I know this is a topic that has been time and time before but there hasn't be one around recently so I thought I would create a new one.

So come on everyone lets see your room and computer that you make your creations with/in.

AFAIK this is an acceptable topic for this forum as it relates to the system people are programming on, but if not I do apologise and please feel free to remove it.

Funny because I just reorganized my computer room. Basically, I have an L shape desk which is made out of 3 parts. It's 2 feet deep, 6 feet wide and the left side which gives me another 4 feet wide there. The computer + cables + modem + some other USB/FIREWIRE/MIDI related stuff is in the elbow of the desk (which is 2x2 feet). The two 21inch monitors are in front of me, with 2 sliding keyboard trays which gives me 4 feet wide and 1+ feet deep of extra space for my keyboard and mice.

my room is a perpetual mess
ive got a storage unit that i have limited access to (ie only my m-f days off) so each time i go to hmv i end up with more clutter ... i did move my usb drum kit though ... it well got in my way for watching dvd's

I'm on laptops, so it could be anywhere in the house.

I did have a desktop, but when putting my house up for sale, I decluttered and the desktop went.

I'm moving into a brand spanking new house in 6 weeks, and the third 'bedroom' is going to be my study, and I'm treating myself to a new desktop... With all the 8800X2 trimmings! :P hehehe

@Moraldi: I'm impressed, that's the tidiest workspace I've ever seen. I normally have crumbs all over the desk, the side casing hanging off the PC, cables everywhere, random CD's out their cases on the desk, weird stains on the mouse mat, etc..... I can't provide photo evidence right now as I'm away, I'll do it this weekend.

@andy_mc: Well, I think your workspace is a a typical (and proper) indie workspace. I had to 'remove' all cables from the ground in order to make my wife's cleaning schedule more frequent... It is true that I collected some of the books and CD's to take the shot :)

Ah yes. The flooring is quite old actually. Should be replaced in the future though.

Hehe I don't use it. It's my brothers pc. He doesn't use it very much. But the box with paper can be moved so it isn't that bad :-). And there's also a different chair for that desktop. So it's very do-able. I mainly use it because it only has Windows Vista installed and I can't be bothered to reboot my system to Windows Vista. It really replaced an 8 year old system plus it was a real bargain (system + screen for € 650,-).

The laptop and left desktop are mine. Laptop is about 3 years old and has a intel integrated graphics card. Great for testing and developing my current C++/SDL/OpenGL game. I can test it with older hardware to see if the framerate is still ok.

hehe thanks, I like it too, only problem is you can't easily hide all the wires. If the tubing was thicker you could run cables through the desk frame and add USB ports etc. Maybe I should try some furniture design :).

Winni, are you running a triple monitor setup off the mac? If so, what's the performance like? Which graphics card?

Moraldi: Yeah, I know, that photo is a good example for how it's not done. ;-)

DavidDC: Yep, it's a triple monitor setup with two nVidia 7300GT --- see my latest bug report for BlitzMax. ;-)

These nVidias are not the fastest, but, hm, the Mac version of Doom 3 runs very nicely at 1600x1200 with maximum details on that machine and the Mac version of UT2004 also runs extremely smoothly on 1920x1200 with max details. Of course, they only use one screen of the three.

I also have a 32-bit version of Vista in a BootCamp partition; Crysis and STALKER ran rather crappy on it, but STALKER does not like Vista anyway, as it seems. It was playable, but not overwhelmingly convincing. But otherwise Vista handles the three displays very well, albeit only with a graphics performance index of 4.0-4.3, depending on the graphics driver version.

But I do not really care that much for the gaming performance of that machine, to be honest - the Xbox 360 has become my main gaming vehicle, and she is also connected to that HP display (via VGA). So it would be irrational to upgrade to, let's say, 8800GTs just to have more gaming performance and ventilation noise in the Mac. At the moment the machine is rather quiet, and I'd like to keep it that way.

I'm more interested in how that baby runs stuff like Apple's Aperture, and -that- performance is beyond questioning - thanks to 8GB RAM and four Xeon cores you hardly notice that it is loading the next RAW picture, and image manipulations are applied instantly. But I've already found (and reported) some new bugs in Aperture since I have two graphics cards in the Mac; changing certain settings like contrast or black point can produce a plain black image on the secondary and tertiary display. On a plain one graphics card/two display setup that never happened.

having priced up roof blinds and sticky plastic stuff, i went with large white cardboard sheets dont get Condensation, just have to finish off silicone round them


poor mans shades, works like a charm and at £2.50 a sheet was a bargain

Was going to mention that but now I think its just camera lens warping since the top is bent too, and the shelf the printer is on.

(Unless he shops at MFI, then having an completely bent PC workstation is entirely conceivable)

OK, this kinda worked. Four photos bolted together - think this is about as good as its going to get.

Desk space is kind of small but so's the room; I don't often work in here. Usually just artwork happens on this PC, and the coding is normally done downstairs on the laptop.

That's more like it. I was about to mention that myself. And your room gfk, looks about 4 times bigger than mine.

Just changed my two monitors :) Now I have a DELL P1130 (left) and a DELL P1110 (right). So, now I can do crazy resolutions and refresh rates with both monitors, and they are black! Paid 40$ each.

With prices of around 200 euro for a 22" currently, there's no excuse for getting one.. (I've 2 of 'em :P)

@Plash: I advise you to lower your monitor because it is not anatomic for your neck.
The upper side of the monitor must be in the same level we are looking horizontally
This is a good reason for all of us who spend a lot of time in front of a monitor to save some money and buy a good office chair where we can adjust the height

Okay here's my computer zone, the PowerPC iMac on the left is my wife's, the Intel iMac on the right is mine - with BlitzMax open of course ;-) No exciting gadgets or extra equipment here. We could also do with a second desk I think.

My iMac is running OSX Leopard, Windows Vista, Ubuntu 8 and Kubuntu 8 on Intel for cross-platform development and hers is running PowerPC OSX Leopard. I just got a new mouse mat today, since it's my 33rd birthday :-D

I used to have a mac just like your wife's. There was a leak in the roof and it got rained on - which was a great pity as I think that model was a classic.

I have an unusually long neck, if I don't slouch I get exactly horizontal with the top of the monitor, however that hurts my neck. I find sitting back in my chair, looking directly below the middle of the monitor is best.

I can adjust mine.

I have Ubuntu 8 as a real bootable partition on the harddrive in ext3 format. But I also use Parallels Desktop virtualization software to run Vista and Linux from the desktop. Parallels can use the Vista partition directly but it cannot use a Linux partition so it has to create a virtual disk as a file. Since it can't read the bootable Linux I figured I might as well install a different flavor of Linux as the virtual one, to try out the KDE desktop but also to see if there are any performance or support issues between them - or more to the point, it's purely because I can't use the bootable linux partition directly from within OSX. Also I liked being able to test Linux under virtualization before installing it `for real` and I wanted to see if Kubuntu 8 would work on my machine because 7.10 did not. Then I upgraded Ubuntu from 7.04 to 8 afterwards.

lol, since the conservatory is on the back of the house which faces north most of it is in shadow all day long

the roof was tinted , but still let too much ambient light in, but now its fine with blinds and a sheeted roof

plus it was the cheaper option for an office

i dont have to worry about it being an oven...this is manchester, england, its more likely to get washed away in the rain
