Actually, ask him if he can convert the max stuff to obj or 3ds - then either update his site with new links or just update the original links to include the new files.

He's got textures in there that are over a quarter of a gigabyte each. That's why the downloads are huge.
The shield pack has 9 textures that weigh in at over half a GB combined - 602 MB.

I think it's for editing purposes. Uncompressed and big textures make it easy to work with them and create good quality modified textures. Took me a while to download a texture pack, just to look at them of course.
