To people running XP on a standard Macbook
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/To people running XP on a standard Macbook
Please could someone try downloading the following game demo and tell me what sort of framerates that you are getting running XP on a standard Macbook (bootcamp). I really want to know if the GMA 950 can even run this type of 2D in 3D game.
here`s the link,
http://www.x-pressive.com/SpriteCandy/and the game itself is,
BLASTEROIDS DELTA
the framerate is displayed in the top right corner. I really need to know the speed in both windowed and fullscreen modes.
Thanks to anyone who can try this for me,
Jason.
Are you sure thats the right link? That is sprite candy library for Blitz3d :)
Yes it is the correct one. Go to downloads and then find the Blasteroids .exe game. The game itself is using Sprite Candy :)
I want to know if I can develop games on a standard Macbook using this library and Blitz 3D (under WinXP\Bootcamp) or whether it will prove to much for a standard Macbook to handle. As this game is a pretty intensive test of Sprite Candy I thought that it would be the best thing to try out.
I have heard that Vista runs quite well though on a Macbook with all 3D effects enabled so I`m still quite hopeful that the GMA 950 may be able to cope with Sprite Candy too.

Runs fine here (40+fps)... on a Mac Mini running XP on Parallels (virtual machine).
The Mac Mini has a GMA 950, 1 gig ram, and I think 2ghz core 2 duo, which I believe is comparable to current Macbooks.
its even weaker than the current MacBooks which have an X3100 :)
The Mac Mini is the weakest Intel Mac available.
How about through bootcamp? I`m assuming that Parallels isn`t going to be fast as running Windows natively?
Jason.
How about through bootcamp?
I imagine it would indeed run faster natively.
On my PC the demo runs at a couple of hundred FPS and I have a pretty old graphics card, a Geforce4TI 4600. How does the GMA 950 compare to that? Is the GMA 950 still weaker as it is integrated?
As Sprite Candy is 2D in 3D I assume that this is an issue. How well does BMax work under Windows on a Mac (again via bootcamp)? I know that it works great under OSX but that is using OpenGL, how does it fair when running in DirectX mode in Windows?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Jason.
BM runs better in OpenGL than DX7 simply because DX7 didn't life long enough as "3D API" so its drivers were never optimized enough. OpenGL thought is, as DX9, the current gen API and got optimized for years.
-> Max2D runs 20-100% faster on OpenGL than on DX7 with a real 3D card (ATI - NVIDIA)
OK. Thanks everyone for the help :)
Jason.
