Microsoft has released the specs needed for running their next O/S, Windows Vienna ..

Seriously though .. that's one serious amount of power there

Nah, They'll need 10 of those to run Vienna. ;)

Blue balls?

How can they know this early?

That was a really interesting article (and nothing to do with Windows) thanks.

Cool those ideas of human brain extentions are comming along nicely just imagine being able to store every memory playback your favourites and Store them on blueray for your every day pleasure

Beware for if they stray to far from the path even 100 Sarah Connor's wont be able to stop the onslaught :)

Despite having 22.8 trillion operations per second to play with, this processing grunt only equates to 1 cubic mm of Rat brain!

So if my brain runs at 9999999999 trillions operations per second. Why am I so rubbish at maths and remembering things?

The error checking in the human brain is rubbish!

Not really.
But the brain is a master at visual filtering, visual pattern recognition and the like ... and it does that at a speed and a precision that can not even be nearly emulated, especially not in such an "open" way with full 3d etc

as well, our brain, the "ape" brain, is even more special as it is the only brain capable of 3d at all so its a hell more complex and capable than most animal brains which are pure 2D

LOL!

just cos it can compute complex numbers dont mean that it can

what i mean is
uninstall caclulator and excel (and other spread sheets and similar) from your pc and without programming languages try and get it to add up

C:\1+2
syntax error
C:\

im shite at maths cos i dont have a decent caculator program built in and i cant afford the time to study for an upgrade ;)

edit:
and on a side note a phone conversation (that i should have recorded) with an idiot 'mate' highlighted the gap between our knowledge and gave me an excuse to ridicule him quite alot (not in an im smarter than you condecending way but in my own you had to be there way)

none of us are born able to speak our native languages
like learning a second language it takes time, thanfully this is done with parental and family interaction whilst still a baby and latter in the early parts of school where we are learning far quicker than in later life
the rest of europe seems to be more bilingual than just thier language and english but also a second or third european language, this ive been told is mostly due to the education system you HAVE to know a second language, where as in the uk i had french or french and i stopped learning that the day they gave me an opt out
myself id rather have learnt german cos i lived their for a bit as an army brat and left without knowing how to say anything seeing as i was in a little england near the army base.

now this 'mate' whom i normally refer to as 'the idiot' is allegedly moving to belgium and has already taken a 2 year gcse night class (ontop of what he may have taken at school) but his grasp is still crap ... discussing colouors and our way of defining them the original
"why do i see blue" ended in
"actually its not blue its dinosaur"
so i asked him to translate random colours for me
he failed miserably and as hes a driver looking for continental long distance based in belgium it would be a bit hard if hes to
"take the orange box off the green pallet from the blue lorry" if he has no idea what orange green and blue are in french (or dutch if he goes to the northern part) hes screwed

i did also in the early stages due to a running joke @ work (where he also used to work) ask him to explain to me (as if i had no idea what one was) what a lady boy was
the silence was deafening
"see <workmates name>" was his response

so i gave him the quick description and then said
"what is a lady boy"
"mr winkie erm women"
he couldnt even read back to me what id just told him FFS

Nah, They'll need 10 of those to run Vienna. ;)
Did you look at the article Amon?

Depending what you mean by calculations, it can be misleading. It seems to be a realistic physical simulation of the brain, with proteins and cells and whatnot moving around and interacting. I'm assuming this is what the calculations are working out, how that stuff will interact, rather than 1 computer calculation = 1 'neural' calculation.

Fortunately for us, "God's processor" is infinite :)

Yeah I did see the article and the computer is impressive.

I just take any chance to make a dig at M$ new operating systems after having to suffer Vista for a year.

:)

why is windows so much like the opposite of mores law
the faster cheaper and bigger the pc gets
the slower and larger the opperating system

do we really need an os to come on a dvd ffs?
copy move delete and other basic disc/disk tools fit nicely into a single floppy with command.com

3.11 was half a dozzen or so floppies (ok it was also from what i remember dog ugly)
95 a cd rom out of necessity but the first step on a slippery slope to filling the disc with each release.

All this 'human brain emulation' got me thinking (->pun<-) ..

Assuming they manage to replicate how the brain works, will the computer become self-aware?
Will it have the will power to survive and adapt by itself?
Will it have understanding and compasion?
If you switched the PC off will you be accused of murder?

Ultimately, thats what separates us from the chips
We are not just 'number crunching' machines

The way things are heading though, I envision a future where the government, politicians, and beurocrats hand over decision making responsibilites to the computers ..

Crook: "Any chance of Parole?"
Officer: "Let me check ..... The computer says NO!"

Mind, you, we already have powerful enough computers to emulate the brains of some of the political figures out there. It's called a Zx81

If it does become self aware (which I doubt) they can just alt+ctrl+delete, that or just pull the plug.

EDIT: I think governments like USA will keep humans deciding important things, like if someone is guilty of a crime or not.

It all depends on how we see ourselves as a race.

Windows Vienna = Windows 7... Correct?

Mind, you, we already have powerful enough computers to emulate the brains of some of the political figures out there. It's called a Zx81

HAHAHA!

Mind, you, we already have powerful enough computers to emulate the brains of some of the political figures out there. It's called a Zx81

How dare you insult a classic computer by comparing it too a polictician. Besides a ZX81 is way to powerful. Try using the word "abacus".
