File sharing Vista (wirrless)

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/File sharing Vista (wirrless)

hi guys

I have had a laptop for a few months as well my my desktop.. i download a lot of music and general code sampes etc, sometimes when I am on my laptop others when on the desktop.

got feed up of having to transfer the files from 1 to the other via USB stick so thought id see about this file sharing thing.

Both laptop and desktop are wireless... connected to DLink ADSL router.

So I gave them a comman workgroup name "skynet", set 'network discovery' and 'fileshareing' ON in network and sharing center.

Right clicked and shared a random folder on my desktop and laptop alowing 'guest' users.
I can share files fine like this..... but ..... because its an open network any 1 on wireless can see the files too.

Is there a way I can set a password to my shared folders? Theres an option to set 'Password protected sharing' but I have to make new user accounts? which i dont quite get.

Can any 1 enligthen me to my plight?

Scrap that, mis understood! :)

If you have a password on your account on your Vista setup, it 'should' prompt you for the password.. It did it automatically on mine, so when I'm upstairs and want to access my main laptop downstairs (remote), I have to enter my account password for the remote account before it gives me access.

ah.. ok... i dont have password protected profiles on my laptop or desktop.. so if i do set a password it should ask me that... ill try that when i get home.
