Amiga was way ahead of anything else you could get your mits on at the time. I remember that tv programme vividly. When fred started playing the sounds (strings / guitar) my first question was, "How much is Grandma worth again?"

Had the get the A500 when that came on the scene.
Complete with Aegis Sonix and Deluxe Paint. Magic times!

I've got an A1200 plus HDD plus 8MB expansion plus a bunch of old games (and original Blitz Basic) that I am looking to sell. Was going to put it up on ebay...in the next month, not really looked into what they're going for now.

I never owned an Amiga. I skipped straight from owning a Spectrum 128 +2 to owning a mighty 12Mhz IBM PC.

BBC Micro Live *sigh* loved that as a kid.

The 1985 Amiga OS 1.3 has features which even Vista and Linux doesn't have yet today: Empty/Full bar on left side of window, Screens (kinda like Desktops on Linux compiz-beryl UI) but more advanced, as they can be assigned an own CPU load and screen resolution, and their creation is application controlled, not just a stupid desktop expansion, and thin line window borders when no scrollbars are needed. Just to mention a few... in real there are like 1000 features which nobody has been able to replicate yet. And that's only OS 1.3, in OS 3.1 there's again much more features, not to speak of OS 4.0 which was just recently launched (or should have been).

I used to love deluxe paint. Doesn't feel like there's anything like it on the PC though, not for animation anyway. People feel free here to trample me with good pc bitmap animation packages. And does anyone remeber octamed?

That windows add clearly shows that Windows (or DOS or PC) was never meant to be a technologically up-to-date or even advanced system. It's only purpose was to make money. Bill Gates had no clue about computers himself either, he just hired a few guys to make his first PC in a garage, it was even then all just about money. Money for Microsoft, not for the customers or anyone else.

So where can I buy this new dream machine? They were definitely more interesting days. I could see totally believable virtual reality now, and I wouldn't be blown away like I was when I saw the miggy.

I remember seeing a few amigas on 'top of the pops' too.

That was a very cool feature, being able to switch resolutions mid-screen -- it allowed you to have a game at standard 32-color low-res, but have a status bar at 16 color hi-res right smack in the middle of it, for example.

The Amiga ruled! I stayed away from PCs for as long as I could: A500, A500+, A1200 and finally the Amiga 4000.

Me too. Although looking at that video of Workbench, I have to ask myself why.

But seriously though... In my eyes, the Amiga was the dogs anatomy of it's time, and I have owned quite a few of them over the years...

One only wishes that the Amiga will make a big commercial comeback. Phwoar... Just imagine a Miggy, with a custom chipset like the original, but with the power of the latest technology. It's an indie developers, ultimate dream :).

I would still use the Amiga if it was still used by people, unfortunately everything is PC or consoles now.

I still remember the slanging-off wars between Amiga and Atari-ST owners, when I used to attend a school in Brighton. As far as I remember, most of the people that I know in Brighton, owned an Amiga. And the peeps that owned both the Amiga and the Atari-ST, said that the Miggy was better than the Atari-ST.

Don't think I would. The prospect of going back to Workbench/AMOSPro makes me feel physically sick.

Everyone in my college was saying Amiga rules, even ST owners admitted it. I remember showing someone from college a "Jungle Command" demo disk (music) which had a soundtracked version of Axel-F ... he was so amazed that he gave me a blank tape to record it for him.

We also had an open day at college where each department had to show prospective future students what they offered ... since we were computer studies students, it was natural for us to bring in our Amigas to demonstrate the advantages of doing a computer studies course.

My group demonstrated digitizing using Amigas hooked on to a video camera grabbing images using Newtek's Video toaster. Digitizing for home use was an amazing thing for that time (1990) and people were pretty impressed. Digitizing would take like 3 minutes ... Newtek's software would capture RGB images then combime them to make the image. We also demonstrated editing the digitized image using DPaint.

Another group was demonstrating Soundtracker on Amiga and using MIDI interface with a Yahama keyboard. Everyone on my course had Amigas. Even my degree coursework was done on an Amiga using FinalWriter and Wordworth.

One thing that was annoying for me is the fact that, I never knew that BlitzBASIC existed until about 1999/2000 I think it was. I had to make do with the DevPac Assembler.

My first experience was with the PC version of BlitzBASIC, a freebee with the PC Plus Mag.

I still have my 1200 in the loft, with 8MB expansion, external cdrom drive. It's gotta be maybe 2 years since I last ran trons through it......

I thought Argasm was the best ... it was the fastest assembler for the Amiga if I remember correctly. I did dabble with K-Seka for a bit.
