2) Kung Fu Master
100% an absolute classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Golden Axe and Double Dragon II were probably the last side-scrolling beat-em-up's I played. :-?
(Still remember the latter one completely freezing up on me on the very, very end of the game, after beating the end boss. Never saw the ending sequence or creditds.)
Bob 'n Rumble, a.k.a. Street Hassle on C64. My favorite :)
now give me the links to all of these games playable online!!!
I love these sort of game. As well as the obvious ones mentioned above I need to mention Viewtiful Joe, it was EXCELLENT and very well done. Similar to most scrolling beat 'em ups but also very different with the whole special powers thing.
+ VENDETTA (arcade)
Most of the above but would like to add:
Splatterhouse (10/10 for comedy violence value!!)
Shadow warriors
Shinobi (and the likes of)
Two crude dudes.
Aliens was good too
PS: I thought Double Drag. II was an awful game
yeah how could we forget Shinobi! But it's not really a beat 'em up...it's a platform game (so are a few others mentioned in this thread like shadow of the beast)
Well... They were scrolly and things were beaten up (shinobi could use his feet couldnt he :? )....
Hmm :/
You have pointed out a bit of a "grey area" there grey :)
I was about to suggest saboteur too, but it didnt scroll. Good game tho.
Shinobi was one of my favourites in the arcades.
I don't think Saboteur counts as it wasn't a side scroller and was more adventure game than beat-em up, although was a jolly spiffing game.
Was never a massive fan of the genre, really. The most fun I had was playing Double Dragon in the arcades - 2 player, coz you can beat each other up.
Golden Axe
Double Dragon
Target Renegade (but only on the Spectrum)
Not too fussed about any others. Golden Axe remains one of my favourite games though.
Hi Hotshot, you have very good tastes in scrolling beat-em-ups :) That list is a pretty good one, apart from P.O.W, that's almost insulting to ever put it that high (or even in the list) :)
I own the arcades of The Punisher, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Knights of the Round, Double Dragon and Golden Axe. Happy days! Especially in the days when MAME didn't exist and it was the only way to play them. And the 3 player arcade version I have of Battletoads, much better than any of the consoles (for one thing, no stupid bike jumping levels!)
Streets of Rage II, almost the best game soundtrack ever made. VERY happy days.
Hi Enay,
If I understand, you will never finish or release a demo of YOUR beat-them-all ?
:((((
I have finished The Punisher, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,Final Fight,Street of Rage 2 and Captain Commando.
I do really love the The Punisher, great story and great blast gameplay. Teenage Mutant Ninja is brilliant when you have your 3 mates playing and blasting to the end :)
I think P.O.W should be at last and replace knights of round to 6th
I think someone forgot River City Ransom!
Although Bruce Lee is an excellent beat'em up, it does not scroll...
Good point, it's really a platformer as well because you have to collect lanterns.
Bruce Lee was just a less insane version of Jet Set Willy.
Cadillacs and Dinasours is a good one too..
Does Green Beret count? It's more of a side scrolling stab 'em up though...
Weak.......this is THE List here :
1. Bad Dudes
2. Kung-Fu
3. Final Fight
4. Double Dragon
5. TMNT Arcade Game
6. The Simpsons Arcade Game
7. Alterd Beast
8. Streets Of Rage 3
9. P.O.W (Arcade)
10. Jackie Chan Action Kung-fu (TG16)
If you complete the Punisher arcade without losing a credit you get a hidden ending, something which came as a surprise and sense of achievement, one guy walks on with a dog kennel above his head, very funny.
The first scrolling beat-em-ups were only straight line ones like Kung Fu Master and Vigilante but I'd consider eight way ones like Double Dragon and Final Fight to be the true scrolling beat-em-up.
Scrolling beat-em-ups are a dead genre these days which is a shame since in the early 90s there were so many being made, then it was only 1 on 1 fighters and even those are a dying breed, only Tekken and Dead or Alive mostly being made.
Now all we get these days is yet ANOTHER world war FPS or shitty MMPROGS.

Doesn't seem likely for the time being I will finish it, has been 5 years since I worked on it, hard to believe, plus my digital camera is now broken!
But just for you Reno, I uploaded this:-

Uhm, Jet Set Willy is a completely different type of game than Bruce Lee.
Not really. Actually, it's more similar to Manic Miner.
