These forums have 415700 posts (not including language manual areas), makes me wonder what it costs to keep this place running fast..
Wow, quite the server..
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Wow, quite the server.. Ive wondered how much space this site takes up.
SomethingAwful forums have 58 MILLION posts. And people pay to use it, sounds crazy.
You paid to use this one too, don't forget.
That's true.
Data storage isn't that expensive. Traffic is.

Probably not that much, text isn't exactly a disk space killer.

WOAH! and I thought the ubuntu forums were huge!

(As long as you host the server your self.)

I've free bandwidth on my webhost so no problem as well.
The funny thing is that a few hours after the start of this thread, the board became highly unresponsive for a few hours *hehe*
As well this boards reduces its load by not allowing image avatars (hosted here or outside) and the like.

It probably doesn't cost much to host this site, I could host it easily on my powweb space with a standard contract.

Anyone know a good colocation site in Sweden?

Strangely enough, actual hosting here in sweden is expensive.
However,
It doesnt cost anything to host a site yourself, ie; use a linux/apache (or windows/apache) webserver and dyndns (www.dyndns.org) to resolve your non static IP.
Except the power bill of course :)
(..and windows license if used)
Dont know if a home brew would handle large forum traffic though, i would have thought so :/

Get a good enough server and it can, we have a dell PowerEdge 2500 that we got for free. Currently only have a hl2dm server running on it, pretty fast for free ;P
D4NM4N. There's a huge difference in hosting a server at home or in a data center. I prefer the latter :-).
^^
Agree, I have 4 Racks drawing 16Amps each, I wouldn't put them anywhere that didn't have full fire suppression and a bundle of security.

Lol, So do i. :)I thought he meant just a simple website/forum, which is quite possible from home. For a full-on 99.9% reliable biz site needing that kind of power then its probably not the best idea.
