How to go back to XP?

Having used Vista for a good year and a bit and having had alot of problems with it I've decided to go back to XP.

Here's the problem though. When I format the HD and install XP it refuses to function. It loads in to the desktop but then just hangs and I have to reboot.

My question is does Vista do anything to a hd that can cause it not to be able to go back to XP?

Was it low-level formatted?

When I first installed Vista all I did was use it's built in tool on the installation screen to quick format the partition.

You should have no problems as long as..
1 You have a OEM/Retail Windows XP disk
2 You reformat the hard drive

Vista uses a different NTFS version than XP. I usually delete the entire partition and do NOT quick format.
