Vista SP1 - Where to find it?

hi!
the first service pack for vista has been released today and will be delivered via windows update in exaclty a month.
can anybody here please show me a downloadlink on the M$-homepage for the final service pack? i'm sure it is there somewhere, but i just cant find it.
ps: need it in german language and x86., because my system is installed on these settings

As far as I can see, the only way you can get it without paying an expensive subscription to Technet or something, is to rebuy it. Vista with SP1 is available to buy from Amazon.

check out the optional downloads to windows update and make sure that you checked the "show beta software" checkbox as well.

chances that it otherwise will appear are little as it most likely is another beta after the problematic initial start weeks ago.

in news i read that it would be manually downloadable via microsoft from 18.march and from 18.april it will be a windows default update.
why can't i download it from MS?

Service Packs for Windows are usually available first to full MSDN subscribers after beta tests.

This was the case with XP SP2. Microsoft announced it was available but only (for the time being) to MSDN Subscribers. The release came for everyone and via windows updates about a week later.

Just wait a bit and it'll be available.

why are they available to a special group of people only? if it is the final version, there aint gonna be any changes or will there?

It came bundled with my Vista Home Basic yesterday. On CD.

Well they have to dupe people into paying for MSDN subcriptions somehow.

IIRC, MS staggers the releases of new updates via the "auto update" to keep their servers from being overloaded.

Well, I don't need to do a full install again as I made an image of the partition before formatting and installing XP.

Just spent the last hour and a half downloading and installing it. Haven't managed to find a single difference yet.

stability only shows itself when it isnt there. it's like when your mother is on a vacation and your house is untidy and you notice that she isnt there for you...
bedides: moving and copying files via network or local, from vista to not-vista is 20%-40% faster now!

I'm going to try network stuff later on when I switch my XP system on. Because that was slow before.

Yup. You're not exaggerating either. I'm getting roughly a 500% increase when copying from Vista to XP too.

Copying/moving/deleting files is pretty much instant now, too. You don't get a 'busy' cursor for 20 seconds before something actually happens.

There seems to be a fair amount of file handling and network stuff fixed which no previous updates have even attempted to address.

Overall it does feel much smoother to use.

Ok! After faffing about for an hour making backup images of my XP Partition I've gone ahead after that and used a backup image of vista and have restored it to my partition.

Installation of the service pack (which came not as 1 big update but as several updates) took about 20 minutes with downloading other stuff also.

Vista now seems to be running very fast. Infact, it does operate faster after the Service Pack was installed.

The major difference I'm seing is that it doesn't appear to be battering my system of it's resources. Before (even when the PC was idle and with no apps open) it would churn away at my CPU causing the fan to spin louder and louder.

It doesn't seem to do that now.

Fingers crossed that this will address the other issues I had also. WIll test some more though.

[edit] Also, having been using XP for the last 2 months Vista seems to run faster now with the service pack than XP does. Just noticing a big improvement in speed which is good.

I'm convinced they do this to catch out the pirates. Realise a ropey OS, then make it work properly with the service pack :o) Good to hear it's working better!

yep, get the pirates to beta test it for you, Msoft are savvy.

Vista SP1 is now available via Windows Update. 60MB download compared to the 450MB five-language version.

Tried it on my laptop - it froze at 15%, so I reset the machine and it then froze at 26%. Ubuntu is now on it :)

My car broke down. I now use a wheelbarrow out of spite.

Funny how it installs perfectly for most people but not for others.

I take it you have a legit version of Windows Vista?

SP1 is the nice SP that makes sure that on machines with several different security solutions, you won't be able to do anything anymore ... thanks to the changes in the security stuff and the slowness of the security solution creators.

There is no reason for SP1 above that. It does not make Vista faster if you hope that or add something usefull.
It was benchmarked already during the beta and it is still 50-100% slower than XP SP2.
So the wait for the real users not the regular "clicky homer user" fraction goes on till 09 / 10 when SP2 will be released and Vista gets fast enough to compete with XP SPx ... thought I'm not sure that this will ever happen, chances that Windows 7 is release before this happens to Vista is far larger

GfK: Well if you think that I am missinformed or incorrect, I'm happy to know the benchmarks that show the difference.
Sure, Vista isn't as bad as its reputation. But it is definitely no successor to XP as well as its performance wise at best on the same performance. For dedicated users (-> devs, gamers etc) it tends to be more problematic than XP as well as it does a lot of stuff invisibly without notifying you of it.
In cases it notifies you, ie UAC, it notifies you of A but can do A and B which is not acceptable as well. Its the common Microsoft "hide away theoretically important stuff" behavior. I wouldn't have a problem if this was default for regular user, but I as dev assume that I can at least tell it to either show everything or just die.
That the 32bit DLL emulation of Vista64 is broken is nothing new, you get access violations on stuff that works fine on Vista32 bit and the like. (Vista64 was meant to be the first true 64bit system by Microsoft as it originally was meant to be the first EFI capable system by them. Both didn't happen and won't happen to the end user market on the MS end until Windows 7 at least)

The worst thing about Vista to me as notebook user is that Vista cuts your accu runtime to 50-70% of what XP is capable of (on my X41t which is Vista Capable the runtime dropped to 3hours 38 from 6hours 14 on wifi connected idle thats NO small difference, thats just horror and shows that someone at MS definitely smoked some quite bad shit when implementing the process scheduling, idle handling etc. with normal internet usage and BlitzMax programming in blide, Vista Business died down after 2h 10 while XP Tablet 2005 lasted for nearly 5h. Vista was Aero Basic, not Glass)


Just to point that out: I've used any academic MSDN version of Vista since the first accessable pre-Alpha. They all performed very well and very similar to XP especially if not better. The performance drop didn't start till the moment the integrated the Aero core parts in the last beta or the like. I don't think that it is Aero that causes that on SM3 capable hardware but the new driver model which was never tested before that, at least given the fact that most drivers even now, a year past launch are still trash compared to their XP comrades.
I actually planned to have at least a second installation just for Vista until the last Beta and the RCs came where the performance died down and the compatibility of quite some of my system components just vanished.
I still do periodical reinstalls to check the situation (every few months) and compare XP SP2 to the most updated Vista Version + driver version and I will surely join the group of happy Vista users the day I am happy with its performance (at least in the 90 - 95% range of XP SP2 performance AND compatibility. As long as my linksys wireless PCI card does not work its just useless to me, don't plan to wire my desktop all the time just for Vista. Same goes for my Bluetooth component in my notebook. Its an Compal EL80, an Intel Reference Model for CoreDuo. If Vista can't fully support that, what can it do then?!).

Stop pushing Vista threads outside of MS boards if you don't like more objective comments on why Vista is NO successor, just an alternative to Windows XP. (its not more stable, not more performant nor more compatible, so nothing of the 3 elemental things to an OS are met for a successor).

As owner of a NVIDIA card, I've DX10 capability on Windows XP already (cg 2.0), so not even DX10 is a reason for it.

I never could tell why people hated Vista. I haven't encountered any problems with it yet. In fact, it runs every application and game I've tried installing on it without a problem except Duke Nukem 3D, but I got a patch to fix that. On my comp it looks nice and runs fast, so I really get annoyed by most of this Vista bashing.

I run Vista at the office, but am holding off on getting the sp1 for right now. Maybe in another month or so once it hits the WindowsUpdate -- after all, given all that can go wrong with a service pack, I'd rather have a bunch of other people be the guinneapigs first...

(The first time I installed XP SP2 on my machine I ended up in -perpetual-bluescreen-land requiring a full reinstall of windows)

Me neither. I would say that they tried it with bum drivers,incompatible software or hardware not upto scratch (e.g. propriety machines that were on sale with XP one week and the same model runnig Vista the next or hardware that passed itself off as Vista compatible)

For what its worth, I've installed SP1 on two PCs now - one desktop and a laptop. On both there were no problems whatsoever. Nothing to report except speed improvements everywhere.

Its only 60mb. Whichever way you dress it up, that's not 'huge'. If you're with a crap pay-as-you-go ISP, find a new one.

well i wasnt being exactly specific about windows vista (as i dont have it nor know the size of the dl) but id hate to get a bigish (mandatory) dl coming up on me without warning when ive got the equivilant of 50p's free credit ;)

NTL/virgin media threatened to send the balifs round to pick up my non existant set top box after sending me a few bills for stuff and i never actually signed up for ntl just made an inquiry (didnt know if land lord would allow ntl seeing as the phone was out of the question for some reason another 2 rooms got ntl so must be a daft land lord reason)

In most of the world it's not the ISP that charges you money for your connection, but your phone company. Outside of the US there's precious few places that will give you free local phonecalls. It all adds up.

The 400MB download is the multi-language version. The smaller version in Windows Update, is not multi-language.
