Top idea - don't know why nobody's invented it before.

It's pretty cool, I read about this last year - it has been thought of before but apparently the servo technology was holding it back.

What a complete waste of time!
I have an electronic tuner (as do most guitarists), which cost about £10 and you just get a needle telling you to tighten or loosen the string, it still automatically works out what string it is.
And at that price it's only going to be bought by seasoned guitarists who know when their guitar is in or out of tune.
Still interesting gimmick, but nothing more than that.

Nah, if you can't tell that your guitar is out of tune you shouldn't be playing live! And if you're using strings that are so knackered that you get out of tune mid gig you need to start spending money on fresh strings!And at that price it's only going to be bought by seasoned guitarists who know when their guitar is in or out of tune.

The fact that it can automatically retune to different tunings (open E, drop D etc.) in an instant makes it very versatile to use live.

Maybe, but as I said, it'll knacker your strings if you keep retuning so you'd be better off with multiple guitars, plus the harmonics will be set up correctly on each guitar. Anyway... Nice toy... Can't see it selling though! I can see your point, I gig pretty often and change strings every 2 gigs or so - knackered or not.

Usefulness aside, it would be interesting to see how much weight it puts at the head. I can't imagine would be that much but if you're guitar isn't well balanced it's a pain to play.
Good point, but I'd expect Gibson to have addressed this.
Plus, Les Pauls tend to weigh a ton anyway..

it would hate me
i detuned the e string (or whatever the thickest one is called) on my bass whilst killing it with a knife file doing a demo sound for a mate it went so loose im surprised it didnt just fall off ... or let me put an arrow along it ;)

tuner "but ive just retuned you a second ago"
bass "i know but he keeps on hitting me"

bass "i think i just landed and a dials fallen off"

Wouldn't mind something like that for my acoustic, as I'm slow as hell when it comes to tuning properly.
(probably my eletric tuner's fault as well for requiring me to pick a string 5-6 times for it to get a proper reading)

I think this one will go the same way as fret leds to show you the scales/chords. i hate les pauls too.

The worst guitar based invention i've seen is an attachment you hold onto the guitar allowing you to play chords. It basically holds down a bar chord shape. There was some dumb guy on QVC who couldn't play guitar, happily strumming away. Makes you shake your head a bit. Everything nowadays is geared towards making people dumber.
You mean a capo? I've never used one because I play metal so learning bar chords was pretty essential, but yeah I've seen a lot of people use them to change the key they are playing in. If you do a bar chord you are missing one finger so only have 3 more to construct the chord, yet if you use a capo, in theory you could use 4 fingers to make the chord.
For some people the guitar is just a backing to their vocals anyway, so they learn some basic chords and strum away. I got into guitar for a different reason - because I liked the amazing stuff that could be done by a really skilled person.

No, not a capo. Something similar, but it's handheld. It holds down the entire shape of a major bar chord

I've been playing far longer and can't play anything nearly as good as that - but then I'm welsh, so thats my excuse.

Incidentally, just the other day I brought out my old guitar and played some riffs. The gf had listened to that brilliant Pachelbel clip and asked if I could play that song for her. There was only one thing I could respond to that:
"Sweet mercy, I played in a punk band! I couldn't even play decently back then!" :)
Oh, and I'd actually like that self-tuning guitar. But - as was mentioned above - the amateurs won't be willing to dish out the dough, and the ones who'll spend the cash won't need it.
