Mobile phone - Good all-rounder?

Can you recommend a new mobile phone?
General features being:

Dual Band
Good camera
GPS
Music player
Video playback
Occasional gaming
WIFI
Bluetooth

So far the Nokia N95 seems a good fit but maybe there is something better/cheaper(?)

You can't go wrong with a Sony Ericsson. Forget the N95, it's a chunky, battery guzzling waste of money. i should know, I sell them everyday.

I have a N95, functionality it does what you need.

If you don't mind charging your phone every night then the battery's not that much of a problem. The n95 8gb version is ment to have a better battery tho. And there is a new 'video' version coming out sometime in the near future. Also of note, there are firmware upgrades that give added functionality - For example, assisted gps (using some network/internet look up to faster get a lock with gps).

If your a tech sort of guy, you can upload some fancy stuff to the phone and have fun with it. I myself find the 5MPIX camera dead handy for the odd snap here and there, good quality pics too.

I'm very courious about it.... and it seems to be ready to run Android.

Since I don't have and need a private phone, I live with a Motorola RAZR sponsored by my employer.

But I have a very simple benchmark for buying a phone, in case I'd have to get one: I don't need fancy toys in it, but it has to be compatible with --ME--. And so far, only the iPhone passes that test. So my recommendation for you is: Try an iPhone. (You won't be needing GPS in a cell phone anyway.)

hehe, I have a really simple phone that I'm quite fond of. Only does phonecalls, text and voicemail but the battery lasts over a week. Might just be that I don't really use the phone and only my wife and vet has the number.

Yup. That's one thing putting me off at the moment. The all-singing-all-dancing phones seem to have extremely short battery life

Are they still tied to a network? I need a dual-bander without any lock-downs. A phone which will accept Orange pay as you talk SIM

What about Simbian S60? Is this a common standard?
I would like to develop a few simple apps for the phone too

iPhones are on O2 only. They've just had a £100 price cut though.

Not sure if they can be unlocked or not. I'd imagine they can but don't quote me.

getting used to touch screen takes a day or so
battery takes a big hit when u play with it, first day lasted 9 hours, just getting 2 days out of it now

In France they have a law that forces the companies to sell the iPhone without contract. But from what I've heard, they charge the ridiculous sum of EUR 999,- for it.

You can also order a hacked iPhone from the US. We've got one of those in the family and one at work (I've hacked it myself, there's a nice Mac-only-tool for it out there); they work perfectly well. You just have to be careful with software updates... That's why I don't like hacked/cracked stuff. :-p

But in the end you don't want to have an iPhone without an Internet flatrate anyway. The mobe Internet's what the gadget was made for.

Other than that, I'm with Evak. I make one or two very short phone calls per month on my cell phone, and I --HATE-- being called. If you want something from me - send me an email or visit me.

I've been really happy with an O2 XDA Stellar, very responsive and I run Copilot7 satnav on it.

You can buy an iPhone for £160 from O2, then choose not to activate the contract when you get it home (which is done via iTunes), instead use a custom piece of software to 'unlock it', and you can then use a SIM card of your choice.

Yep, I wish to stear clear of this iPhone 'hacking' lark. My concern is the phone will lock out at some point in the future. However, £160 is a good price

I think I would prefer a phone with S60 hardware / Symbian O/s since there is Python available for developing on it
