the url says it all..

About time Sony made it easier for developers to develop for their console although it may well be "too little too late", Microsoft has been "developer friendly" for years. Maybe Sony has worked out that without good games their console will die.

Ouch. I don't think I'd like this if I was a developer of one of the mid-range 3D engines. The cheap ones like Blitz and DB will be ok, because of the complexity difference, and the expensive engines like Renderware will be ok because lots of studios are already tied into them with tools, source code and trained developers. Not sure if I'd want to be one of the guys working on an engine in the $1,000 - $10,000 range though.

Cool! I always said, the PS3 will come slowly but it will come.

Yeah, it's a real win for Sony, but it's also a big win for the kids we all used to be when we started fooling around with programming on Spectrums and Commodores. This sort of thing should make developing for PS3 (and XBox360? It's not clear yet) as accessible as programming for Speccies and Commodores was for us.

While they're at it, they could also completely open the PS3 hardware to Yellow Dog Linux and make the machine a serious Linux box...
