Futuremark WTF?!?

http://kotaku.com/362753/pwnage-tm

I'm all for this... maybe I should copyright all misspellings in the hope that people will stop using such bastardisations of the language.

This is all getting very silly.

I should copyright all misspellings

That reminds me of the Prankster, who copyrighted the alphabet in the Superman comics.

And in the real world Superman killed Captain Marvel with a copyright infringement suit.

from reading most of the posts it seems that perhaps they are making a game called pwned or one of its variants

just like halo is a brand name for microsoft
its still a word found in the dictionarry*
so now no one else can make a game or book called halo (unless licenced) cos people would think it was based within the halo universe

pwned might not unless its an interwebified dictionarry of l337
but it is a common word

we still say photoshopped even if we use psp or gimp
we still hoover up the place even with a dyson

*i cant spell (one of the reasons i was kicked out of the magic circle) is dictionarry one or two r's?
cos im reading Diction 'arry diction ;)

May i ask what it means (maybe i'm getting old)?

pwnage is a typeo of ownage (from own)
p and o (not to be confused with the ferry company) are next to each other on the keyboard and you might get p instead of o if you are a bad typeist or just not paying attention

also do we still use the word xerox for photocopiers anymore?

edit:
on a side note my brother still calls snickers marathons
afaik it was introduced by mars to the uk underthat name as they spent along time sponsoring the london marathon and it might have changed around the time flora took over the mantle

jif vs jif (now cif)
dont forget the pancakes on jif lemon day
just remember to NOT use the cleaning agent
thier advert heralding the name change was 'because no one in europe could say Jif so they all called it cif' and we are too
wearas i often wonder how many A&E cases there are over shrove tuesday due to idots and the wrong bottle ;)

wwf vs wwf
panda vs hulk hogan

Talking of Snicker/Marathon... apparently someone's found a Wipsa bar (discontinued) down the back of their sofa and flogged it on Ebay for 200 notes.

No 'cos Marathon's were around a long time before the London Marathon.Wiki suggests it was just global standardisation but I like to think it's 'cos it rhymes with knickers

This is why "intellectual property" is bad.

Something tells me Mustang is unlikely to get involved in this thread...

i cant remember when i first saw marathon bars but i remember mars doing the london marathon for ages (but never really bothered finding out who made what coccie bars to put 1 + 1 together re marathon/mars)
and im sure wagon wheels (moon pies iir in the states) got smaller as i got older (and not just cos my hands were bigger ... reminds me of a jerremy beadle joke)

Wow! Talk about blowing something way out of proportion. Registering a trademark doesn't give you ownership of a word. It is merely a way of protecting the name of a particular product or brand. It doesn't stop anybody using the word. Hell, it doesn't even stop someone using the the word as the name of their own product as long as the new product is in a seperate market. This is simply media scare mongering and public ignorance.

If you wanted you could make a computer game called Pepsi, and call the main character Pepsi. As long as the game had nothing to do with cola, and you don't use any of Pepsi's logos, you are totally in the clear. Unless, of course, Pepsi have already registered their Trademark in the video game sector.

I think Wispas are back now. I went to spain end of november last year and the airport had hundreds of them. Haven't seen anywhere else selling them though :(

yep wispas were... back but seem to have vanished again. a publicity stunt chockie bat throwback who would have though it.

But any way, back on thread - I was racing a mustang 2+2 on PGR2 just, jolly good fun to, just got the replay runnin over and to foo fighters. lush.

It's not so much "too many trademarks" as the choice they have made.

Pwnage? C'mon, that just ridiculous.

words that are trade marks (or company names)

whispa (although its not spelt whisper)
mars (god of war / planet)
windows (double glazing would be out of the question if this was totally enforcable "pilkinton windows" wont run office no matter what i try)
everest (name of a mountain and (non software ;) ) windows competitor)
halo (biblical references aplenty)
marathon (greek place name / sport)
zoom (what cameras do)
shell (what crustations (sp) have)

none of those words are barred from use by joe blogs except for product naming

and their was a pop duet called pepsi and shirlie and iir pepsi cola didnt go after them
speaking of which im surprised they havnt gone after (north or south) korea due to thier flag bearing a startling resemblance to thier logo ;)

So silly it STILL has to be an advertising ploy.

well it got us taling about it ;)

It's still a bloody horrible name for a game. What's going to be bundled with the Gold Edition? A Hoodie with "Whatever" emblazoned on it? A 6 month supply of Clearasil? An ASBO?

Would it be legal to make a game called Halo that could be, for example, a platformer with an Angel as the main character?

Yes.

You can always try at least... but don't make your main character green and call him Master Chef -- sorry, Chief. :)

May i ask what it means (maybe i'm getting old)?

When i first started using it i thought it stood for:
P = Power
Owned = Ownage

Therefore, Power Ownage or Power owned
Thats what i thought.. wow that sounds lame now.
i may be wrong

Pwned will never die!
