selling code

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/selling code

anyone here ever get about 80% done with software their writing and just not have time to finish it? If so have you ever sold the code to someone, I'm thinking about doing that but im not sure if it's a good idea or not whats all your opinions on it?

I'm in a similar position with my match three engine. Its all done and working perfectly but I suck royally at artwork so its probably never going to become an actual game.

Wouldn't sell the source code though. Well I might for a load of money.

Double post.

My advice is Don't Sell Unfinished Code, Ever.

I never have.

I buy stuff.

Personally I wouldn't even give it away it just comes back to haunt you. I gave away the source to droplet "as-is" and got email after email asking how does this do this, what does this do etc etc... It's just a can of worms. Unless you document every single line and have in the agreement that they actually have to read the documentation you'll spend the rest of your life supporting code you don't want any more.

yeah i'm not sure I'd hate to see it collect dust.

Ye

I'd hate to see it collect dust.
Then leave it for a later date! (I don't know if that was intended to be a whole sentence, but if you meant you wouldn't care if it never saw the light of day I understand :P)

I think if you do the agreement right it could work but how much money do you seriously expect to get for the code and is it worth the hassel?

If it's Blitz code then your market is pretty limited to other hobbiest programmers who don't have a lot of money to spend on things. Even if the code is awesome I wouldn't expect it to go for more than ~£300-400 MAXIMUM on here.

For someone buying it I think the amount of time saved isn't going to be that great. You need to understand your own code.

Unless your looking to sell it cheaply, I wouldn't bother.

Darkheart

I think it is probably RPG code he wants to sell.

Release it as-is, have a forum for it, let users get on with supporting each other... And if you can be arsed to help, then fair do's! :)

Though, in any license agreement, make sure that if they use it commercially, they have to pay.

Thats the way I would go.

My advice is Keep It, Finish It, Sell The End Product.

I never have.

So then.... any artists willing to work for free until a game is finished?

I'm not bad at art. What you after? Even if it's crap, give me chance!

"I think it is probably RPG code he wants to sell. "

Nope Puki good guess but it isn't this is the source to my building generating program writing in blitz max.

Is it easy to set up a product for sale on plimus?

0.o not sure what your talking about _33

_33, yes it's pretty easy, in that you can do it in front of a PC without having to go to a lawyer.

Oh yeah.

My advice is Don't Listen To My Advice.

I never have.
