FORUM REQUEST: Option to hide email address

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/FORUM REQUEST: Option to hide email address

Hello.

Having just received a nasty abusive e-mail from this guy is there any possibility that BRL could respect my privacy and allow me to NOT have my e-mail address visible to all and sundry? If you insist that I must have an e-mail address in my profile then you should at least give me the option of hiding it from all but moderators.

Surely it wouldn't be a massive job to add this feature to our profile?

I agree would be a very nice feature to have, and is available on most other forums.

Doesn't NZ have an equivalent of the Data Protection Act?

You don't have to put your email in your profile, gfk. Just don't forget your password.

http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/email_info.php

Just talking about it to somebody on IRC. You have to put *something* in there. If you leave it blank it insists that you enter an e-mail address, yet it apparently does no checking whatsoever to make sure that you've typed an actual address.

Problems is mate, he's already got your email address. But it would be a good idea.

You don't have to put your email in your profile, gfk. Just don't forget your password.
What happens if you forget your password? Please implement.

That's easy, just email BRL when you need to.

If you have no email in your account, how do they know it came from you and not someone else fishing for account pws?

It never used to be mandatory to put an email ID in your profile. However, that has changed. Now, if you need to make any changes to your profile (e.g. password or sig change) it forces you to populate the email ID field.

I suppose you have to provide some extra details to convince them, as much as you can find, like your full name, and address, products you've bought, your account nickname, that out to be enough.

Let's see the email.

Let's see the email.
Then I'd be as bad as he is.

true
but if it relates to the locked 3dsmax thread then letting the 'authorities' ie brl see said mail as from what i read of the thread it seemed more like you were taking the mick out of xylvian more than this other guys legitimacy

what if your not the only one hes contacted due to that thread

"Azaratur"?

Mmm. I didn't think he was abusive.

He's Italian though - so may not be able to say things in English without them being out of context.

It would be nice to have the option to hide the email address...

One of the nice things of having your own domain is that I can just create umpteen unique email addresses, and use them for specific purposes. The advantage of that it that your 'real' address doesn't get exposed and never receives any spam, and if any of the secondary addresses becomes the target of spam it's easy to drop it and pull out a new one.

Of course: an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

I also would like a private messaging system. I started a thread about this months ago and lot of guys from the community wanted it too but staff just ignored it I think.

Having just received a nasty abusive e-mail from this guy
WTF for? You are one of the nicest and most helpful people on the forums.

WTF for?
WTF difference does it make? I don't think hiding e-mail addresses from non-moderator forum users (like puki) is the least bit unreasonable. Add Mortiis PM system, and there is no longer any valid reason not to.

I support both ideas.

Duffer,
I would guess it's something to do with this thread...

Darkheart

I agree with Darkheart...non members shouldnt be able to see email of registered users..

Non-members can't see your e-mail address anyway.

I wonder if Rob Farley got an e-mail from him as well?

what that guy want from you so desperately, GfK??

I wonder if Rob Farley got an e-mail from him as well?
No idea, I delete most emails from strangers without opening them.

hmmm, supposed you could email BRL with this (like you preach others do in other situations) or you can come on here and whine about it (like you did) to add fuel to the fire as it were.

8 some odd years ago Amon and I got into it where he signed my email up for a few pr0n sites (after sending me some nasty emails first mind you). I just changed my email address to "REMOVED" (along with a few other vars in there, I think the website is still removed). Even though it didn't prevent him, it prevented any future issues. A few months later I changed it back to my email address as I was releasing some software...

Although (before he comes in to defend himself) I am not implying that I was completely innocent, I had my fair share of backlash on him as well. Since then we have both moved passed this (at least I hope.... He probably still has my name on one of his "before I die" lists ;-)

WTF for? You are one of the nicest and most helpful people on the forums.

HAHahaha, yeah Noel and Halo were both huge contributors to the Blitz era of software however that doesn't excuse someone for having to take responsibility for what they say and who they may offend in a temper tantrum.

Bottom line is if your a jerk-off to someone than no amount of free stuff you hand out will make them respect you. And as far as free stuff, if your just giving it away to gain fame and respect, then by all means be surprised in the treatment you receive. Those who give and do NOT bring it up in a "But I gave sooo much" argument will always get respect regardless.....

Indeed, Dark Half. GFK was WAY out of line in that thread. I generally only visit the BMax forums and this one and the showcase one.

Is this thread why he sent you an abusive email Gfk? Seems pretty minor. I think it's funny.

A. Assuming the moderator didn't delete content that might have been very insulting or offensive. Who knows who said what at that point (which usually happens, a mod will come in and delete the content that got way over the line, and lock it at the point where it got derailed)

B. Because GFK has never been bias.... ever.....

C. Lastly those who have to air dirty laundry (especially in a way to put a halo above their heads) usually have an internal need to form an army in their defense...

I don't think hiding e-mail addresses from non-moderator forum users (like puki) is the least bit unreasonable

This thread has nothing to do with me - I'm not aware of any complaints been made against me with regard to emails.

I enjoy your emails you send me, Puki

Seems to me you're jumping the gun with your assumptions there Dark Half.

I enjoy your emails you send me, Puki

Unless I have some kind of malware that is sending emails without me knowing. However, nobody has ever emailed me in relation to emails from me, or (to my knowledge) complained on these forums about me.

Seems to me you're jumping the gun with your assumptions there Dark Half.

What gun would that be?

I, for one, completely enjoy it when GFK comes into a thread and spouts off how 'above everyone' he is.

The gestapo of piracy I guess in this case cause if you don't defend your reasoning for having 'said software' and show adequate financial statements supporting your reasoning then your obviously a thief and should be heckled like one.....

Other examples are usually left alone as the usual <insert low belt comment here> is ignored as the usual ramblings of such unless of course the person spewing such <low belt comment> isn't a regular, or better yet, has been flagged as a common enemy by the regulars.

So my point was: Follow your own advice and email BRL about your complaint instead of airing your personal dispute with someone to everyone. The very first sentence was
Having just received a nasty abusive e-mail from this guy

Was enough to draw attention to the fire, and hope to gain the sympathy vote being a regular and known supporter of anti-piracy propaganda. It would have been the same if he came over to your house and asked you to "fetch your pitchfork and torch and follow me, weez got some lynching to do!".

What's your problem?

This thread was a reasonable request for a forum feature until you and Duffer started chipping in and digging for dirt. Actually that's not really fair on Duffer since you're the one doing all the trolling, as usual.

Yep, and since most forum software nowadays have the option to hide email addresses, its a fair request. And though and behold, most forums do indeed have a 'Request' forum too!

So I request a request forum! :P

and unless the thread had been edited the locked 3dsmax thread was tame and any and all humour used from how i read it xylvian as the butt of the joke

NP, my point was made I believe. I'm done ranting for the week :-)

Unless I have some kind of malware that is sending emails without me knowing. However, nobody has ever emailed me in relation to emails from me, or (to my knowledge) complained on these forums about me.

I think Flameduck only intended to identify you as someone who hides his email address. ie...

I don't think hiding e-mail addresses from non-moderator forum users (like puki [does]) is the least bit unreasonable

its not very hidden ... if its HIS email is another matter ;)

Hmm does seem a problem,if you use your real email address on these forums.Anyone from them can send you what they want.NOT GOOD

OK, will implement this.

\o/

/me write's down GFK's email address while it is still visible
"I'm not telling you" CHECK ;-P

Also could you at least MD5 the password which is stored as plain text in a cookie?

The fact that you looked tells me you were actually going to. That's pretty immature.

Yeah, use PHP's MD5() function to store encrypted passwords. When a user logs in, MD5 their input and compare that against the user database. If the MD5s match, the password is correct.

lol, just looked and it appears the plain text password in cookies in indeed now hashed. Good news. When was that changed?

Ah, so it is! :)

They prolly changed it when that Russian guy tried pilfering everybody's passwords last year.

Ah that's very relieving, was a bit alarming when that all kicked off. Nice to see it fixed!

The fact that you looked tells me you were actually going to. That's pretty immature.

Hardly... Honestly GFK, the world doesn't revolve around you like you would like to think.

Immature is taking the internet seriously....

What about the PM system :(

Personally, I think the system should be you can opt to have your email visible to forum members or hidden - then everyone is happy.

What PM system?

Exactly.

What PM system?

Private messaging?

Private messaging?
I think he was pointing out that there is no PM system here, rather than asking what a PM system is...

Yes, I meant "What PM system?"
in the sense of "Where is this PM system?",
rather than "What is a PM system?".
Which is just bad English.
Your post made it sound like it already existed in some form.

Personally, I don't see the need for a PM system, you can just email or IRC the people you want to talk to and there is already an active IRC system for Blitz users.
http://www.blitzed.org/

I think they use their own BBS system which is a bit limited on features. But a option to make your email address private would be nice.

All you have to do to keep things almost the same is an email button and message form that sends to the email stored in your account settings.

I don't honestly think that essentially making the Blitz website an open mail relay is a good idea.

I don't honestly think that essentially making the Blitz website an open mail relay is a good idea.
definitively.

glad smonh mentioned it's going to be implemented.

Due to what has happened in another thread, I am totally for hiding email address, as ANY member can post on here and show everyone your email address...

I don't know how difficult it would be to implement (doesn't sound hard, but I know from experience that things which appear simple are not always when you've got a lot of existing code) but hiding email address - at least - would be a good idea.

If you edit your profile you can now choose to hide your email address.

While you're making improvements to the forum (loving the larger post box), any chance you can do something about the forum displaying the full page-list on each sub-category?

I always have to scroll past 6 lines of numerals in this section to start reading the current threads.
(I can't really think of any easy fix for that though without requiring the server to work some extra cycles to do it the way you see on other forums)

At any rate, the addition of the forum code link should help alleviate some unneeded posts with newer users.
(considering that the site FAQ is nowhere near the Community tab)

I'm not sure, having the full list of page number means that Google indexes the entire forum. Maybe they could be moved to the bottom, though.

Idea.

* Show only the first 20 pages with a "show all"(+) option at the end (default if you're logged in).
* Show everything with a "show recent"(+) option at the end (default if you're not logged in, so google gets everything).

Let the user toggle between the two, and store their preference in a cookie.

(+) These options not visible to guests.

How about having just one line of page links at the top, say the first thirty pages. That goes back more than two months even for this, the busiest forum.

Then have the full list, including the first thirty, at the bottom of the page.

Or the first thirty and a [more] option. the 'more' could either be a collapsed <DIV>, or take you do a different page that shows the same thread except with the full-blown list of links.

I went with Floyd's suggestion (mainly because it was easy).

Don't like it Simon, couldn't you use some sort of archive button.

Numbers top and bottom blow my mind.

I like it!

Hehe if it makes you happy.

I'm close to happy.:)

Could try using javascript to just hide all the extra page-links client-side?

.

I just pulled that 30 out of thin air. It's plenty for the way I generally browse the forums.

There are a couple of problems with the new system. First, a less busy forum, with less than 30 pages, currently has phantom links at the top.

The second problem is that a newcomer may not know the list at the bottom exists. Perhaps the list at the top could end with a link that jumps to the full list at the bottom.

I don't really see the problems with having the numbers at the top. It's hardly ALOT of scrolling. You can still see a good chunk of the forum posts.

I like the forum codes link next to "reply to post" :o)

I still think my way would be better.

Actually, why not put a link "show all" after the link to page 30, and have it jump to the bottom of the page when you click it. That'd be easy.
