initialy, but then loading times are faster than the 360 which doesn't use a large HD cache like the PS3 version.

Good to see that consoles are finally descending to the PCs standards of bugs, freezes, obscure settings fixes for crashing and hugely long install times.

Wonder how long it will be before the standard console advice upon a crash is to reboot and reinstall...oh, seems like we're already there.

US PS3 version here, no freezing yet.

Puki, i know it's not your advice, but i think it's bad advice. Surely you should try unplugging the internet BEFORE deleting your save file? Always choose the least destructive option first!

That sequence posted by Puki to fix freezing is beyond acceptable
By the time you get through the instructions GTA 5 will be here(!)

Along the lines of Vordermans comments ..

Console owners, welcome to PC gaming land (and you're welcome to it)

Well, they should be realising a patch for this double quick...

LOL!

Meh,I just got this game, and i am taking it back tomorrow. i bought it purely to see what the buzz is about.

and seriously? What the hell? it's blurry, low resolution and runs like crap. I will swap it for Wii fit and wait for the PC version to cmoe out, hopefully then we will get the choice to render it at a higher resolution than what seems like 320x240!!!

AND.. those shadows? What gievs? they are flickery as hell, almost gave me a bloody epipeptic fit.

SO, just what about this game was supposed to be mind blowing?

Patching, crashes, freezes, hardware that lasts 6 months if you're lucky before dying, long install times....

Having owned a PS2 for what must be 10 years now I was seriously considering getting a 360 just for GTA4 and Burnout Whateveritscalled, but I've realised that there is just no point. Even given that the warranty is now longer (3 years I think now?) it seems I would be buying an item that I *can* expect to be dead and worthless shortly after 3 years, and it has most of the problems that PC games used to have but without the benefit of mods, keyboard+mouse combo controls, and all the free stuff like the indie games and shareware etc...

I think I'm better off waiting until the inevitable GTA4 PC release and then spending the £240 that I would have wasted on a 360 + GTA4 on a new graphics card + some more ram.

I really enjoyed my PS2, but I just can't see the point of the current crop of consoles - they seem to have lost all of their plus-sides against a PC, even in price terms. I built my current dual-core from scratch to play Crysis and it cost about £350 all in, minus the case. Only just more than a PS3, and it'll last a lot longer.

There's patch for the PS3 version oyut now, fixes freezing probs.

I think that's only in multiplayer mode, that fixes issues.
