Web designers

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Web designers

I am looking for something like this:
http://www.unrealtechnology.com/
http://www.truevision3d.com/
http://unity3d.com/unity/

I want videos displayed directly on the main page. I can't be more specific than that because I am not the artist. I just want something that looks good.

I have a collection of free webdesigns.
You can see them here

Dont mind the design on my page, it has none.

The webdesigns don't seem to have much 'design' either...

I did not make them.
I found them for free.

This looks like something that can easily be done if you invest in a usefull webcontent management template where you replace the site graphics with your own.
Otherwise it will cost you and not too short (a few hundred USD at least)

Those are pretty good I think. And youtube can help you displaying videos directly on your site like:

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3FygQRiEcAE&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3FygQRiEcAE&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

I want someone else to do it. That is why I am posting here.

I bet you go digging through dumpsters, too? ;)

Sorry, but just because they were free, doesn't mean they're worth having. They were free for a reason. Reason being, they're rubbish. :)

It might be easier just to buy one off of templatemonster.com

>I want someone else to do it. That is why I am posting here.

And I want 1 million €uros on my bank account and I want someone else to earn it for me!

How much man?

You a are never specific about what you want or how much you are prepared to pay for it and you call your self a businessman ;)

You really do need to specify some things, number of pages, exact functionality, page sections, purpose of site, expected cost. Whether you want a CMS or just a static site, do you want a forum? Do you want the forum skinned or just bog standard.

My work for instance charges £350 a day for development and £300 a day for design.

This site: http://eventsedinburgh.org.uk/ for instance took about 30-35 days in all (from my vague recollection) and has a custom CMS.

I presume of course that you aren't looking to pay those sort of rates and are thus posting here rather than asking a professional web design company.

A word of warning though, you pay for what you get. And just because it looks alright in a browser (which is what a lot of chop-shop companies aim for) doesn't mean that it is doing you any favours SEO wise (or extensibility wise). (i.e. invalid markup can lose you ratings in a search engine because it can't parse your content properly).

What about free news-post php ish sites? would that be on the lines of php nuke? or.. ?

I think you would need to pay someone for this job, you couldn't expect to have it for free, and have it professionally done. How much are you expecting to pay for the site built?

GFK:

I'm a mecanical Engineer, and I have a very well paid job.
I dont need to go digging through dumpsters!!!

Some like the designs some don't. The people I made pages for seems to like the design.

I use them cause I'm not a designer, and this ways is an easy way to get designs for webpages.

None of the style sheets seem to be loading/working when you view those pages with Firefox.

I think this is what Gfk was talking about.

[edit1]
They don't appear to work correctly with Opera either.

[edit2]
It's because you've used a backslash in the link URLs
ie...
<a href="1024px\index.html">
...instead of...
<a href="1024px/index.html">

Yan:

You may be right, I only checked them in IE.

I'll take a look when I get back home.

I'm a freelance web designer/developer and can help you out, but would need to know what your budget for the project is before I provide a proposal.

Some of my work examples are:

http://www.crushedapple.co.uk - design and back end CMS
http://www.advance.tv - Converted the design to CSS and developed the back end CMS
http://www.kerching.com/games/ - converted the design to CSS and developed the back end online games management system.

Some of my concept designs also include:

As for using general template sites like TemplateMonster.com, their designs may look pretty, but most are constructed poorly. Last time I looked at a Template Monster template, it was constructed purely in tables and was hard to alter for my own needs and was cluttered with so much code, the content was useless for the search engines. With my CSS skills, I can ensure that you can keep your content separate from your design, allowing your website to be appealing to visitors and readable by search engines.

With both design and development skills, I can deliver solutions that are both visually and functionally professional. If you would like to speak further, e-mail leon ---at--- nextpoint [dot]co[dot]uk .

I don't want to offend, but none of those sites are properly constructed either. None of the markup or CSS validates.

Thats the hard thing about web development. Theres so many things to try and master. Generally you can find people who have masterd coding, (not just being able to code but doing it properly) or people who can do fantastic designs. Finding ones who can do both is more of a rarity.

Game Boy has some very professional looking designs, and in reality thats all that ends up mattering to the customer. Generally they dont concern themselves with validated markup or proper design practices.

I don't want to offend, but none of those sites are properly constructed either. None of the markup or CSS validates.

No offence taken, but I just because they don't validate doesn't mean that they are not properly constructed. Not all budgets and deadlines will allow for having the time to validate all code - a professional website will run across all the main browsers, yet code that validates will not necessarily be compatible with all browsers. Testing for cross browser compatibility takes much time and is a much more higher issue. Here are some sites that don't validate either:

http://www.apple.com
http://www.microsoft.com - Well, nothing they do works properly anyway...
http://www.nintendo.com
http://www.sega.com
http://www.google.com/
http://www.facebook.com
http://www.blitzbasic.com/ - You couldn't say Mr Sibly can't code ;-)

All very big companies and no less professional. Ultimately it's the impact and strategical maintenance that can be achieved within the limitation boundaries of a project that that will dictate how a website will be delivered. I guarantee I could deliver the best and most advanced website the world has has ever seen - if I had infinite time, budget and creative freedom to complete it ;-).

My sites are tested on Internet Explorer, FireFox and Safari - this alone doubles the amount of time to convert a design into a website. In addition, this can also cause validation errors because XHTML/CSS formatting that validates and should work properly by W3C standards don't display properly in IE - meaning more time has to be spent to figure out a method that is both valid and works, which is not possible to do in many budgets.

In addition to this, my XHTML and CSS is set to be efficient, allowing for a robust design that can be updated at a later date as well as loading fast and being more accessible to search engines because design is kept separate from content.

I think this is what Gfk was talking about.

<snip>
Yeah, that. I never use IE7 any more. FF and occasionally Safari.

The big question is how much?

The big question is how much?

Is that how much to create a website? Couldn't answer that from the information I have at the moment. What I would need to know is:

* Is it just a template design that is wanted or a full website?
* If a whole website, how many pages?
* Does content need to be written - or will it be provided?
* Will it require flash animations?
* How is the site meant to be used? Will there be features such as a newsletter sign up?

Other issues such as what landing pages for search engines will be used.

The other way is like I suggested, in which a budget is proposed and I could propose a solution that will fit within the budget.

Just my 2 cents: If a web site for a gaming technology is not done in Flash or does not contain properly done Flash content, it's about as interesting as last week's news. And so are template-based websites or pages that stink of the Content Management System they were made with.

And here is the biggest thing for me: Put pictures of the PEOPLE behind the product on the page. I hate faceless, anonymous companies.

I hate flash, slow.

Pure flash sites are really bad for search engines and usability. You cant bookmark pages (costing you sales), search engines cant read them (costing you sales), are slow to load (costing you sales) and you cant have landing pages to direrct specific traffic to (costing you sales). The best thing to do is to have a html css website and have flash elements or make use of javascript. Javascript can do most things flash can do these days - look on Google for Mootools demo.

Halo will never provide you with specifics, he does not know, what he wants is someone to do it all for free and present him finished product that he will use without saying even thanks. A busnisman who is not prepared to invest, baaah! ;)

Josh provided 3 examples, stated "I can't be more specific than that", and you guys are STILL giving him a hard time. Any web designer worth their salt would read his post, email him and find out what needs to be done.

This is so not the place to ask for web design help :).

Yeah I don't understand the bashing here. If you aint gonna offer to make the website, what is the point in fueling this thread with fire?

I asked "how much" ? and I mean, what is your real budget?

The company I work for, and the team (of two) I lead, have been developing a php based content management system. Much akin to Joomla, just without the crap!

I have a feeling the design would be beyond the budget, as our cheapest websites of late has been above the 4 - 5 thousand mark.

The content management works with a plugins/applications(similar to facebook) style infrastructure, so anything can be designed and bolted on to your site now, then and in the future.

I asked "how much" ? and I mean, what is your real budget?

Well, I can generally create a design and convert it to XHTML/CSS for £250. A 5 page website would cost from £499. I have also been developing my own CMS which is totally customisable in which I can provide as part of a more advanced solution.

Game Boy, your sites might work in Internet Explorer, FireFox and Safari... but do they work in Opera? If they do, you're a legend in my book ;)

Most of my sites work in Opera - only the ones where the deadline hasn't allowed me to. The Crushed Apple one certainly works in Opera. I test this because I mainly use Opera for web browsing :-)

Tri|Ga|De, I was hoping you were going to fix your site so it worked in Firefox. I want to look at the designs you have there, but no way am I opening that trash known as IE. :)

Perhaps you could do it in HTML? I'm sure it would be cheaper to find an HTML coder and although it isn't as high tech, you can still get a quality site with excellent design.

My homepage isn't too too bad... I've heard complaints on the color scheme and that there's too much text, but its very organized, which is the key to good design...

Now that I'm thinking about it I should add more pictures (primarily of myself/my life)... Winni makes a good point about the creepiness of a "faceless" website...

I prefer phpnuke.

Taskmaster:

Its fixed now. Try it in firefox now

Everyone complaining that no cost is given:

Josh has given you 3 examples of the kind of site he wants to develop and I'm sure will give more detail over e-mail.

Personally I almost always avoid giving a figure of what I'm prepared to pay for something like this because otherwise all you get is a quote for a bit more than that. You might as well say to the vendor "I've got this much money in my pocket, how about I give you all of it?".

Let the supplier know what they need to achieve and let them quote adequately for it is a much better way.

The only time I've stated how much I'm going to pay is when I'm budget constrained and looking to only pay a fixed rate for a very specific requirement. e.g. some years ago I had six very nice animated models done for £50 each by a forum member here.

Darkheart

Well all that was given was some static page designs which he likes. There was no mention on how he would like to update the site? What he would like the site to do? Does he want the ability to do SEO stuff? Does he want contact forms? Does he want commenting, galleries, product showcasing, member accounts, software updates management and so on...

If its just a simple html template then your looking at a very low budget. If your looking at anythign a REAL website will have then the more you add the more it costs.

So knowing the budget is a good way to know the scale of the site.

So perhaps knowing a budget range like:
- below £500
- £1000 - £2000
- £above £3000

And some more details on what the site should do.

this is not a place to look for webdesigners

this is not a place to look for webdesigners

You would be surprised at what people do on here. I originally intended to be a games developer, but ended up using the skills I learnt via Blitz to get into web design and development. Designing and developing websites has many similarities to deisgning games.

Well it depends on who you're asking to do the job. Some unethical people will just take your money for the sake of it, whereas more ethical people will identify what is achievable with your budget. Personally, I'd rather know what someones budget is for a website so that I wouldn't scare them by proposing a full solution with a full price; a smaller budget can afford a smaller website, in which can generate revenue to re-invest back into the website to upgrade it at a later date to increase the profitability.

I find it funny how halo never gets what he asks for/wants (probably just me).
