Quake3 on iPod Touch

Anybody got one of these iPod Touch things?

I'm considering getting one.

I like the idea that you can flip video into widescreen.

I was surprised - somewhat gobsmacked - to see people are running game on them. I assume, they were not intended for gaming?

From what I recall, the iTouch is a locked platform, so you have to go out of your way and jailbreak it to run your own software.

It's cool to see Q3 running on the system (more-so networked), but what's really going to hurt a fair amount of games is the lack of actual buttons for controls. All there is, is the accelerometer and the multi-touch screen.
(almost like a Wii remote/DS mashed together without the buttons/IR <.<)

I have an iPod Touch. It's my "people protection device" when I'm using the subway and don't want to hear other people's conversations. Which means I mainly use it as an mp3 and video player.

But for those who haven't followed the news and the latest developments: The iPhone SDK actually is also for the iPod Touch; they run the very same OS and both will be supported by Apple's AppStore. So it's no longer a really closed platform (but it's not really "open" either - read the license and distribution agreements for details).

The SDK announcement video is still available on Apple's homepage. You should watch it -- they actually showed off a couple of games and partnerships with a bunch of software and game companies.

If you want to have the SDK and write software for the iPod Touch and iPhone, buy an Intel Mac and join the Apple Developer Connection where you can get the SDK from.

I would get the iPhone - but it is only available on contract. I want it on Pay-as-You-Go.

I have an iPod touch and i love it.
Still waiting for the iPhone to come to Denmark.

BUT... wait until after June 6th 2008 when next software update is released...(or you will have to pay to upgrade it) you'll have a lot more features, including the i-Store where developers can see their apps and games right from the i-Touch and i-Phone home page.

Yeh, I heard about Apple charging people to update firmware. Seems a bit cheeky to me.

I also have an Ipod Touch. It's excellent. And it is now very easy and safe to jailbreak them with the release of pwnage.

If you can wait till June that's cool, but there are already tons of useful and fun apps available now.

Not to mention all the emulators available.

Sega Genesis, SNES, GB Advanced, PS1 and others.

Plus there are ways now to use the touch as a VOIP phone for free + microphone.

Safari is sweet and so is the mail client.

It's like the rebirth of the newton!
