P2P software

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/P2P software

..whay would you recommend me to use for P2P music sharing?? without any banners or some addware/spyware?? What you guys using?

Its illegal. This isn't the place to ask.

really? I didnt know that...

It's only illegal if you share music of which you have no exploitation rights. I know quite a few people who share their own music via Emule.

Depending on the country where you live in, downloading music/videos can be perfectly legal (as it is in Holland, for instance)

lol.

whay would you recommend me to use for P2P music sharing??
Why? No one did, and no one will.

..I thought its okay since after I google a bit, I noticed loads of commercial software for P2P, so i thought its okay, and wanted to hear from you if eventually exist some freeware software for that that all..I had no idea that thing is illegal actually..

If you live in canada its not legal to download, just upload.

www.apple.com/itunes is a legal service, so is napster now.

I like to use Emule mostly.

Some people say it's too slow (mostly people that don't know what the config button is for), but it has no spyware and crap inside that leads to anoying popups.

..im living in Asia man..here is legal everything you can imagine..:)

It's legal as long as you don't upload/download illegal stuff. I'd recommend eMule or BitTorrent. But beware: choose what you download or share carefully because the P2P scene is an illegal mindfield.

..im living in Asia man..here is legal everything you can imagine..:)
No, its the same disregard for intellectual property and copyright as Eastern Europe.

im with gfk on that one that is what interpol is for, catching crooks the world over.

I would avoid P2P completely and go for an established music download site like iTunes, MSN Music or Napster.

I use MSN music and really have no need for any P2P apps unless I'm downloading Linux or MMO updates.

P2P systems are used everywhere; BBC iPlayer, Sky PC Video, Steam, for downloading Linux etc so it's not illegal unless you use it for something illegal.

:)

I use Limewire.

http://www.limewire.com/

Utorrent is absolutly spyware/adware free and very small and efficient. Simply using it (the software) is not illegal in any way, in fact their are plenty of legitmate torrents.

Obviously you need to be aware of what you download and what laws apply in your country to the content your downloading but that is the same with any software.

Darkheart

P2P software is NOT illegal.
Nor is it not illegal to share files at all, provided the rights holders say its ok. A lot of music/video/books and software out there has permission to be shared, distributed and downloaded by the artists/authors themselves and even seed their own torrents.

As for the pirate stuff, its simply up to the moral fibre of the individual wether they download it or not, the same way as if they were in a store, would they steal it?

it's not illegal unless you use it for something illegal.
Exactly, kind of like a digital 'carving knife' :)

im with gfk on that one that is what interpol is for, catching crooks the world over.

And yet piracy is both rampant and accepted in most western countries, and pirated goods are blatantly bought and sold in stores as pirated goods in some Eastern countries - for example in China. Well done Interpol!

use frostwire or utorrent.

I love that many P2P clients are advertised as adware and spyware free. Like it makes a difference when 99% of people are going to use them to download pirated stuff, most of which is so rife with keyloggers and assorted malware that you'd hardly notice a little bit of adware or spyware.

There's a lot of scaremongering on this thread. Pirated stuff is rife with keyloggers and malware! Download pirated stuff and interpol will punish you!!

I've heard that 99% of torrents help spread male pattern baldness. Even to females. And that 78% of all downloaders are eventually identified and assassinated by the Freemasons.

hmmm.... Me thinks that this could turn into a pirated debate thread.

As for P2P software.

emule/amule, shareaza, lime wire, morpheus, kazaa, frostwire. With these programs you can search the central server that holds the list of machines that are connected and what files are being shared. So to share files you just add them to the clients share folder ( or add a new directory to share). Note you may have to play with the client share settings.

Where as utorrent, azureus, bittornado and other bit torrents clients. You have to download a torrent file to gain access to what you are trying to down load (which may no longer be available) and to upload you have to announce to a bit torrent "tracker" that you are wanting to share a file.

Here's more on bittorrent http://dessent.net/btfaq/

I've heard that 99% of torrents help spread male pattern baldness

I'm ok with that as long as it doesn't make you impotent.

I can't believe you would all suggest apps for him to illegally download music. RIAA!! lock down this thread! :P

There's a lot of scaremongering on this thread.

I think you're confusing scaremongering with facts and experience. Anyone who fixes computers for a living will tell you stories of the PC's which are so loaded down with crap that they barely boot and have about five P2P apps running all the time.

Pirated stuff is rife with keyloggers and malware!

Since I'm the only one who uses the words keyloggers or malware, I'm going to assume that's me you misquoted so badly. What I said was that pirate material downloaded via P2P is loaded with keyloggers and malware, not pirate software in general. Do you really suppose these people, who are clearly interested only in themselves in order to be pirating stuff in the first place are sitting there all day upstreaming gigabytes of stuff to other people out of the goodness of their heart?

Well, of course. I'm sorry if my meaning was unclear; I assumed that it would be since this thread is about titled "P2P software".

Do you really suppose these people, who are clearly interested only in themselves in order to be pirating stuff in the first place are sitting there all day upstreaming gigabytes of stuff to other people out of the goodness of their heart?

Some people, the majority even, simply want stuff for free and have no problem sharing with others. Goodness has nothing to do with it - it's about acting in your own best interests and allowing others to do the same. However, I gather that many dedicated release groups compete with each other for prestige - a silly waste of time, if you ask me, but there you go.

Its illegal.
No.

No, its the same disregard for intellectual property l and copyright as Eastern Europe.
Not all countries have intellectual property rights. Most notably Taiwan has not signed the WIPO treaty and thus has no copyright legislation.

im with gfk on that one that is what interpol is for, catching crooks the world over.
Except GfK is wrong (UK laws do not apply to other countries, and P2P file sharing is no more inherently illegal than sending things through the mail). Besides that's not what Interpol is for (Interpol allows National/Federal police agencies to share information about criminals who cross national borders to avoid capture - it does not have international jurisdiction [in fact it has no jurisdiction at all] nor does it prosecute people who are doing something perfectly legal in the country they live in, but which happens to be illegal in some other country).

I mean you wouldn't want Interpol officers kicking your door down and dragging your wife away to be stoned to death, because she took the car for a spin would you?

I would avoid P2P completely and go for an established music download site like iTunes, MSN Music or Napster.
Particularly if you mostly listen to mainstream, indistinct, commercialized, soulless garbage.

I can't believe you would all suggest apps for him to illegally download music.
Apart from GfK, who else would even think of downloading illegal music? I mean there's so much great music you can have for free legally, it seems rather silly to steal something like (say) the laughing stock that is "St. Anger". I mean the only reason to steal music, would be because finding any of Metallica's *good* albums is kinda hard unless you live in 1992.

Particularly if you mostly listen to mainstream, indistinct, commercialized, soulless garbage.

So wrong...

Ross, you musn't go knocking Flameduck off his high horse, that's my job!

;)

I read that it was only illegal if you burn them to cd's and sell them. I could be wrong though, I guess.

It should be illegal to download mp3's. Not all of them maybe but most of them...

Imagine you are an artist and making an album and charging some money for the final product. Then some kid opens his/her p2p sharing thingy and gets it for free in a matter of seconds.

I think it's no different than stealing cd's from a music shop. But that doesn't mean I don't download mp3's.

I don't download music because internet radio is so much better.

<3 Techno.

@Gfk
>>No, its the same disregard for intellectual property and copyright as Eastern Europe. <<

Well..I am not expert but I think you are right..however, im living here past 5 years, and I tell you here you can enter whole shopping mall where people selling pirate software of any kind..you name it..so, whatever case may be, reality here (I spend some time in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand) is as i have described...Japan is not like that(im living there), so, this is what i see here so far..

I don't download music because internet radio is so much better.

I share the same opinion.

So much easier to just let someone else deal with song selection/playback while not have to tread over the questionable P2P subject. The only hard part is finding a radio station that suits your tastes.

You know, he was just asking for the software names, not a general discussion on the ethics of p2p file sharing.

Of course, he could have found the answer on google in about 10 seconds.

..I did Google and got loads of software, but far as i can see, full of addware and who knows what, so i wanted to ask you folks, what you using if you using any...thats all..

You know, he was just asking for the software names
He said 'whay would you recommend me to use for P2P music sharing??', now to me that sounds like he wants software to share music, which is mostly illegal. No one should be helping him, especially here.

you are right Plash...please, dont help me and save yourself from sin..

Imagine you are an artist and making an album and charging some money for the final product.
Imagine you're an artist or DJ trying to make a name for yourself, and offering your music for free, in an attempt to gain recognition. Imagine you're NIN, Radiohead or George Michael simply offering your music for free (presumably because you already have more money than god, and you actually enjoy making music).

Imagine all your fans going to jail. How is that helping you?

to me that sounds like he wants software to share music, which is mostly illegal.
No it isn't. It depends on a) which country you live in, and b) which music you're sharing.

Sharaza if you need BitTorrent and Emule
EDonkay 2000 for pure Emule
and for highly media oriented BitTorrent Azureus 3

It should be illegal to download mp3's. Not all of them maybe but most of them...

Times change. In NL there's a certain compensation on blank CDs and DVDs which will be divided between artists. While this compensation may not be much per CD/DVD, keep in mind this compensation is also being payed for all those 10000's o' backup CD/DVD's for ordinary companies, on a daily base.

When someone downloads a CD rather than buying, the artist only misses an euro or something, probably even less (esp. when he's not alone, e.g. band members, producers etc.). The rest of the retail price goes to the retailer and the publisher. Those retailers aren't going to be living for a long time when they only get a few euro for a $25 CD.

Usually the actual artist is the least-payed in the chain. Artists usually make their money with concerts, which is why you usually don't hear the artists complain about P2P'ing. It's the retail and the publishers who do so. And that may be because the whole business model for media is going to change. Compare the individual grocery with a supermarket. That's also a change of business model. The grocery shop owner will prolly complain about the supermarket, but the supermarket is -compared to the grocery- simply the new business model. Shops and professions come and go, something new replaces something old.

I agree but it's still stealing no matter if you steal from the artist or the whole company, artist, producer etc.

This model is turning into internet sale and they charge per mp3's.

(eg. http://www.tikidub.com/ )

In switzerland you pay tripple compensation on harddisks and empty CD / DVD now ...
You pay on CD / DVD
You pay on Harddisks
You pay on MP3 player

So if I download a track to my harddisk, make a backup and put it on my MP3 player, I've payed three times the fee for it.
After all its legal to download here anyway. Only uploading is illegal.

p2p programs upload and download at the same time if you don't turn off the sharing within the program.

Technologically you don't share 'music'. There was an interesting article about this in a musictech magazine many years ago.

Am I allowed to plant flowers in such a way that their location represents bits? (flower, no flower)? What if I stuff my whole garden with bytes like that, and I take an photo from the sky and put it online, would that be legal? Anyone could convert my garden back to bits and bytes and thus one can copy a file like that.

The point is that a file on its own doesn't mean a thing. If an mp3 of 40kb doesn't have .mp3 as extension but .txt then I can load it into notepad. I could also load it into Photoshop as raw file. I could load it into soundforge as raw 8bit sample, or even 16bit, mono, stereo, little endian, big endian. A file only means something when you load it in a relevant player or application. What would I be uploading while downloading? A whole file? or only a few KB here and there? What are those KBs on their own? I'd say: nothing, because they really do nothing. How could I be accused of sharing "music" when a) a digital file means nothing on its own, and b) a *part* of a digital file means even less?

Discuss plz.. :P

asking for a p2p that is for music is kinda asking for old napster
i dont recall hearing about anything but mp3's going either way on napster

but other p2p's are catch all
text videos music pr0n games you name it

so i dont think their is a dedicated music p2p program but possibly a music website

as for recording artists who 'give away' songs on the net
i got ghosts trial download from www.ghosts.nin.com it was a work once link that was emailed to me and got me 6 or so from the 36? that came on the £11 double cd i got a few days ago
you could donate (like when i got the whole album "niggy tardust" by saul williams) but i chose to get the free one (ive not found niggy tardust in hmv yet but when i do im buying it (unless its too bloody expencive) ... its worth it for his version of sunday bloody sunday alone :)

i dont buy from itunes but i like the fact that unsigned bands can sell via them too
i used to download songs from my3 on my phone and then get the mp3/wma from their websites, but since going to a 160gb mp3 player (just so happens to be iPOD but thats cos it was the only one on retail sale for price/gb) ive not needed to as i filled it with my music folder and still havnt listened to everything (or ripped every cd i own cos some are in storage oop norf)
