This morning my system froze and rebooted 3 times while running a B3d program. On the last occasion I got this error ...
"VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands."
I sent the report to ATI. I have the most recent drivers, win xp pro (sp2 ) , intel core 2 duo 2.33 , 2gb ram.
Does anyone else us a Radeon x1900gt and experienced this problem using b3d. If so, how did you resolve - which drivers are you using, which BIOS version / settings etc... I hear that ATI drivers are buggy but surely there is a reasonable solution.
Please bear in mind that I'm clueless with hardware issues.

I have actually been pretty biased against ATI, but decided i'd try an ATI for my current setup, because at the time it was cheaper than alternatives (That was incorrect, ta to the shop! :-( )
First card: (Note, this card was a card the shop had used to test Heatsinks, so probably not related to the quality of the hardware itself!) The initial 3750 worked fine for a few days but would reset the computer after 5-10 mins of use.
The replacement has been running just fine for about 2 weeks now, No driver issues, etc.
The only thing I worry about with ATI cards is their drivers- the drivers are solid, mostly, but when they go wrong they have the potential to completely mess things up- The first 3750 I had showed signs of accessing dangerous memory areas on the hardware- IE it would display 640x480 when I asked for 1024x768, but it'd do a wierd glitch where only the middle section of the 1024x768 would run cleanly, moving a window into the "left" or "right" side of the 1024x768 resulted in mass corruption on screen, and eventually a reset. Sadly, the card glitched a lot more after this .I did fix the problem with a driver reinstall, but the card itself played up after that problem.
back when I had an X1300, I had nothing but buggy drivers, wierd 2fps render problems where you could see it draw the window line by line, and a ton of other problems.
I have one thing to say also, My card comes with some awesome extra tools but to use them you must use the Asus drivers. Problem is that the asus drivers SUCK! uninstalling the card, booting to Safe Mode and running Driver Cleaner before restarting and reinstalling resolved those problems.
Maybe try Driver Cleaner?

I also get random MAV's and Blitcc.exe crashes which I'm hoping is related to this problem. I wish I could pay someone to fix it all for me 'cos it's seriously hampering my current development and I'm close to loosing all motivation.

then boot into normal mode and attempt reinstalling the ATI drivers
I also noted that I had to manually get the driver to install through the device manager a couple of times, CCC was installed but the system just didnt connect the drivers to the device so they didnt actually load.
I just use the driver sweeper from Guru3d to clean out drivers.

The current supported drivers are NVIDIA (Display and Chipset), ATI (Display), Creative (Sound), Ageia (PhysX), MMouse and Realtek (Sound).
All the settings are saved in an ini file. Nothing is created in the registry, so it's possible to use it as a portable program. Log files can be saved to the harddisk and viewed as well. You can find the logs under the Tools menu.

I used to get that sometimes. Many things can trigger it.
See what happens if you disable the 'VPU Recover' in the Catalyst settings.
This is a very common thing though with ATI cards - it will certainly come up in a Google search.
Maybe it's overheating. Check the heat from Catalyst while a 3D application is running. My X1950pro had this issue, it was fine while using non 3d accelerated applications but if I run a 3D application, even the simplest locks the gpu at 90 degrees celsius in 5 seconds. They sent me a new one for this problem as I didn't overlock it.
