Amiga to PC question

I`m trying to copy some old artwork, games, music etc... that I made on my old Amiga across to my PC. I no longer have access to any floppies so I need to copy them from my hard drive directly. I also have no internet connection on the Amiga so I cannot simply email them to myself.

My question is what is the best way to get the files across? Some sort of cable and software combination? If this is possible then where can I buy them from?

Also I may sell my Amiga in the future. In these days of identity theft is there a secure way to wipe my drive? I`m looking for something like the PCs DBan.

Try and make a null modem cable ( http://www.amigaforever.com/kb/3-105.html I did knnock one up my self) for the connection and amiga explorer. A search on the net may even find a free alternatives. I have found them but I can't rember what they are called.

There are some links to other suggestions at the bottom of the article too. A null modem cable and the right software should suffice, but their explanations are better than mine would be after all these years.

You don't say what model of amiga you have? If it is an A1200 then I can highly recommend the "EasyADF PCMCIA Compact Flash Transfer Kit" from amigakit.com for around £14 (you will also need a CF memcard). They were really helpful (I had problem installing mine [due to a mod I had made to my A1200 years ago]) and the kit is excellent.

My brother bought AmigaKit's EasyNet wireless networking setup, which also made things very easy, as well as letting the Amiga go online/share folders. There was a little confusion with the sharing setup, but again they were very helpful via email.

that amiga wireless card looks excellent, shame I can't find the mouse for my amiga. Time to ebay one I guess.

You could take out the hard drive, hook it to the PC (using a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter if needed) and then add it in WinUAE. Set up another hard drive using folders in WinUAE then copy everything across.

you can use an Amiga without a mouse as well. (Unfortunately my mouseport broke back in the day, and I had to do without for a few months)

AMIGA+cursor keys moves the arrow, and IIRC amiga+space or amiga+enter is a mouseclick.

I used to have MiamiTCP running Samba fileserver on my A1200 with a Cnet CN40BC PCMCIA network card, which made sharing file a charm :). Due to a bug in the PCMCIA port one had to remove the card and reinsert after the amiga was switched on, so it will recognise the card. I even had MiamiTCP dishing out IP-adresses and surfed shared the net from a peecee that way.



Back in the olden days, a friend of mine soldred a 3.5" ribbon cable onto the A1200 mobo, allowing the use of ATAPI cd-rom and a 2.5Gb IDE harddisk.

I see that amiga supplies website sells a 100gb hard drive for the 1200. That's like having infinite storage for the Amiga! My 1200 has an 80mb hd

This thread is excellent. I transferred some stuff off by disk YEARS ago but I still have some more stuff (on my A1200 80Mb HD) that I want to get off more easily. Thanks all.

How hard would it be to plug my Amiga hard drive into my PC then? Is it a pretty simple process? This is probably the easiest option for me so any further advice would be great.

I`m assuming that Amiga hard drives are pretty much the same as PC ones (probably standard) so maybe I could easily wipe it on a PC too?

I have an Amiga 1200 by the way.

I have an old 120 MB 2.5" IDE hard drive from my A1200 and a 2.5" -> 3.5" adapter, but even with several PC motherboards I never got WinUAE to recognise the drive. (It only works with 2000/XP BTW.) This is why I was so impressed with the wireless setup.

Usually the "-disableharddrivesafetycheck" flag will make WinUAE work. Your mileage may vary.

Most Amiga drives are plain IDE (excepting the really old ones.) If you have a 600 or 1200 it should be fine but you'll need an adapter because they were stocked with laptop sized drives.

Are the 2.5 > 3.5 adaptors easy to get hold of?

If I reformat the drive on a PC could I use it as extra storage space for my PC? It would prove quite handy if I could.

I remember years ago trying to get some files from my Amiga500 to PC, seems like too much hard work and as you're all saying, Amiga 1200, I never had one of those.

If I connect an Amiga formated hard drive to a PC will it still show up without running an Amiga emulator?

My version of Amiga Forever by Cloanto is quite old now. Hopefully it will still allow me to access the drive and retrieve my old Amiga work.

If it doesn`t, can I still format it on a PC somehow and then use it as a PC drive as extra storage?

Probably not -- Amiga normally uses the FFS filesystem (IIRC) which is not compatible with FAT/NTFS, and a windows PC has no native support for reading it.

You may be able to find some 3rd party drivers, but out of the box I doubt it'll work.
