How do I set up my own web site

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/How do I set up my own web site

Hey, everyone.
I am interested in setting up my own web site to
display my games on. Because filefront, although useful, is not very customizable.
So I would like to know how to set up, a completly
independet website that is not part of another site.
(Like MySpace, and filefront)

If anyone can tell me how, or tell about a program that
would help me do this, I will be VERY grateful to them.

The Mighty WERDNA(Overcompensating)

I'm going to mail you to Sun Pat and ask them to make me a few jars of Walnut Butter.

Ty Perturbatio,
Thanks for the links.
And Puki, ?????
I'm not sure what to think about your comment, but
I guess Ty, I like Walnut Butter.
If anyone else has anymore links to add to Perturbatios
list, I would certainly be happy to here them.

Ty again again guys,
And Puki?????

@WERDNA

If you need more control over your site, you need a web space, google pages are fine, furthermore you can actually make your online home more attractive.

Do you have budget on webspace etc, there're free ones too, if you want some info I'll post further.

try one.com I have used them for multiple domain names, you can get everything you need for £10 a year at the moment (domain, hostage and setup)

They have a website builder thing you can use, and later you can use the hosting to build your own site if you want to expand it

Thanks so much everyone for your help.
and Yoko, if you don't mind I would like more information on free webspaces.
Because I do have the cash to pay for one if I have too,
but it would be preferable if I didn't.

I like the look of Googles page creator,
http://pages.google.com/
But I'm kind of hesitant to use it since it's so new.
If they update it, or remake it, what will happen to my
WebPage since it's then using an older version?
If anyone has more information on there experience with Google Page Creator, I would certainly appreciate
your input.

Ty, Dabhand, looks awsome.

the google page creator is unlikely to break your site during an upgrade, as far as I can tell it's storing the text and images separately from the template even after page creation (like a CMS does). This means that even if they completely redesign the whole package, your content will be transferable.

Even if it weren't it wouldn't be hard to get the content out of it all.

Werdna;
My suggestion would be to look at this; http://www.trellian.com/webpage/

Learn PHP, its easy.

If you want unique domain names/hosting you should take a look at GoDaddy.com, dunno if its us only though.

Should probably stop calling yourself "mighty" when asking such basic questions.

Why should the prohibiter just be basic questions ?

I call you "WALNUT" because you clearly cannot spell it.

Cannot spell WALNUT?,
????
I just did.

And MAJOR Thanks everyone for all of your help.

The Unnecessary WERDNA(her avatar was hot)

I wanted a unique domain and came up with this

http://www.dogshit.com/

love the heading 'make your own dogshit' LOL

...

I must agree with Plash,
.....(Except I put in more dots)

I think I'll stick with Trellian and Googles page creator.
They look like the best options.
Ty again everyone for all of your help.

WERDNA(I'm pretty sure she's a girl anyway)

lol@Ruz...

On a similar note, www.whitedogshit.com has been taken... Who the bloody hell would want a domain about white dog poop?

I just did.

You copied! :P hehehe

Hi, WERDNA

Most free space are limited or ad-supported, that may cause some problem.

You can get SyntaxBomb's space and use your domain name.

Btw, if you don't want to php scripts on your site (eg. pure HTML), try http://www.sitesled.com/

Walnut, how much space and bandwidth do you need?

Werdna,
Don't mind Puki, he's special. If you ever do understand him, you'd be the first. ;)

wat is Walnut anyway?

it's a nut, a bit like puki really. ;)

boom boom! :)

Just a quick tip: check to see if your ISP offers free webspace. I was a click a way from buying webspace when I found that out.

Cheap webhosting can be found at http://www.e-rice.net/.

Yahoo! Domains ($10) is an excellent service... even though its a bit more costly that a domain from, say, Go Daddy ($3-10), they offer a lot of cool features and I highly recommend it.

Also, I found it a lot easier to learn HTML instead of using one of those "customize site" module things. All it takes is pulling up Notepad, writing some code, than uploading with Filezilla.

I don't think I need too much space or bandwith.
Googles limit is 100 MB and i think that will be fine.
You see I'm setting up a site for a family member of
mine that doesn't know much about computers, so
I think google would be best because it looks easy.
For myself, I think I'll use Syntax Bomber. It looks pretty
cool.

Ty again everyone one for all of your help.

I was surprised when I first started posting on this site
how Incredibly nice everyone was. Even when a game
sucks, you guys usually find something nice to comment on, and give really useful, constructive criticism.

So Major thanks everyone for being so incredibly helpful
to a poor, noobish Immortal like me. : )

The slippery when wet WERDNA(Rinse and repeat)

Andrew, can you stop that 'immortal WERDNA (Lord of everything)' business so that I am not being consistently reminded of my own kindergarden days where I ran around the village in a black cape pretending to be Dracula and Zorro at the same time? ;-)

As for the topic at hand: I don't know where you can get free web space, because I've actually never used stuff like that -- I hate having ads and other crap on my site. My website is on an own domain running on a rented server.

My recommendation for you is to read up on web technologies, languages and protocols and to learn how to actually program that stuff yourself. The documentation is out there on the web (look for 'RFCs/Request For Comments', selfHTML, and, of course, Apache). Don't wast your time on Windows Server-related crap; you don't have the money for it and most of the web runs on Linux/Unix machines anyway.

As long as you are not doing it for money, it can actually be fun.

Ok, thanks for the info.
And LOL.
I know I'm annoying sometimes, but I won't stop the
WERDNA thing.
