I'm fast running out of excuses NOT to buy one.

I love my Eee, but I run XP SP2 on it. It runs my favorite emulators just fine so I can play my retro games, plus I do a lot of development on it.

I dont think it will be bigger will it? the original had room for a 9" too didnt it? - as it had that massive border round the 7"

I wouldnt reccommend installing XP on a solid state, the constant swapping will kill it much faster (unless there is a way to turn off the VM - i think there is :/).
Personally I would try for Xubuntu with no-swap as my choice i read somewhere that someone has got it working.

I think it's very slightly larger overall, but hardly enough to notice.

I've also heard, that one of the best ways to get XP onto it is to put everything on a SDHC card, the downside is that it has to stay in if you want XP, but at least the internal solid state isn't hammered.

I am guessing you can boot from a SDHC then?

I didn't have a choice. Since all the software I use is only for Windows, it would have been a paperweight if I left Xandros on it.

XP runs quite fast, and game speeds are impressive. I always use a custom XP install and keep NT executive paging disabled which cuts down on the paging. The swap file is set at a permanent size.

The lifespan of SSDs are rated longer than most hard drives. So I am not too worried.

Yes, you can also boot from a USB drive.

so in theory my knackered 4gb mp3 player that had to be reformatted via my clasic xbox thus killing all mp3 playing software could be a boot drive (assuming it doesnt knacker out again)

so for example could an ipod
not only could it still be a 160gb mp3 player but a boot disk too

In theory, but not all USB devices are bootable.

on some dodgy reboots my pc tries booting from my usb modem
mind you its probably trying the "cd" aspect of it where the install software was
