Ideal configuration for "Ultimate Vista"

What would be an ideal pc configuration of "Windows Ultimate Vista" to run database application?

Normally one would run a database on a server, not a desktop, so vista wouldn't even be in the picture...

Fast Core 2 Duo + metric crapload of RAM are the most important. Depending on the size of the DB you'll be dealing with you may want a fast (10K RPM) HD as well.

Other things such as video card and the likes are not really important for a non-gaming system, especially if you don't care about running aero.

Turning off Aero and just using windows classic improves system preformance.

And a RAID setup (mirroring) would be very wise.

I thought the ideal configuration for Vista was a machine with XP on it instead...

I'd tend to opt for Q6600 and max out the Vista rating like this and good memory, a decent graphics card (midrange level is enough, but a Nvidia 8800GT would be great). Surprizingly, a setup of that sort won't set you up for over 1000$.

What Grey Alien said. Depending on what database we're talking, chances are fairly good it's not going to work on Vista anyhow.

The most important thing is to make sure every component is Vista Certified by the WHQL, because even though Microsoft is lying through their teeth about which hardware "works" with Vista, you still get support for said hardware, and chances are better than average it'll work eventually.

A desktop database app? How about the same configuration as for a normal Vista installation?

It should be a Dual Core CPU with at least 2 GB RAM -- not because of the database app, but because of Vista.

Whoa that's one flashy database.

If you can afford the hardware to run vista, you can easily afford the hardware and XP OS, so why not just use that, more stable potentially. Do VISTA in a couple of years when its stable and cheaper....
