Jack Thompson Goes After Strauss Zeilnick's Mum

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Jack Thompson Goes After Strauss Zeilnick's Mum

Behold, the latest in the lowest of low tactics Jack Thompson has used. I'm honestly amazed he would do something like this- he should at least have some standards, however poor and insane they are.

Wow what a jerk.

I don't particularly like the GTA games, but really it's the parents who ultimately censor what their kids watch and play. True, they are pretty gruesome, but I can play the game and not have urges to kill cops. (Although I did spot a particular van that I recognized looked like the "Rumpo" in GTA3.)

Plus, although a lot of the game is gang related there is a ton to do that doesn't have violence at all. I like driving people in taxis and wrecking stuff... harmless fun.

"Is this how you want to raise your child? you let him produce violent games and look what he become... it's the chairman of a multimillionaire corporation!"

This move is just plain bizarre: even if he was right (far from it - his assumptions make him look in dire need of a psychiatrist as usual: in this text he raises the bar again comparing GTA players to Hitler's youth), I suppose the word "millions of dollars" he uses in the letter is the only one which rings in the mother's ears. :)

And even if his mother was ashamed (she would more probably be amazed by seeing a screening of the game) what could she do, slap him in the back?

Anyone know if Jack Thompson's mom is alive -- and if so, what her address is?

the Grand Theft Auto murder simulator games banned in some countries
Like Iran and China?

True, they are pretty gruesome
Compared to what? Headline news? Why isn't this moron crusading against Rupert Murdoch?

but I can play the game and not have urges to kill cops.
Sure. But can you read one of Whacky Jacks letters, and not have an urge to kill HIM?

Who is "Jack Thompson"?

markcw, we have this thing called Google, y'see. And it lets you find things..

It's amoral murder porn for the proles. What's left at the bottom of the already fetid gaming barrel? Not much, but I'm sure it will be dredged up and packaged with shaders regardless.

Surely the responsiblity is on the parents not to buy $50 violent games for their kids. They say kids can buy the games online with no age check, where does a 15 year old child get a credit card from? His parents. Jack thompson can't sue individual parents, so he just goes after the source. He's an attention seeking idiot who unfortunately seems to get a lot of support from idiot parents who blame companies for their own problems in raising their kids.

I've played many violent games, all the GTA games, all quake games, all half life, Postal, etc... and have no violent tendencies outside of the game.

those that do get violent are probably that way becuase they're parents obviously pay no attnetion to them so they can just sit playing what ever the hell they want and get ideas from it, not motivation.

Yeah me too... I've only killed 8 or 9 cops but they deserved it I tell ya... oh... and ran over a few people, but I got a high score! Hah HHHHA Haaa huh huh hhuuuuu where's me pills?!

Carmageddon was the first GTA. That wasn't popular with the girly men so they changed the red blood to green and people to zombies and they were allowed to sell it.

where's me pills?!
Ahh, you played Pacman in your younger days too?!?

Jack Thompson seems to come across as a 'holier than thou' character preaching an being judgemental to the Mum of Strauss Zeilnick.
I very much doubt Strauss's Mum said to him, "Now then son, when you grow up I want you to sell games where you can kill police and pedestrians. There's a good boy!"

Religious zealots, (read "nutters" if you prefer), seem to feel they can justify just about anything and have no problems inflicting their efforts on people who have nothing to do with their issues: People who happen to be on a train, at a market, know someone they hate, be related to someone they hate, work for a magazine that printed an article they hated etc.

I've been convinced for some time that organised religion is an evil in society and should be removed as quickly as possible.

Thanks for the tip. I bow to your experience.

Did kids start getting out of control and take guns to school when they started allowing violence on TV and in games, or is there some other cause...

Hmmm, it seems to me, that the problems like these with kids started around the same time they started putting parents in jail for spanking their kids...

Bring back spanking and beating your kids, and the kids will fall back into line.

Did kids start getting out of control and take guns to school when they started allowing violence on TV and in games, or is there some other cause...
No. Kids have behaved violently well before there was such a thing as "TV" and "games". Despite what you might think, since the rise in popularity of violent videogames (Mortal Kombat 1992) violent crimes have been in a constant and steady decline.

I guess when people are sitting in front of TV's slaughtering virtual people, they aren't out on the streets slaughtering people.

and ran over a few people, but I got a high score!

I miss the pedestrians combo of the first GTA!

LOL, sarchasm much?

Did you even read the rest of my message?

I think the topic is getting a bit out of control... fearing your parents differs from understanding human values. Once in a while it can be understandable but I don't condone the idea. Let your child have a reason to admire your moral attitude, and when they do something out of line you will not need to resort to physical violence if you feel he has to be ashamed of his actions. Let him fear you and he will simply stray from you when he becomes an adult leaving the problems unsolved while adding psychological burdens along the way.

I think childs do need to develop their own critical thinking: choosing what they can or can not play without their interaction if useless, if not dangerous. If I found my child playing, let's say, a Silent Hill game, I would simply approach him and start talking about about the aspects which strike me, and what I find disturbing or even interesting. If he values your judgement he will tend to like what you approve, and he'll probably avoid playing it if you feel clearly unpleasant. And if you think that it's really more then enough, tell him directly, explain the reasons and put the game away (a Silent Hill game is reasonably easy to explain, if only because of possible nightmares ;) )... but that should really be an exception and not the norm. It's still an artistic creation after all, and a parent should never react as if they discovered, let's say, that he has a habit of beating fellow people. Otherwise, if you let him leave in a world of Pixar and Disney, one day they will still discover trends you find out of line without having them known what you think about it (as his model, not his autority), and they could like aspects which were never discussed before without him knowing your opinion on the subject.

GTA is almost like an action flick or a gangsta movie, something that any child saw at some point (like in the famous 'Home Alone' scene). Personally, as a child I found most of them quite boring to watch, and the GTA series is actually interesting not much because of the storyline (even though in San Andreas it became quite good) but because of the gameplay. I would regard it as almost okay to be played with a parent, and almost interesting in a way since you have free will and could try to avoid 'unnecessary' violence while doing the missions (such being careful in car chases and shootings), and as long as you avoid some of the most deprecable actions. However, missions tend to became quite immoral even for TV standards if you relate the main character to a movie star and not the villain, and that's the off putting aspect which makes the game adult only without a reserve.

those that do get violent are probably that way becuase they're parents obviously pay no attnetion to them so they can just sit playing what ever the hell they want and get ideas from it, not motivation.

I agree, there are latent tendencies and reasons if you are going to commit such crimes.

However, I don't consider most videogames to be written good enough to get ideas from them. ;)
It has often been true for novels though.

I want to hit Jack Thompson with my car. Why? Because I did it before in GTA obviously. So did everyone else who has ever hit anybody with a car before. If a mobster from the 20's hit someone with a car, then it's obvious they had practiced the move on GTA. It's only logical.

The heck with GTA, they should make a Death Race 2000 game.

I think this guy neededs to have a reality check. Ok many games have graphic violence and it should be the parents responsibility to censor what they play and watch, but once they reach the status of adult they can do what they want.

The people who blame video games for violent crimes also needed a reality check as it's more likley that the individual who commits these crimes has some form of mental illness or has had a bad upbrining.

Then after all this guy lives in a country where buying a gun is easyer than farting in public.

There was a bit in the paper that reported "that because of all the shooting's on school campus in the USA. Teachers and students will be allowed to carry fire arms in school"

Talk about throwing water onto a oil fire.
