I got it a couple of days ago. Visually it looks better than the previous version and also runs better although sometimes it fails to detect new apps trying to access the net. e.g. When I tried multiplayer Age of Empires - The conquerors I had to manually add a rule to the firewall because it wouldn't Auto detect it trying to access the net.

Other than that which is probably a one off AVG 8 is much better.

not updated mine for a while due to the fact it keeps lockin up vista, any one using version 8 on vista

i have to use v7.5.1.43 (spyware) as i know this doesnt freeze vista

Hopefully AVG 7.5 will stop bugging me about buying v8 once I get this installed...(they don't make it easy to find the free version!)

I'm a big fan of Nod32 myself. It works well even on my ageing system, and uses almost no resources other than ram. I havent found anything more dependable or less intrusive yet.

Actually, I'm using an secure operating system that does not require an anti-virus program.

AVG is free forever, NOD is free for 30 days(after that you could say it is quite expensive), too bad I'll stay with AVG.

NOD is far too expensive - it'd cost me £60 a year to keep it.
If you mean Linux, you're using an OS that isn't popular enough for anybody to be bothered writing viruses for.

Anyway, this thread is just a heads-up for people who might not know. I don't know why everything here has to turn into "my willy's bigger than yours". Seriously, do you guys go up to people in pubs and tell them that your drink is better than theirs?

I'm finding things I don't like about the new version.

First up, I don't like or want the thing that checks web pages in google search results and puts a lil icon beside each result, so I turned it off. Now, the AVG icon is constantly showing an exclamation mark to indicate that something is wrong. Nothing is wrong, I turned off a feature by choice! I don't want it to constantly tell me about it.

I get the same problem when I switch off daily updates. Once a week is enough and I just want a weekly reminder like in 7.5 - no way to do that, as far as I can tell.

Also, the "Did you know?" pane on the AVG UI. There's apparently no way to stop that popping up either.

It's all because most people are that thick they turn things off accidentilly and need constant reminder of what they did. They should bring out two versions :o)

Hmmm. haven't installed it yet, but from what Gfk says is enought to put me off.

Well, they're only minor niggles, to be fair. People don't like change.

Minor, but I'd probably find it annoying if it's sat there with an exclamation mark all day, don't like icons in the sys tray as it is, let alone angry ones.

If that's the case, you could just hid ethe icon, then you wouldn't have to worry about it.

£60 a year is expensive? Despite you having to pay almost twice what everyone else does, by what reckoning is £60 a year expensive? I spend 3 times as much on fuel. Every week! In fact I don't think there's anything at all I spend less than £60 a year on.

Yeah. A Windows version and a Linux version. Oh wait.

By the reckoning that my partner is three months pregnant and we have more important things we could be spending £60 on right now.

My main beef with AVG 7.5 is that it adds a good 20 seconds to my WinXP boot-up time as it forces itself on to auto-update in the middle of my screen, while my PC is simulataneously loading 50 other things at once (gross exaggeration), and then it proceeds to wait on *my* ok for it to close itself.
(which I wouldn't mind if it was a quick process, and didn't need my confirmation to close it considering I gave it the privelage to even auto-update to begin with. Having the auto-update run silently in the background would have been nice also)

That's why I wait a couple minutes before logging on to my account. It gives AVG some time to work.

I don't bother with virus software. I hate all that crap slowing my PC down.

Every so often I'll download something free and run a check but I've never found a virus. Not in recent years anyhow, there some nasty ones about a few years back.

Support for the current free version runs out at the end of May - whether V8 will also be free, I dont know.

I'm moving elsewhere for AV protection - its good, time for a change.

I use AVG, but I also have ThreatFire running as well. Anyone else?
