Remote control

Hi all,

Besides "pc anywhere", are there any reliable remote access control software?

You won't get a usable connection over a phone line....

Careful if using VNC you need SSH to secure it (not hard to do but bear it in mind)
VNC feels very slow and clunky though, but does the job quite well otherwise.

www.logmein.com is the best one ive found so far for windows, much faster than both RDC and VNC and has an 8 bit black and white mode for slow connections (much prettier than 8 bit color).
www.nomachine.com is the best ive found for linux.

If you have a dynamic IP (usually the case) and a router then sign up for an account on www.dyndns.org its free and basically your router tell them what its current IP address each time it changes. This means to connect to your home PC you simply need to go to: yourname.dyndns.org

I use the Remote Desktop Connection built into windows all the time. Works pretty well.

At work we also use a program called remote administrator. I have no idea who makes it or what it might cost though.

I use RemotelyAnywhere here at work. Never fails me. Just ask Mitnick :).

How will we know its really him?

I have Radmin, its pretty reliable.

I use RealVNC, doesn't feel slow to me..

I use it on a LAN (100Mbit realvnc) to control my server localy and via SSH from outside, its hard to describe what i mean by slow, its plenty fast enough to control the PC but it definetely feels "seamy" and large area screen updates are laggy in comparison to others.
Strangely, when using it locally, its about the same performance as when i am comming through the SSH tunnel from the internet on a decent connection, which is a bit dissapointing.
I have used remote desktops like nomachine that almost feel like you are sat in front of it, even across the internet.

I have to second logmein. It is awesome and I use it all the time.
