Selling Texture Pack

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Selling Texture Pack

Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone is interested in buying a quality texture pack.

-What kind of textures would you need?
-What technical specs would you look for? (size, format etc.)
-How many textures would make a useful pack?
-How much would you pay according to your answers to other questions?

Thanks.

The problem with many texture packs is they're not themed or complete enough. If I wanted a pack I would want it to be all in the same style and cover ALL of the needs for a given theme.

For example:
Office: Desk, chair, walls, windows, carpets, doors, warning signs, water dispenser, plants, books, computers, bins, filing cabinets etc etc etc.

So I'd have EVERYTHING I need to create an office. Further more I'd throw some low poly models in there too, just simple things like bins, water dispensers etc.

So it's actually more than 'just another set of textures'.

Formats, well, I'd want everything in PNG (or low compression jpg) 1024x1024 to start with and I'd take it from there.

How much would I pay? Probably better £50-200 depending on what's included and what the quality is like.

Speed Imagery released a pretty good texture pack. It contained alot of stuff. Cement textures, wood, metal, buildings, containers, tiles, bricks, roofs, factory exteriors, church, cable boxes, phoneboxes, construction material textures, dock textures, decking, garages, doors (various, rusted, normal, coloured, steel+more), dumper, fencing (wooden, garden, military style mesh + more), gates, windows, grates, ground textures (various road patterns that match, cobblestone etc ) tons of road signs, tons of different wall effects.

Mostly an outdoor pack, but has so much you could easily make a good proportion of a town with them. Tilable as well.

Just trying to give you an idea of what i think is a good texture pack.

I agree with rob, it needs to let the user build a whole thing, like an office as he has mentioned. Try and keep the textures neutral. Not too dark or too light, and consistant brightness/saturation throughout or your left putting textures next to each other that just don't match.

Here is a little example of what I can do.

Nice :)

Ive always wondered how those parallax maps are made, whats the secret?

Tom did a great set of textures (thousands of them, high resolution, perspective/color corrected, many were tileable), nobody bought them.

They ended up being given away for free. Consider this before you put any time/effort into it.

I am not sure there really is much of a market for it and a lot of places on the internet already offer a lot for free.

But if I were to need to buy a texture pack, then it would have to be a lot of realworld textures, not those that looks like they were made using a texture generation tool. And it would have to be as complete as possible within the choosen theme.

So for instance a forest pack would be a large selection of leaves, tree trunks, branch surface and so on. An urban pack would be various concrete walls, metal beams, windows, doors, entrances, brick walls, road surfaces, and so on.

I have no idea about how something like that would be priced, but those are the things that I would expect, should I have to pay for it.

Gfk, those were the textures i was refering too. Gave him a nice donation too :o) Cause i'm a nice guy.

Zawran, search for speedimagary.

EDIT: in fact, the site seems to have disappeared :o(

The secret, it would seem, is to buy Filter Forge and then sell the textures you create. You don't even need to change the default settings much, apparently. Does the Filter Forge license permit that? It's very generous if it does.

Hmm, i don't think that particular texture would be worth much to anyone. I can't think of what you'd use it on :o)

Go out with a camera and start taking pictures :o)

Oh what a smart guy you are? You have blown my cover and ruined my plan to get rich by selling filter forge generated textures!..

I didn't say I'm drawing them or shooting photos and making textures out of them. So please don't act as I'm trying to fool people. I'm not selling anything yet, just asking. Thanks.
