Windows shortcut keys prob?

PLEASE HELP!!

My kids were playing on the computer today and now somethings not right with the keyboard shortcuts or something... (or perhaps a virus)

Pressing cursor down is doing F5 (refresh/build in MaxIDE), the 1 key is like pressing "Alt+Enter", pressing the numeric 1 key I get "a", but the "a" key is giving me an "End of line"

Does anybody know how to correct this.

GRRR its taken me half an hour just to type this! its seriously doing my nut in now.

Have you been through everything in Regional/Language Settings (Control panel) to make sure everything is set to UK? Especially check to make sure they haven't changed the keyboard to some wacky layout.

Yeah its all set as UK mate, Its still getting the proper key as well as the added shortcuts. (ie if I press "a" I get an "a" and then the cursor jumps to the end of the line)

I assume you've done a reboot?

AVG`'s just finished scanning and found nothing.

Maybe one of the keys is stuck in?

- Could be a stuck key
- Could also be a hardware problem (short on one of the data lines inside your keyboard)
- Could be that the keyboard connector is not plugged in all the way
- Could be that the PS/2 controller on your motherboard is dieing on you (if you have a PS/2 keyboard, of course)
- If you have a wireless keyboard, the batteries could be running out
- If you have a wireless keyboard, you may be having interference from an external source -- try switching channels if you have a hardware toggle, or re-sync up the keyboard + tranceiver

You can rule out a lot of these by plugging in a different keyboard if you have one around, and see if the problem persists. If it does, they it's either the controller or a software issue.

If you have XP, try doing a system restore (start -> Programming -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore) to a few days ago and see if the problem goes away.

You could also try booting in safe mode and see if the problem persists. If not, they it might be a driver issue.

I found a couple of old keyboards out in the garage, a PS/2 one which is doing the same thing as before, and a wireless USB one which is working fine, YAY.

So now I've got to put up with this poxy old microsoft keyboard until I can pick a decent one up tomorrow (and a new mobo aswell I suppose).

Anyway thanks for your help guys, I was convinced it was a software problem or a virus, and would have been pulling my hair out all night.

If this is the only thing that's bad, you probably don't need a new motherboard at this point... Just stay away from the PS/2 port and you'll probably be fine. It's not uncommong for those to pop, especially if you plug/unplug devices into them while your computer is on.

aye shelling out on a new mobo just to get a working keyboard when a usb one would be way cheaper :)

i avoid wireless devicese on my pc for battery issues ... id hate to be in the middle of something and then nothing

The mobo I've got doesnt recognise USB devices in DOS so that made GRUB boot linux by default, and my arcade controller is PS/2 so I need a working port really.

I picked up a new mobo and USB keyboard this morning and it only cost me £10! (as a mate owns the shop) bargain :)

A bit tlate since you already have a new motherboard, but:

Many motherboard BIOS' have an option for 'USB legacy mode' (often disabled by default) which remaps a USB keyboard so it can be used from DOS and the likes as well without any drivers.
