Thing is, no one goes to auction.com, they go to ebay.com. People don't buy books at books.com, but go to amazon.com.
A well-known corporate identity sets one *aside* from the generic name, which really won't add much to the company that owns it.
i was talking to the idiot about cyber squatting a few nights ago
i remember harrods or some other london shop being held to ransom cos some bright spark realised he could buy the domain without proof that he was buying it on behalf of the company (i believe the law changed due to this case)
he also managed to spin it into personalised number plates (and seeing as this is the idiot its a big event for him)
he asked
"is their a jihad number plate?" eg j1 h4d
"if the DVLA or whomever that issues licence plates in the uk DID make one, then it would be sensible that they did not sell it, or not cheap."
and surmised that if they did indeed sell it then the best place to have it would be on a battered out target practice car at some army barracks
so who would want auction.com when you could have ebay sommersby? (and all the other big art and antiques .com's)
a generic name vs a brand name
i looked up savetargetas once ... it was a front page for a domain name service, but i never looked at their price
and all the dubious domains might be snapped up by parties on the other side to stop them falling into the 'right' hands
