Retro gaming books?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Retro gaming books?

Can anybody recommend some cool retro gaming books?

I've got "Masters of Doom" (my favourite retro book), "The Making of Doom 3" , "Arcade Fever" and "The Ultimate History of Games", and I'd like some more along similar lines.

I'm interested mainly in arcade games, Spectrum , C64 , Amiga and PC.

Is the Half Life 2 book "Raising the Bar" any good?

cheers

EVERY coder should have a copy of 'Graphics Programming Black Book Special Edition' - period.

"Graphics Programming Black Book Special Edition" - this for experience coder, not beginner coder!

Game Programming All in one Second Edition is very good and allergo programming language is easy to learn. It got about 6 games sample in the books I think.

Game Over by David Sheff is a great little history of Nintendo -- prices kinda vary:

I read a copy that came free with some magazine, but it's a really good read.

This is probably even more up your street, and another great read:

Ah, just remembered I've got that one! Excellent book that is.

"Game Over"

Got that one as well, quite a good read.

The programming black book

A bit too code-oriented, I'm more interested in the back-stories behind games and seeing all the old retro games and their hardware etc...

The Encyclopedia of Game Machines

That looks good so I've just ordered it, thanks very much!

The Rise and Fall of Commodore

I'm really tempted to order that...I had a C64 and Amiga through that period of time so I could probably remember much of what happened. Might get that book, cheers.

Also ordered -
Play Britannia: The History of Computer Gaming in the UK
The Video Games Guide
Smartbomb: The Quest for Art, Entertainment, and Big Bucks in the Videogame Revolution
Digital Retro: The Evolution and Design of the Personal Computer

Going to have lots of great reading to do!!!

It's no book, but....

Please Sir - how do I become a member of your library?

EVERY coder should have a copy of 'Graphics Programming Black Book Special Edition' - period.

If you are interested in 'Masters of Doom' then this book will compliment the technical side.

The book is free to download:

Yes, it is a technical book - yes, much is outdated. However, there are many chapters that document the development of Quake.

If Christians have a bible, then Coders have this - period.

Wow, that's a lot of chapters!!!

Thanks Puki, downloading them (all!) now. I've read some of Abrash's Quake stuff before on a website and it was really interesting, so this looks like a good read.

It even has a chapter on "pushing the 286"!!! What a blast from the past :)

By the way Puki - your email address is MichaelAbrash@...?

Talking about Doom as retro makes me feel old.

Me too...

I tend to think of retro as pre-pc games, infact anything pre-solid textured 3D really.

Yes, when I first started with PCs, they only had monochrome, text displays. :/

Well, a really expensive one could do CGA GFX, but that wasn't much better. :P
