I was cropping some photographs, and it occurred to me that they might look better if instead of using the 7x5 standard of a regular photograph, I used something a bit wider, so I tried an 8x5 ratio instead. And it looked better. Then for some reason the thought occurred to me to use the golden rectangle to determine the size. So I looked that up, and found this:



But looking at it, I was like "Hey wait... That's the same ratio as my image here that I've cropped already. And isn't 800x500 the native resolution I used in my space beetles game? So doesn't that mean..."

So I scaled the image up to 1920 pixels wide, and lo and behold it was the same size as my screen.

So the 16:10 displays now in use on PC's follow the golden rectangle, or pretty damn close to it. :-)

The Goldene Schnitt is a classic and great but aren't most displays produced in a 16:9 instead of a 16:10 format?!

Nope. Widescreen PC displays are 16:10, while HDTV is 16:9.

Here they call PC displays 8:5 but I don't like calling it that. :-)

There are even a fair few 16:10 televisions now too. 16:10 looks like it's going to be the normal aspect ratio at some point, it's just a matter of time.

There are both formats available for displays (also computers), i mainly had to deal with 16:9 so far.

Maybe I'm missing something but, so what?

The main HDTV resolutions are 16:9 resolutions. Why would anyone make a TV which is 16:10, when every movie and TV show you display on it would have to have black bars of some sort?

The golden ratio/rectangle is used by artists the world over. Even the ancient romans used it in the construction of their buildings. It's a shape found in nature, and as such is pleasing to the eye.

So someone knew what they were doing when they made PC displays 16:10 when HDTV's were being made to be 16:9. I just thought that was interesting. I didn't understand before why they might have made the two use diffeent standards, other than 16:9 being awfully wide for something you're gonna be doing word processing on.

(TV's were made 16:9 because that is a common movie aspect ratio, and it was probably chosen over 16:10 originally for some obscure reason having to do with film way back in the day.)

Lots of films I watch on my 16:9 TV have black bars at the top and bottom because they are 2.35:1

I said every movie, not some movies. :-)

Obviously you can't avoid having black bars sometimes, but it would be downright retarded to choose an aspect ratio where no movie or TV show will ever appear without black bars.

That's a 22" set. They only used 16:10 because they were too cheap to make a 22" panel specifically for small televisions, and that's a major computer monitor manufacturer.

No major retailer in the US carries something like that.

I just checked. Not Best Buy, not Circuit City, not even Walmart, king of cheap crap, sells 16:10 tv's even at that small size, from what I can tell. Maybe if you looked really hard you could find one model at those stores, but I doubt it. And even if you did... one TV out of 100 models is still effectively no TV's with that aspect ratio.

And that was probably for the same reason as that one LG TV you found. Back then there were no 16:10 monitors being made, but they were making 16:9 HDTV's, so whoever released those widescreen monitors first was probably a TV maker or two trying to branch out, like Westinghouse is doing now with their crapola monitors.

My point still stands that you're smoking something if you think 16:10 is even remotely in wide use for TV's or that it is going to replace 16:9 which is a movie standard and the HDTV standard. There is no movement that I know of towards a 16:10 HDTV resolution, nor a movement to make any movies or TV shows in that aspect ratio. One 16:10 TV in a tiny size made by a PC monitor maker doesn't refute this in any way.
